Title: St Jude Youth Bow build completed.
Post by: TimZeigler on November 03, 2010, 10:35:00 AM
Just a post to update Amar911 on the progression of the build.  I've emailed him with updates over the last few months and he thought ya'll might like to see where we're at.

Thanks to Allan for waiting patiently as I knew when I put this up for auction that it was going to take a while to complete due to work commitments, as well as famly responsibilites.

The hardest parts are just about done. 90% of the glueing is done; have to complete the tip overlays, and limb overlays.  Tillering is shaping up out to 20", and hope to have it fully tillered to 24" over the next few days.  Then the fun part will begin; shaping the riser.

We went with a Bocote riser, and limb lams from Kenny, as well as Cocobolo I'beam and wedges again from Kenny.  The accent stripes do not pass all the way thru the I beam for a nice clean look once the window is cut.

More to follow...

Got alot more done since the last update.  Limbs are mounted, and 90% tillered @24, just have to work on the limb timing.  Riser is rough sanded.  I took it out and shot it at its 24" inches of draw using 1616 aluminums and it hums.  Cut the window to near (1/16th) center shot.  More to follow as the sanding progresses.

I'm quite impressed as to how this looked going in, and then, the almost finished product. What are the limbs made of?

Quite a stunning project....

You are to be congratulated for giving others incentive with projects such as this.

Much Aloha... Tom

Thanks everyone!

Tom - The limb cores are Bocote, same wood as the riser.  Kenny M did a great job of picking out the woods for this bow.

That looks SLICK Tim!!   :clapper:

Ahem, either that rack is a bit behind the bow, or it is one like deer I usually run across! LOL   :D

I'm loving the grain in that bocote.  Great sculpting in the riser.  Way to go!

Kenny - Thats a 2.5 yo buck that I took down in Texas last month.  I was hunting with Duckbutt on Mike Palmers place and he gave us the go ahead on any 8 point despite age.  I watched him for 2 days and decided to take the shot.  He wasn't huge but had a real pretty symetrical rack.  It was also my first bow buck, and it only took 24 years. LOL. Shot him with my Schafer built Silvertip.

Tim,

When I was bidding on the opportunity to have you build a bow that I could give to someone close to me, I never dreamed it would end up being such an incredible masterpiece. Even when we talked on the phone and discussed the woods, riser design, and other specifications of the bow, I thought it would be very nice, but nothing like how it is turning out. You are blowing me away with your craftsmanship and eye for the aesthetic qualities of the bow, in addition to the performance qualities. My biggest regret is that the bow is far too small for me, so I will need to stay with my original plan of giving it as a gift to a smaller person. I won't say who that person is because he/she might hear about it before the gift has been received.

I have this feeling that I am about to get a bunch of offers from those who have their own ideas about the person who ought to end up with this bow. I don't blame anyone who covets something so special.

Thanks for taking me up on my suggestion to post a sort of build along on the bow. It's nice for me and everyone else to be able to enjoy your talents as you work and to see the bow in various stages of completion. I am eager to see and hold the bow, but take your time and savor the experience. That's exactly what I am doing through this thread.

Allan

She sure is purty!Congrats on that beauty of a bow.
I have always wanted something with such purty wood grain as that one has. Now that I am learning to build a bow myself I am hoping that I can make one like that for myself.
