Title: UBM Auction bow (with addon) DONE PICS pg 7
Post by: kennym on January 01, 2011, 05:58:00 PM
Thats United Bowhunters of Missouri.

I'm building this for the auction at the festival in Jeff City Feb 4-6th.

This will be a 64" d/r, around 50 to 55# @28"

I've wanted to build a mostly zebra bow for a while,so I gathered some stuff this eve to begin.

From left,
a 64" bow off this form
2 clear glass
a black glass I scuffed both sides for riser
zebra and curly maple for riser
2 victims for veneers,can't decide , HELP
amberboo for core
foreground- phenolic for tips
background- good ol EA-40

And the riser will look somewhat like this...

I may do something different on the grip caps tho........     :)

I love the color of the piece on the right but the left with the longer markings is holding its own. I think if you close your eyes and just grab one you could not go wrong.

Hova for my price you would just be better off paying Kennym to just build you one.   :biglaugh:

Note to self: Glue accent in while riser is in block form next time!!

The curly maple accent 1/8" thick..

And it is a riser blank!!

Now for the limb cores and veneers, I use a 1/4" thick taper sled to cut tapers, saves material and grinding compared to cutting parallel and grinding to a taper!

Here we want a .125" butt on the .002" per inch taper.

I make them .035 big ,that gives me room to grind to tolerance, note the preacher stick to set saw,(old carpenter slang, preacher don't lie)..

Then to cut the blanks..

Now on the .001 taper with builtin power lam and tip wedge, I measure in center, then add .018 to that to get butt thickness. In this case I'm wanting a .060 butt lam.

This makes the butt about .150,so I grind it parallel out to about 3" from the end of the fades, this way it doesen't affect the work of the power lam part and the tip wedge is not bothered either. This brings the butt end down so you can bend it up the riser ramps...

And what everyone wants to see,the actual lams that are gonna go into her...

Back later with more...........  :wavey:

Hey Kenny, I wish my Lab was as smart as yours. He has a rug just like that but will sit in whatever space has the most saw dust and dirt. Comes out looking like he got into a fight with a dust collector and lost!

But on the real, do you need an apprentice? I speak 14 languages, including Klingon, and have references from both living and dead presidents, and can also levitate. I understand this is for an intern position.

Ok, seriously serious now, I don't understand all your numbers. More specifically:

"a .125" butt on the .002" per inch taper."

Does this mean that your lam, at the riser, will be .125, then, as i'm looking at it from it's profile (edge grain) it will taper down .002" till the tips?

What's a "butt lam"?

You threw out a lot of numbers, and every time I heard butt my mind wandered and I started missing my wife, so I hope you don't find my questions ill timed. I've been reading all these lam threads with all these numbers and I haven't got a clue what they mean. Id love to start my first lam bow this spring if I gather enough knowledge. And sorry about the long post!

Maybe I shoulda said lam butt instead of butt lam!

The taper in ? is .125" at the butt(thick end) and tapers .002" per inch to the thin end. That is .072" over the 36" lam.

Hope I cleared that up for ya,I'm not much of a writer!

Title: Re: UBM Auction bow (with addon) DONE PICS pg 7
Post by: K30bowfisher on January 03, 2011, 09:42:00 PM
With that jig, do you even have to sand, or does your saw cut good enough to just glue it up?
Title: Re: UBM Auction bow (with addon) DONE PICS pg 7
Post by: kennym on January 03, 2011, 10:26:00 PM
Thanks guys!!

I lightly sand off the bandsaw marks and give it the light leakage test, then finetune from there...

Randy, maybe Charlie would bid on it for ya.....  ;)

OK, here we mark out the fade cuts..

Forgot to photo the fade grinding, I make mine 1/16" at one inch from end of fade, and a little over 1/8 (.140")at 2" from end.

Here we put the stop on the belly so the lams don't slide up over the corner. Makes a gap if they do,how do I know??  :p
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/719.jpg)

Here I skive the back lams to glue into 1 long one...

And the skive gluing setup, a 6' pc of 1/4" aluminum stock to keep em strait, plastic to keep the CA corralled, and clamp to bench with spring clamps...

If you CA both pcs. ,you have time to position and clamp before it sets...

Thats all for tonite!!

Post by: kennym on January 08, 2011, 10:15:00 PM
Allright!

Glued the skived pcs together to make 1 long one. Makes an invisible joint almost with a little care....

Ground the fades on the riser while the glue was warming in the hot box, only about 50 in the shop. Better than outside, sposed to hit 16 this afternoon.

You can see the marks where I checked thickness at 1 and 2 inches...

Here are the bow parts ready to assemble into a bow (hopefully)...

Smooth on is mixed and air bubbles surfacing,,osage tongue depressor anyone?...

Now the fun part, don't wear anything you don't want glue on. Lucky for you, most of my clothes are not to worry about, so that saved the naked pics!!

Sorry, once again,no pics at glueup. Don't want to glue my camera!

Here she is in the form, put a few #s of air in and adjust your lams and riser. Also some fender washers with a hole drilled off center to swing up to catch the lam stack mid limb and a set a couple inches from the ends of the fades works wonders to keep everything where it needs to be. Just don't tighten em with the cordless drill! This will bind up and make a spot on limb edge without glue.

Also I wipe the squeeze out glue down into the plastic, you can then break off 90 % of it when she comes off the form...

Maybe tomorrow we can see if she makes weight!!

  :wavey:
Title: Re: UBM Auction bow (with addon) DONE PICS pg 7
Post by: kennym on January 09, 2011, 10:22:00 PM
Well, where were we?

Oh yeah, put her to bed in the oven.
Here she is just out, first the glue you can break right off if you wipe it down away from the edges of the limb where it squeezes out..

After I clean one side up pretty well with the disc sander and 36 or 40 grit,I run it thru the thickness sander and finish cleanup...

Next I peel the tape and put new on, always have a little glue on the tape, and my straitedge won't lay true on it...

Then new tape and we lay out a bow,I used a laser a few times, but if the bow isn't perfectly level across the limbs, I convinced myself I might get a bad read. So I use the tried and true string(sometimes both string and then laser)

Just mark center at center of riser, then center at limb tips. Clamp the string on the limb tips, and see if it is on center at the riser...

Now check at center...

Now I make a square mark at 12" from center each way(3" past fades), this is where I start my width taper toward tips, get a center mark here also..

Title: Re: UBM Auction bow (with addon) DONE PICS pg 7
Post by: kennym on January 09, 2011, 10:43:00 PM
Now I check center mark at end of fades(3" past)to see if I have equal distance to limb edges. This one is good, but if one is smaller, mark all the limb edges here the same. ie; it should be 3/4" to each edge, if one measures11/16,make em all that and your bow will be a little narrow..

Now I mark 5/16 each side of the limb tip mark for a 5/8" tip at nocks, then connect the dots from fades to tips..

As a side note which I forgot to mention, if your tips and center don't line up when you string it, move the tips equal amounts the same direction to bring it to the center mark at riser...

There is a limb marked out,now off to the disc sander with the 36 or 40 grit for about 10 minutes,USE DUST COLLECTION!!

And we have the limbs ground out, I alternate ends and sides so she don't get too hot!!

Now fer some nocks,,I'm just gonna send it to Marty for this step!! LOL  :notworthy:

No, really here we go, The mark square across the limb,I made as soon as I got the new tape on, forgot to say tho. This is a 64" bow,so I measure 32" each way from center on the bow's back along the curves. Then square across the limb, you can use this line for the nocks when the time comes.

Here is a 45 degree starting line...

Mark both sides and carry the mark around the limb, it will show if you are good before you file. It should look like this..

NOT THIS !! (Dramatization, it really wsn't like this)

Not too bad!!

Then a little rounding here and there...

One side done for comparison..

And strung up,it pulls 54#@28" ,so it is gonna be a couple light....

We'll shape on the handle right after overlays!!

Are you just using regular old saran wrap? I tried squeezing the glue down like that before baking it on my last bow and kept poking holes in the saran wrap I borrowed out of the kitchen? I taped the holes back shut and happily, was able to avoid a collossal mess.

That is going to be a sharp looking bow.

K30, no Saran wrap is too clingy and soft. I use the cheep best choice stuff from wallyworld, easier to handle and a little thicker I think.

super nice one Kenny!  me and saran wrap don't get along either...will have to pick up the WallyWorld stuff soon, deer season ends Jan 23rd and bow building season starts the 24th.. K30 I have been using car wax (the stuff in the green can) on my metal pressure strip and form and if any smooth on gets past the saran wrap the wax helps to keep it from sticking. I bought some teflon spray that dried in a couple of minutes and I think it worked good but I went back to the wax

Robert ,good point on the wax, just another item I forgot to mention.

Someday I'll do a build without a deadline and photograph every move, heck maybe a video!

Reckon anybody would watch a 20 hour movie with me in it?    Probably have to get a lovely assistant to get any takers!!  :D

Allrighty then!

Put some overlays on tonite.
\\
Here we go, first I lay out where the ends are on the tape...

Then carefully cut the tape,do NOT get into the glass!

Peel tape where the overlays go..

Rough up,I like to use a sanding block to keep everything flat and smooth...

I gathered up all the necessary components and fitted the grip caps...

Here is where these near empty cans of EA-40 come in...

Glued and clamped, I put a pc of masking tape on the end that meets the spot where I cut the tape to keep it lined up endways. They try to slide towards center on me,we'll see if this holds em in place! Also taped the back overlay in place while I glued on the grip overlays...

Kenny,
From the scratch marks left buy the sand paper you went side to side. Is that just because of the tape or is there another reason.

No, as long as its roughed up so the glue adheres.

Wow very impressed. I asked on pow wow if i should buy a print from bingham to teach myself how to build a  bow and everyone pointed to you and i can see why very nice work.if you have any helpful words i greatly appreciate it thank you.

Thanks Jason,
The hardest part is just starting. From there, I see no end to this ailment of building bows!  :biglaugh:

Now to my madness!

On to the tips, rough the glass up here too, good adhesion..

Glue a pc of phenolic, this is 1/16" ,conforms to the limb without grinding the phenolic to fit. I used CA for the tips...

Next layer of the back overlay,a pc of black glass, used CA for this one also,I use smoothon where you blend into the limb glass. Seems to have a better looking joint...

Back to the tips, put on a pc of black phenolic...

Here is what we get on the tips, makes a cool lookin tip IMO,kinda like the old Bears. Did I mention that I bevel the first pc to make life easier when finishing to the limb glass?...

Last pc for the back overlays, .040 zebra just for color...

Here is a tip roughed in ,see where I touched the tape with the spindle sander? Careful now!!

Alright, enough overlayin, lets make this thing shootable!!Almost a major malfunction here, just about was a lefty!!

Now for the shelf cutout, stay at least 1/16 to 1/8 from the depth you weant to cut.

This I will not recommend, but I do it anyway...

And result...

Here we are gonna start shaping on the handle, see how I DON'T cut glass with my bandsaw...   :scared:

Now the sides of the grip marked out...

Grind them out first, and similar below the grip area, you'll see that in a few pics here...

After some shaping on the spindle sander...

Awesome Kenny!
One of these days soon, I hope to make the leap into building my own glass/wood lam R/D Longbow.
I've been looking at a diamondwood riser, I think they have some really cool color schemes. I love all the grey patterns.

Hey Semo, the first step is the hardest! Gettin started. If you can do trilams and selfbows, these are a walk in the park for ya!!  :D

Where am I? Oh yeah, shapin on the spindle...

Here is why you don't cut full depth, if you radius the corner, there is less chance of breakin. If you will notice,a lot of riser breaks go diagonal down from the corner of shelf and side plate. Nock file is what I use, some go with a bigger radius...

Then flatten from the radius on out and shape the shelf to suit...

Gettin closer..

She shoots - she scores!!

On the shootin machine to look at full draw tiller at 28"...

Still have lots of draw before she stacks...

So we go to 31"....

I think you can go 32",I didn't check tho....

Will have some finished pics by weeks end. Last check was 53# @ 28" . Only 2# lite. I'll take it!

Thanks!
While on the shootin machine, figured might as well set the chrony in front. Here are the numbers...

64" d/r

53#@28"

Shot at measured 28" with mech. release

These arrows are not tuned to bow, might make a little difference, but you can get an idea from it...

400 grains or 7.54  gpp -  198 fps
477 grains or 9.00  gpp -  187 fps
603 grains or 11.38 gpp -  170 fps
