Yesterday a new herter was born.
The riser is Osage with Massaranduba-accents.
Limbs are cherry with massaranduba powerlam under clear glass.

YES!....Excellent..nice power lam in there as well. I glued up another Herters 46" last week myself.
Very nice ! Love the wood combo in the riser, that's gonna look fantastic when finished.

today i glued up a riser overlay in osage, and shaped the limbs. pics will come tomorrow. i had to repair cars today, so there was no spare time for a shooting session.

hey guys,
yesterday my herter died. i braced it first time and it was looking good so far. but if i pulled on the string, i noticed that the limbs are very unstable at twisting. i thought: "ok, this ist a very short bow and there´s a lot of reflex in the lims, get it in tiller, and get used to a very straight pull!"
fifteen minutes later, the tiller was good. i debraced it and worked on the riser. 45 minutes later, the shelf and the handle was raw cut and rasped. i braced the herter the second time for shootin some arrows. after bracing i controlled the string for line-up in the middle of the limb. on the lower limb the string was about 1/8" offset. i tried to adjust it (pushed it in the middle of the limb), it snaped around and the lower limbcore collapsed.

Too bad, Hermann. That's a lot of work to see broken. Hope the next one works out for you.
Dang!! It was looking goo too.
What a pity, Hermann. That was a very nice little bow. Most of us have been down that road and we know that this can happen, but it still hurts when it happens. Best thing to do is start another one right away.

i think that was the problem. i did NOT use tapers. So the recurve was to hard, and made the rest of the limb unstable.
But the sadness faded away, when i was grinding my new riser (shedua) and cutting my hick-lams yesterday... :goldtooth:

hello bert,
i use .04 glass for all of my bows. i have 2 forms for 58" Recurves, 1 62" Longbow-Form, and the herter-Form it works well for all of them.

I would use a total taper of .002 per inch Herm...that will really gets the tips to open up at brace and full draw. Good luck
