Title: Advice on Osage Find
Post by: DLH on December 01, 2010, 09:15:00 PM
I found some osage that I can get but couple things worry me. The guy said the been cut for about 5 years and are in a brush pile was wondering if this would affect the wood being in the weather I know osage is tough but that made me wonder. The second thing is do you think bugs could have got into it? I don't want to waste my time to get it even though I am going to get a good deal on it. Anyway to tell if its good or not I will have a drawknife with me too. He also told me I could look through them and have my pick so I thought it would be worth the time.

Thanks in advance

Daniel

You won't know until you see it. Bugs could be in it, it could be checked on the ends.

He said they were about a foot in diameter so I was thinking the checks wouldn't be a big problem?

If they were pushed into a pile, be careful pulling things out. There might be some spring loaded branches in the pile.
If cut into logs bring a sledge and wedges to open up the logs. This will tell you a lot about the wood.

Heck if you pulled them all out and got the all split to find no good bow wood you still have some really good fire wood.
Good luck,
Kelly

What length are they?  I would be more worried about checks in the ends than bugs.

The guy told me that they were about 6 feet but they vary. I'm hoping the turn out good and he said that another guy got some of it for bow wood so I think it should be useable.

Cut the ends off and make billets, splice to get bow length. if large enough, take the inside split to get away from the bugs.
or mill into lumber for a backed bow.
You should have some bow wood in that heap.
Be careful.
