The USDA Forest Products Laboratory has just released the latest edition of their Wood Handbook: Wood as an Engineering Material. I haven't begun reading it yet but see it has 20 chapters covering wood in more ways than bowyers will need, including some we will be interested in, like mechanical characteristics, drying, and more.
You can download the whole thing for free (15.1MB) or get individual chapters.
I hope it proves useful.

Thanks, Joe. That's the bible for us serious wood folks. I've had my copy for decades.
Thanks, Joe. Just glanced through the chapters and see some interesting reading.
