Title: Tip Overlays and backing
Post by: nlester on October 29, 2010, 11:59:00 AM
How thick of a piece of wood should I glue on for my tip overlays?  I assume that I can back it after that??

Maybe someone could show some pictures of their overlays to give you an idea. They are fairly thin. I'm thinking 1/4 in. or less. If you search you should find some examples.

You would start with a pc. that is thicker and work it down to what you like.

from what i have seen , people do the backing either under the top overlay , or butting up right around it....

id wait for someone with more experience to make your decision , i am still new...

What backing are you using?

Normally you apply the tip overlays last, after the backing has been applied.  Here's an example:

Yep, back first then add the overlay.

On the very nice example pictured above you can see the mating surface for the overlay was cut at an angle toward the belly. This lets you have a more slender overlay and not have a big hump perched on the back of your bow.

Nathan, You need to come by the house sometime and pick out a stave so we can get you started on an osage bow. You won't need anything to back it with except a thin layer of air.

I have several trees that I need to cut after deer season and I got plenty in the garage.

The last one I finished I did leather tip overlays soaked in CA glue. Hard as a rock and turned out looking great.

Stiks,
Can't wait!  I'm in the process of making a board bow.  I've been hunting any free moment I can get.  We'll get together soon.  I'm fired up and can't wait to get started.

I hear ya, I been trying to get in the woods myself as much as possible. Work and church have made it tuff but revival is over and I will have more time to hunt as long as I don't have to work anymore saturdays.
