Im interested in seeing everyones shop. I am trying to get mine set up and tailored for bow building and am looking for ideas. Here's mine.
I dont have any pic's, but I will trade you straight up if interested?
Leme think about it. Hahaha. I would like to see pics, I need to get some ideas, maybe grouping of certain tools, different tools, jigs, anything that might speed up build time or make it easier to get it done.
My rasps are in one pile, and my sandpaper/scrapers are in another. Thats about it for my shop. My power tools/dust makers are in the garage while my shop is in the basement. I dont build glass bows though, that changes everything.
Mine is in my basement. Much smaller, roughly 16' x 12'. I just put up two walls, tired of dust throughout basement. Once I get the walls and electric finished, I need to set up a dust collection system. Will get pics on here later. At work right now.
Thanks Blue!
question...................
How do you guys get any work done in a shop that clean. Seriously?
Here's how I do it..................
My shop has an overhead door and when I get ready to tiddy up I raise the door and get my gas-powered leaf blower. Works great........
Another tip............
Always have two of every tool, so when you can't find one that is under something else you will have a spare, save lots of time......
James.......................
I've worked in a small cabinet shop that was hardly that well equipted!
Well, it's not always that clean. I try to clean it after each job but sometimes it doesn't work out like that. I do know what you mean about the 2 tools though, it seems I spend alot of time trying to find stuff when I get going.
Here's my modest "shop"...half the garage...and spilling over into her half at times! Hope to build onto the pump house and move everything out there.
I would've rather had mine in the garage. But the wife needed a place to park her car. Can't beat the concrete floor and being able to just take a few steps and your in the house. I would try to convince her to move her stuff out there. hahaha. Good luck with that one. How do those Jet tools work? I have heard alot of good things about them.

Here's a thread from last year.
Your shop looks great. I would recommend using 4" flex hose from the gates to the machine. Using 2" hose will turn a 650 cfm dust collector into a 300 cfm really quick. I use two 4" hoses with the bandsaw and it isn't enough.

This is the shop "at rest". Every item is on wheels, even the workbench. Whatever is being used is wheeled out to the center of the room, or, in good weather, the driveway. After each operation, that tool is put away and at least minor cleanup is done. Only way to survive in this small a space.
Here is a link to a tool by tool tour showing how they're all fitted in there...

Nice shop! I really like the long workbench. I need to do something like that. I've been having to put a piece of plywood on top of my table saw. You have alot of space between equipment too. All of mine is pretty much on top of each other. I have been working on rearranging to make some more space the last few days and have made a little. Now I'm getting some ideas. Thanks for sharing!
my shop is just a corner of the in-laws garage. before that it was the kitchen table.
thee wife says i dont have to worry , that the house we get this spring will have a garage and a basement. she likes me being able to fix cars and make money , and she said she will NOT have a mess all over the house...
i still dont know how she expects me to get cars down to the basement...
-hov
Thanks Dick, I like the idea of tools on wheels, I will have to do some of that as well.
Hova, that was a requirement when we got our house a few years ago, had to have a 2 car garage and a large lot so I could build something. Those were my only requirements, she had a whole list of them. hahaha
this is my garage. it used to have a free standing work bench. i thought my garage deserved something better so i built my own overhead cabinets and work bench. its still a work in progress due to me building bows too. here are some pics. (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics029.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics028-1.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics027.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics030.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics028.jpg). i use my shop a lot. the #1 rule in my shop is mess= progress. ruddy
My shop is a poor mans bow shop. It is a 8x24 room off of the garage. It isn't much, but I insulated it so I can heat it during winter. Most of my tools were craigslist specials.
Messy workbench.

Here is a buddy of mine working on his first bow.

I hope my wife doesnt see the pics of how clean yalls shops are. Shes always hounding me about cleanin mine up, and I always say, "You cant build bows and keep the shop clean." Guess you guys are provin me wrong here.
Camoman, great looking shop Dude, and thanks for your service. Roy
(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f165/ROY-CHRIS/bowshop.jpg)
I used to have a great shop and I built a lot of furniture as a hobby. I had the house built when I took a job transfer. It had a three stall garage with a prestressed floor and a full basement to it that was my shop. I'm sad to say I have no pictures of it. I didn't build bows then. I sold that when I got divorced. I bought my current place which was a long time dream, a small acreage in the country.
It's a beautiful location with a bunch of shabby buildings. I have no garage, a 100+ year old barn that needs a lot of work, an old three sided pole building that housed hay and cattle before I got here and a dilapidated granary that I have yet to tear down.
Most of my power tools have been stored in the barn collecting rust and dust. I have access to my table saw in the pole barn and a band saw and little belt/disk sander in the barn. I've built one bow and working on two more.
After braving the cold at the band saw I brought the roughed out board bow into the finished basement and work over a sheet of canvas covering the carpet. It's far from ideal but it is great sawdust therapy.
Sorry for the rambling but it still helps to vent about the old shop. haha
You guys are completely immoral with how clean some of your shops are. What happened to looking out for your brothers. Not all of us are that clean and you make us look real bad.

No, that is a roadkill from KY. It is a massive deer with 6" bases. It gross scored 165 and netted 157. I am doing a Euro mount on it for the guy. I have done enough mounts this year to almost pay my way to the Tenn. Classic.
hova,she's a tasty one !
Got her a month and a half ago, not much left ;)
you know i thought i would be good with small game , but i think my new summer goal is some grain-matched surewoods with heat seeking heads on em. and getting all three in a furring strip.
was she a trad kill?

Broketooth - Awesome cabinets, I am definately lacking in that category. Did you build those yourself? The pegboard is a good idea too.
With all of the lumber I see in your shops looks like you guys have been doing some serious work!
Razorback - Looks like you've got some good help there. I may have to show your picture to my girl so I can get her out there to give me a hand.
I lucked into the shop I have. I built it as storage and an eventual woodshop for when I retired, but due to being burgalarized I was able to invest the insurance money into a shop now. Looks a little overkill for building bows. I could've saved alot of money by buying benchtop tools and spent the rest on bow material. Wish I would've known that then.
You guys have some great shops and I appreciate you sharing the pics. I'm getting alot of good ideas. Keep em coming.
Hova I think yours is the first shop I've seen with a tv in it. You must spend way too much time out there. Hahaha
I hope Dick visits this page again..soon :)
I also have a small shop and I'm in the middle of creating it. I like how all your stuff is on casters. I am wondering how you get the tool your working with to hold still. Have you got locking casters or have you got a more creative way to hold the tools still?
My table saw has a lift on it. I think they are pretty much universal fit and you can put them on other tools. You just step on it to lift it up and roll it around then you step on it again to drop it where you want it.
@ hova, she was a gift from a friend :bigsmyl:

Nice shops everybody, but some of them are way too clean.

WOW! Thats pretty cool Walt. Looks really cold out there though.
WALT WINS!
Very nice Walt.

Sadie, that's a nice work area. Looks like you are set for good staves too! Very nice.
Walt wins.
Camoman must have been floored with mine and a 4 post.
I was, nice set up. Walt I don't think I would get any work done with a backyard like that. I would spend all of my time just staring. hahaha
Sadie I feel cheated I only seen 3 knives in those pics.
sorry kellyg

Okay, you guys do keep your shops way to clean. I haven't called my garage a garage in about two years. It's now the bow shop! (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0093-1.jpg)This is abut as clean as it gets. It works though. The tillering tree is off to the right. Hot box glowing in the back. No power tools needed. No power tools used. I guess I got burnt out on power tools being a carpenter. Wait, I forgot... I do use a heatgun :knothead:

just kidding , that looks like a nice setup.
Yep, I love Walt's outside shop too. Go air circulation, proper lighting, don't have to worry about cleaning up, and the view is pretty darned spectacular!
Sadie, looks like you have some serious "old School" bow building going on in your shop.
Sadiejane, where did you get that woodenhandled spokeshave- i have one like that, that i inherited from my grandfather, in south africa, and he had got it from his dad!!
in all my years scouring second hand and pawn shops, i have never seen another.

Nice! I am jealouse of the guys that can keep an organized shop. I am fortunate to have a fairly large shop. Nice for room to move around, but a booger to Cool during our 11 1/4 month long summer.
I will tell you though, build it as big is you can afford. It will soon be too small!
I am constantly looking for more machinery for my full shop.

Nice shops everyone! Good to see that there are people like myself out there that believe in "spring cleaning" also. Which means that I don't clean my area until something springs itself out of my view so that I have to clean a bunch of stuff up to find it. It is always under the last thing I check though, still can't figure that one out, lol!

BigJim I would definately have to agree with you on the never have enough room thing. It doesn't take long to fill a space once you get started.
Kirkll, That's an awesome drill press. I especially like the adjustable table. Do you have a building with several rooms or is it just a huge room? Lots of lumber too, I'm jealous.
Sorry for the confusion, my user name changed. I dont use camoman anymore.
Great looking shops. All the pics have given me several ideas. Thanks guys!
Kirkll, Do I count three bandsaws? Part of me wants to say you're a cabinet maker, or at least own one's shop. Though I don't see a table saw..
Nice shops all around!

Good News!!! Thanks to this thread, I have talked the wife into letting me build a proper bowshop somewhere around 25'x25' with a wood stove for heat.
Bad News... I have to wait until the kids move out. Maybe in 10 years or so.
Whip, Awesome set up you have there! I like the metal dust collector piping and air filtration unit, I definately need to invest in one of those. Is your dust collector the canister type?
Savage, my dust collector is a 2hp Grizzly cyclone unit. It does a really nice job. The metal duct work is sure nice, but is plenty expensive. I think I had almost as much stuck into the duct work as I did in the collector!
All this talk about shops got me thinking...my wife says that usually means trouble. I am looking into expanding my pumphouse/storage shed into a shop. Seems my wife likes the idea of getting all my woodworking stuff out of the garage...yeah! So, is there a layout of a shop that I could look at to help in planning this? The building is 15ft.X 18ft. But I'm thinking of knocking out a wall and expanding it.
Whip, those cyclone units are awesome, I thought about building one. Thats another projects. I would like to eventually upgrade to the metal piping, just not in the budget right now.
Snag, I designed/buit my own shop, Im sure you could do the same. I would definately expand as much as possible. You never have enough space.
I have some ideas already Savage. Just thought some guys who have done this might have other ideas that I haven't thought of.
Nice set up Whip. I like the looks of the router/outfeed table and whatever else you use it for. It looks like there is a track there but do you have a fence you use with it too? I wish I had my shop again. I'm almost ready to retire and I really need a shop.
I installed the track for the router table when I built it, but haven't gotten around to making the fence for it yet. So many projects, and so little time! But that is one thing high on my list...
I retired 2 1/2 years ago, and had been planning it ahead of time. I knew once the income was gone the chances of getting a nice shop would go down dramatically, so I got myself all set up while I still had a real job. The only thing I wish I had done is to make it bigger!
I know exactly what you're talking about Whip. That's been my plan. Get the shop set up now before I retire. I have 11 years til military retirement so I'm hoping to get something going by then. If I can get it going soon enough maybe I can get a bigger place.
Snag, I built an 16x12 upstairs storage for mine to stock whatever I build. I enclosed one room for finishing. If possible I would try to locate my dust collector and compressor in an outside room to cut down on the noise. Believe it or not he dust collector puts out fine particles into the air that the bag doesnt catch. The canister types are best and if you can get a cyclone like whip that will make the motor last longer. Good luck!

I couldn't tell you about these mills bro. i'm just getting this one set up for woodworking. the only thing i cam say right now is it is a seriously powerful machine with excellent potential.
The giant cyclone i built myself and works excellent. the duct work is kind of patched together from an assortment of pipe i had stashed under the floor. :biglaugh:

a little dusty but what the heck? :D
I'm really jealous of all the cabinets and table space.
That, except for the top tool box which I built is a bunch of old kitchen cabinets and an old chest of drawers I rescued from the landfill. They sure come in handy.I still need more cabinet space so I have a semi make-over planned for spring, adding a dust colecter{badly needed} and if the budjet will allow maybe someA/C, my wife says I live out there anyway!

AKmud, how do you like that air filtration? I need to get one of those for sure.
Ricky, Ive been checking Craigslist for some used cabinets from a remodel or something, just keep missing out on them. I'll get lucky one of these times.
mater, I got my sanding drums set up that way from Jim Belcher when I bought out his Bow Hospital equipment. They really are one of the most used tools in my shop.
Take a look at Klingspor.com - they sell the complete drum assemblies. You will need to have a perfectly straight shaft and bearing set up to run it on.
QuoteOriginally posted by Savage:

It seems to work pretty well. Our basement is about 1400 sq.' and it keeps the air pretty clean. The heavier dust settles out before it can be filtered but the fines go away quickly. I need to get a dust collection system working but I keep putting it off thinking I will eventually build a shop... :)
Finally got pics of my shop. It is currently under construction. It was just in our full unfinished basement. I have put up two walls, and plan to install a dust collection system. Its small, 16 x 12, but It does all I need.
