Title: Wormy Osage Bow Done
Post by: okie64 on March 03, 2011, 01:00:00 PM
I finished this one up a few days ago. Its the third bow from this same tree. It is 70"ttt and pulls 50# at 28". I had to chase rings pretty deep on this one to get below the wormholes, the holes are only in the handle area now. I like the looks of the hill style risers so I tried to shape this one as best I could to that style. Thanks for looking.
The stump at the bottom is where it came from. (http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee503/Jamey_Burkhart/008-3.jpg) (http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee503/Jamey_Burkhart/009-1.jpg)

All three bows from this tree.

Looks like a fine job you did. Sometimes you gotta work around difficulties to make good use of what Mother Nature provides us with.

After making my first longbow a full 68" tip to tip some time back, I started making them shorter. I just have a hard time manuevering such a "Long" longbow around and was constantly hitting my tips on everything.
Now I stick with 66" max overall length, and have even made some in the long 50's that I was still able to get a full 28" draw out of. One design I made recently is a bend in the handle flat bow that's 40# @28" and it's only 57" tip to tip.
It's one of the most fun shooting bows I have now.

Keep up the good work, your doing great!

I'm facing the same with some insect damage to my first attempts.

How long did this wood season?

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I thought the picture at the stump might be kinda cool.  :biglaugh:

Semo, I know what you're talkin about with the longer bows being hard to maneuver but I do about 95% of my hunting from a treestand and with a little prep and limb trimming I dont usually have any problems with the longer bows. I really just like the way they draw and shoot.

Highpoint, This wood laid on the ground where it was cut for about a year before I went back and got it(I didnt know any better). After that I took it home and split it and let it set in my shop for around a year or so. So its been cut for a couple of years.

Greg, these woods are only about 1/2 mile from my house and they are full of bow wood. Lots of osage, elm, oaks, and hickory. I dont cut the oaks because this is my deer huntin spot too. Oh yeah, and the mulberry I sent you was about 50 yards to the left of that stump.

All three bows look cool.  I espececially like the wormholes on the one handle.  I'd tell everyone who asks it's braille for "awesome looking bow", because that's what it is.  Nice job.  The picture with the stump is very cool.
