What size air compressor can I get away with for spraying bows with. I wont be running other equipment with it so I want to stay small in size if I can.
If you use a small sprayer or air brush, you can use a hobby size compressor. I have a very small pancake compressor I got at Wally World for 65.00. It works good for spraying small projects, tires, even blowing off my work.
I have used a mini sprayer and my air brush with it.. works good.
I'm using a HVLP top feed sprayer that requires 40psi not an air brush, I was hopeful a pancake type would work.
40 psi should work. Just use short burst.. then let the compressor build back up a bit. The thing with the small compressors is they build pressure quick.. just can not handle long durations.
Being that the bow is so small with all things considered.. should be fine. I have a HVLP also, but never tried it. My mini sprayer is a bottom feed and only needs about 25 to 30 psi..so works great. The air brush is a no brainer.. hardly uses any air.
Do you need to use a moisture separator inline from compressor to sprayer?

I have a 5hp compressor and I have two dryers on the line. Was getting water in the paint till I added the second one. Also it helps if you drain the tank before painting.
I would. Even if it is a throw away style. I get mine from harbor freight for like 3 or 4 bucks and they attach to the bottom of the sprayer.. with the small compressors you will be good. James is right with the large compressors, there is a lot of temperature change that creates moisture.
