Hard maple is supposed to work good for backing lighter woods like cherry, walnut, etc. Never tried it though, I've always used hickory.

Savage. It's a walnut board that looks good but I am going to strip it in to 1" by 3" boards then back it with maple

I built my wife a walnut bow backed with hickory. The limb design was too narrow for the walnut I used and it developed frets and a lot of set. I think if you use 1 1/4-1 1/5 wide limbs and tiller the bow correctly it will work fine.
