So it seems everyone likes a nice shinny bow that shows the wood. I understand but I am about to make a bow and would like a matt finish for hunting? So what is best to use to keep the bow dry and protected but not shinny. I have not even started building yet but I want to get this all figured out(or not in this case, pun) before I begin.
Thanks Brian
You can use truoil or tung oil and rub it with steel wool after it dries to get a matte finish. I've also used sprayon poly satin. I dont think it looks as good though.
I've used flat Thunderbird Epoxy and I like that the best for a dull, matte finish.
Hey vanillabear, that looks nice. Ive never tried using the poly and truoil on the same bow but I might try that next time.
Satin spray poly works for me. I do several coats within an hour's time when it is warmer. Don't try that when it's cold though :)
If you are after a looker, it helps to do a couple real nice brush coats of gloss to build up the finish.
If you want to use all poly. Like John said, several coats of gloss first then the satin. The main reason is the gloss is a harder more durable finish.
