Title: Any issue cutting shelf into BBO longbow?
Post by: razorsharptokill on January 05, 2011, 06:36:00 PM
Have a BBO that I have out of the clamps, cleaned up, and the handle lams glued on.

I'd like this bow to have a shelf. Any issues with the bamboo splintering? I have a power lam between the boo and the taper lam of osage.

i use a rasp. making sure to draw or push the rasp from boo to osage. if you go in the direction of osage to boo. you will splinter the boo backing.

like i said. if you go from boo to osage you will be ok. no problem. i've done it and i'm sure others have also. other people will most likely post different methods for doing it. take your time. no need to rush.

Yep, what Don said.  As long as you go from boo to wood you'll be fine.  Lots and lots of people have built Bamboo backed bows with the majority having cut out shelves so it can be done  ;) .

Or...are you concerned with it lifting a splinter...after the shelf is cutout,  because you created a weak spot/violated the back kind of deal?  If that's the case, as long as you do it right, shouldn't be a problem.
