Title: Need Bowyer's Opinions please
Post by: Yankee Bill on October 25, 2010, 09:51:00 PM
I hope this is not too far off topic for this forum, and apologize in advance if it is.

I'm not a Bowyer by any stretch of the imagination, but have a question if one of you guys might be able to help out. I picked up a cheap Samick Spirit II 60" 40# @ 28 (I draw 27") to use as a rehab bow for a Rotator Cuff injury I'm working through, until I can get back to shooting my heavier bows.

The grip is a bit large for my hand and I was wanting to contour it a little for a better fit. I don't need to remove a large amount of wood, but a fair amount (for lack of a better term), maybe 1/8" or so, off the circumference of the grip. I know this is probably tough to answer without knowing exactly how much wood will be removed, but do you think doing so, within reason, will comprimize the integrity of the bow?
Also, would that amount of wood being removed from the finished grip of a bow be considered excessive by Bowyer's standards?

One of my concerns is that this Takedown has a long (21") riser, and I thought that might possibly cause some type of "leverage concern" at the grip area if I removed that amount of wood.

Appreciate any input you may have to offer.

Thanks,

YB

I'd go for it. Just take your time and go easy and you should be fine modifying the grip.

I'd go for it, too. That's not a lot of wood to remove from an area left beefy by design.  You could take it off evenly all around, or in particular places to make it more ergonomic.

Good luck, and speedy recovery.

No problem with a light bow that you have. The boys are right on. Knfemaker

Two measure ents to think about. 1 3/4 depth from front to deepest part of grip. 5 in circumferance. Also go light on taking off material from the thumb side. don't worry about what you do with the palm swell or any thing but the throat area. God Bless and good luck. Steve

Thank You Sixby,

That's the kind of stuff I was wanting to find out. Most of the material I need to remove is from the Palm Swell, so that's great to hear. I may need to take a little off the throat, but I'll be sure to stay within the confines of the measurements you stated.

Thanks again for the info, I appreciate the help.

You are talking about 37# at your draw. I wouldn't be concerned about it.
