Title: Knife makers
Post by: fish n chicks on March 02, 2011, 12:02:00 PM
I'm not sure if this will get removed, but I figured since it's traditional, and home made related, i'd ask...

I'm getting into making my own knives, like the ones you see sold on our classifieds here, and I have one question (for now!    :biglaugh:  ),

Does the material you use for a handle get adhered to the knife as well as pinned or screwed, or just pinned or screwed? If it IS recommended that I adhere the material as well, what should I use? An epoxy or something?

Thanks for any help gang, and sorry if it's in the wrong place Mods. Regular ol' me can't post anything in the sponsor's classifieds.

There is also knife forum on Tradgang with some good knifemakers, you should probably ask there.

Check out the knife forum, great group of guys, as always on this site. They will help you out.
To answer your question, yes the handle gets epoxied as well as pinned. If you drill a couple of large hole in the tang and rough up the handle material you will get better adhession.

I use smooth on to attach the knife scales to the tang.  Then pin it (again using some more smooth on) and grind & sand to completion.
