Title: Bandsaw or not bandsaw, that is the question !
Post by: mand0ralen on November 22, 2010, 12:50:00 PM
hello, i am thinking to build my first bow this christmas ... however, i do not own a bandsaw for that, and they seems to be quite expensive here (if you want something usable).

I was thinking to use a fixed circular saw for the laminations and the limbs. do you think it might be possible ? any feedback or use of the circular saw ?

Your help will be much appreciated.

best regards,

M

Hi M, am I right you want to cut your own lams ? You can use a table saw if you don't have a band saw. For cutting out the limbs there are different options. On my first bows I have used an electrical jig saw with a metal blade and it worked out fine. Just a bit more sanding to do. On my internet page you can find a build along on how I have done it. Check out the download section for the longbow build along.

BTW: Nice to see someone else from Switzerland here on trad gang  :-)

i agree with swissbow you can cut lams with a table saw with some planning ahead. a coping saw will work for some of the profile cutting, but so will a jig saw if you have access to one.either way just remember to give yourself enough room to clean up with a sander or similar hand tools, power tools can ruin a bow quickly if youre too hasty. good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
