Title: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Trux Turning on January 25, 2011, 11:41:00 AM
I got this one glued up this weekend and most of the bow snot cleaned off. I'm using tigerwood for the riser with a mosaic of maple and paduka between white glass- for the limbs-brown glass and bamboo core-this bow will be 46"ntn.
Here are some pictures of the start of the mosaic and riser.

All the stuff ready for glue up-

Here it is out of the oven - cleaned up some and with the center line established.

That style reminds me of a cape bufflo. That is going to be a nice looking bow when it is done.

Bet I can't resist checking back later!

It is a pretty interesting bow to build- getting it into the form is the first challenge but putting a string on it for the first time can be a little unnerving- you hope it doesn't try to turn around on you! I'll find out soon enough- they do shoot better than you would think for a snubnose.

I am looking forward to this one Trux...I have 2 46rs in progress right now...they are fun!

Let us know the lam stack and poundage once it is complete...I am still having some trouble finding the correct stack on mine.

Will do Brad- It will be interesting to see how this one comes out compared to the last one as I decreased the lam stack on it. Can't wait to get some more shop time and see how it likes a string.

Post by: Trux Turning on January 28, 2011, 07:19:00 PM
Had some time after work today- so far so good- it is braced really low at this point- around 6", once I get the overlays on I'll brace it at its 8.5 to 9" mark. Lucky for me also- the draw weight seems to be about right- not too light/heavy.

Trux looks great, great glue lines at the fades.  It amazes me that the fades close up so well the belly ramp looks so steep.  I predict the turkeys are not going to like this bow to well, but I also predict you will.
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Sixby on January 28, 2011, 11:48:00 PM
Stupid question but why do you want to go to such a high brace. I would think by looking at it that 7 1/2 or so would work and you would get a lot more speed. JMHO Such a neat little booger.

God Bless you , Steve
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Trux Turning on January 29, 2011, 08:58:00 AM
You are right Sixby- I'll start with the bow there and see what it likes. The first one I built shot best at 8+"s, right Jess? I picked that higher brace height based off of the original bows recommendation. I should get the rest of the overlays glued on today if all goes as planned.
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: tenbrook on January 29, 2011, 09:07:00 AM
Those shorter bows seem to like a lower brace height then we are used to with the longbows.
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: jess stuart on January 29, 2011, 10:10:00 AM
Trux you are correct mine does best at a hair over eight inches.  I know that the original my buddy owned back in the late sixties had a real high brace height, seems most bows back them had much higher brace heights than bow of today.  That may not be true in every case but I do think it holds true in the majority of the older bows.  Don't really know why, bet some of those older ones would probably shoot better at a lower brace height.

Got some work done on the snubnose this weekend. First came all the overlays and tip stuff. I put together a fancy form that uses the old rubberband method of clamping- worked out pretty well.
Then back to the nock groves- they still need alot of attention but they lined up well.

Here is the riser with the window cut out and some rough shaping done.

Looks Awesome David.  I with you on the 8+ brace i would rather sacrifice speed for quietness and forgiveness.  Thats going to be a bad little joker for pop up blinds.

Thanks again.

I wish I could get my risers to match up that nicely  :(  I tend to use a single piece of wood because I don't have the tools to get a perfect match between 2-3 flat surfaces. Grrr.... That centre line looks ridiculously good!

HAve you checked out Rodney Wright's site?  He has this same model on his line up, it's the Stalker.  I have one.  They're fun bows to shoot.  I've had mine for a few years now, it's marked 62#, but is only a little over 55#.  She really slings an arrow.   :archer2:
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Trux Turning on January 31, 2011, 06:47:00 PM
I did- that's where I got the picture of the riser that is in the first post (it gives me a reference to work from). The first one I built surprised me at how well it shot- it was 55#- this one should be a bit lower in weight. I'll get some sanding done on it this evening- getting close to testing some arrows out with it.

Very cool build and bow. I wonder if it would be possible to make one with a lower wrist grip given the cramped space you are working in. High wrist bows give me fits but I love the bow design!

Looking good Trux!
Man, I bet that would be an awesome blind bow especially for turkey thumpin'!!
I sure hope you are making this for the bow swap, and I sure hope it has my name and address all over it!!      :goldtooth:

BTW- Is that about the same length as the Kodiak or Kodiak magnum? I know they are super short, but never got a chance to shoot one. I love my Grizzly but always wished it was a tad bit shorter like the Kodiak.
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Trux Turning on February 02, 2011, 03:09:00 PM
Semo I don't know how long those kodiaks are- turkeys is what I'm thinking this one will be good for too it's 46"ntn.
Had the day off so I made some progress- Here it is all roughed out and in need of final sanding and then finish- I might try an epoxy finish this time...

I put it on the scale and it is going to finish right around 45#s-perfect. It has a very smooth draw and from the looks of the string angle it has a few more inches of draw lenght left in it too.

Georgeous bow Trux...Makes me want to walk to the garage right now.  The tips are great!

And my improvised 42" strings are made the exact same way for these bows as I build them.

That looks so radical, and the full draw pics really did it for me. I'd love to shoot one of those! First thing I would have to do is set my blind up out in the yard, unzip a window, and start flinging arrows at targets in all directions!      :notworthy:    :archer2:

Dave, If possible I like this one better even than the last one. You have better string angle . did you add a tip wedge? That thing has even more draw in it.

FYI this bow is 6 full inches shorter than a Kodiak Mag. They are 51 . They did make a few Kodiak Mags in a 48 in called a Super Mag.

Great bow and great job. God Bless yuu, Steve
Title: Re: Shortie "NO LONGER"under Construction
Post by: Trux Turning on February 05, 2011, 05:45:00 PM
Steve-no tip wedge unless you count the overlay on the belly as one. The only thing I can contribute to the string angle difference are the overlays I used-this one they are a little thicker than on the first.

I'm trying a different finish on this one. A massey finish followed by tru-oil. Here is a picture with the first coat of epoxy drying on the riser. I'm not quite sure how long to let it cure between sanding??? It looks like it will do a pretty good job sealing the grain- this tigerwood is really starting to come to life now.

I usually let the epoxy set overnight. you can check it until it doesn't feel sticky. I usually coat several times but you can oil after the first coat. the pores will be sealed with tiger.Thats sure pretty. One of my favorite woods.
