Title: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: camoman on January 12, 2011, 07:12:00 PM
Does anyone have pics of Binghams bows they have built?

Here is a Bingham's 64" r/d I built.

There are lots of bingham's bows on here if you search a little.

Good Luck

I redesigned the handle, but overall was a binghams design.. all the wood was mine, I just got thier blueprints..

  NO PICS OVER 640 PIXELS

Thanks!  That was the 2nd bow I ever built.
I still shoot it now and then for fun.. and still shoot good!

Nice bow, I'm guessing you can stray from the plans a little for the riser design.

Yep.. riser is personal choice.  The plans helped me keep the angles of the limb pads correct and overall spots for grip and shelf.. but afterwords. the sky is the limit.

Here is another couple of risers.. I keep playing with it..

Just a couple.. all based originally off of binghams with my own spin on them in search of that "one".. My problem is, I like them all..hehe

I hope I can turn out one as nice as these. How long do you figure it took you to make one?
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: Bradford on January 12, 2011, 11:00:00 PM
The first is the longest.. building the forms and getting used to everything..

Now, I can probably have one done in a full 10 hours..  That equates to about 1.5 weeks.. an hour here, an hour there.

That's awesome. How many have you built so far?

Post by: Bradford on January 12, 2011, 11:14:00 PM
I am remembering 15.  There might be a few more I have forgot...LOL.  Gave a lot away to friends.

Now that they are turning out awesome.. I give them to family..

Now I hope to start selling them.  I have a few people wanting some custom.

I really like the design of the last one. My kit should be here today or tomorrow. I plan on building the oven and form this weekend and I took a couple days off next week to try and make some progress on the build. Do you have any pics of the others you have built. I am trying to think of what I want to do with the riser. I have chosen Black Walnut and Zebrawood for the riser and Black Walnut and Clear glass for the limbs.

Here are a few more for you- there is a lot of room to modify the design of your riser with bingham kits. Two pronounced longbows and a couple of one piece recurves:

You guys do really good work.

Do you use Tung Oil to finish all of your bows? I read somewhere that superglue fills in little voids in the wood. Have you ever used that? And if so do you still use the Tung Oil over it?
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: Bradford on January 14, 2011, 12:05:00 PM
I just use tung oil or a wipe on poly from minwax.  Tung oil seems to soak in the wood better.

I have used super glue to fill just the gaps and yes, I tung oiled right over it with no problems.  I have never wiped the whole handle down with super glue like some of the others.

A good example of why I like tung oil... My dad's bow I just built, well last night I got a bug up my butt to add on an insert on the handle so you can add a stabilizer bar to it.  Well, doing so, I scratched up the handle a bit.. so I sanded down the bad areas and then re applied the tung oil.. can not tell where I did it!

Don't know if a spray on poly will let you do that.

Post by: camoman on January 14, 2011, 12:54:00 PM
Yeah I'm pretty sure poly you cant do that with. I just did a coffee table with poly a few weeks ago and when I made a mistake I had to strip the whole thing down again. Real pain in the butt. Have you done any inlays or overlays. I am hoping to do that eventually and don't have a clue how the inlays are done.
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: Bradford on January 14, 2011, 01:00:00 PM
I have not done inlays YET... but have some "how-to's" in my online favorites to do them.  I am also working on a guitar and want to do inlays on that.  Overlays are pretty easy.. that is what you are doing when you do your limb tips..
Here is a pic of an overlay I did at the base of a limb..

  NO PICS OVER 640

I cut a small piece of the dymond wood and shaped it.. then epoxied it to the bolt area of the limb.. lightly sanded down the edges and tung oiled the limb.  I like the way it came out.

Looks nice. I will have to try that on the one I'm building. Have you seen the limbs by blacktail that have what looks like 1/2 one wood 1/2 another? I wonder how they do that?
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: Bradford on January 14, 2011, 01:53:00 PM
Glue the wood lightly together with tight bond.. just a drop or two.. make your cut.. glue together.. then lam grind and put in the fiber glass.
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: camoman on January 14, 2011, 10:13:00 PM
Do you make your own lams?
Title: Re: Bingham Bow Pics
Post by: Bradford on January 14, 2011, 11:39:00 PM
Yep

I cut the wood 1/8" thick on the band saw, then use my home made lam grinder to get them where I need em.  Also can do tapers.

Check out my post on the christmas 5 bow build.. it's probably on page 2 or 3 by now.

Like stated earlier, as long as you keep the same limb bed angle, shelf spot, and overall length of the riser you can do what you want with the rest of the riser.

I WANT TO DO THIS SSSSSOOOOO BAD!!! Sorry I needed to vent. It's a slow process trying to find saws and sanders for the right price. As soon as I can find all the equipment I need I'm going to try out a Bingham kit. I can't wait, tell then I'll watch the bowyer's bench and just try and be a sponge.
