Title: Most Popular Longbow
Post by: Savage on February 18, 2011, 01:23:00 PM
Iknow I said I wouldn't do it and now I'm kicking myself for building a small bow oven but I have someone that wants me to build them a longbow. Since I don't want to have to build several different types of bow forms my question is this. What is the most popular style of longbow? What I mean is straight limb, reflex, deflex and handle type straight or pistol grip style. I appreciate any help.

Definitly in my opinion a reflex deflex model.  You can get the speed in and the shock out.

I like a longbow with mild R/D. You see the R/D when unstrung but it shows none when braced. I think they are quieter with the added quality of increased cast.

I believe Apex Predator has said several times that he sells more straight limbs models by far than the others...  Hill style bows really seem to be quite popular.  Now if your question was which limb style shoots & feels the best, I would agree that a mild R/D is the popular answer.

Another vote for the d/r bows.  High on my wish list are designs like Big Jim's, LaClair's Shrew line, Dwyer Endeavor, etc.

If I had the money right now it would be one of Big Jim's Thunderchild R/D longbows. I've hear nothing but good things about them. Also there are rarely any used ones for sale unless it's a guy whos buying another one, then they are very reluctant to turn loose of the old one. That tells me something.
Also what Bona said, showe reflex deflex when unstrung but the limbs lay flat against the string when strung.
