Title: Try Try again Another Ash backed Ash bow
Post by: Toymaker on February 12, 2011, 07:27:00 PM
I glued up another try last night. I used 10 more clamps than I did the last try. I am using the same Ash back over ash belly. I have changed the limb shape this go around. 1 3/4" straight limbs out to a foot from the tips then an even taper to  1/2" the last foot. the bow is 61" NTN. I'm shooting for 30lb at 26" draw. I've cut the profile and the width on the band saw. I've got  the long string on it and I'm about ready to brace it.
Last bow blew up right after I braced it and started exercising it. I'm a little nervous

Any Suggestions on Tillering at this point? Top limb Right.

I scraped 20 times per limb from midpoint to tips. It looks better to me. I exercised it 50 times then I put the short string on and  I exercised it another 50 times. I think the bottom (left) limb is strong mid limb to tip.
What do you think?

Left limb looks real good to me.  Right limb looks stiff in the middle third & almost in danger of hinge-ing at the fade.  What weight & draw length are you at?

Use a gizmo and you wont have any guessing to do. Those things are the best tool in the shop. I agree, the bottom limb needs more movement. Run a gizmo over both limbs and it will tell you both need to bend more, your darn close though! Go slow or you will go under your target weight.

Well I've hit target weight. I think the tiller has gotten a little better. The gizmo is a big help! I've added walnut tips and overlay.
Here's some pictures. Seeing my son hold the bow, and a comment from someone else, I think the brace height is a little high. So I need to make another string.

Tiller looks real good.  Nice work!  I can't tune a bow to save my life so I won't comment on brace height...

Well it's done!! It looks done anyway! It needs a couple more coats of finish. It shoots very nice! I've shot about 50 arrows through it. The limbs seem to actually be evening out a little bit more.  I'll shoot some more tomorrow and see how it does.
