Title: Tbb3 compatible with hide glue?
Post by: rainman on September 15, 2010, 10:14:00 PM
Anyone know if TBB3 will stick to hide glue?  Have a buddy who wants to put veneer over is sinew job.  I advised against it but he wants to try.

Yes it is. I glued a snake skin over sinew and hide glue with TBIII. Worked fine. The sinew will pick up moisture from the TBIII unless you seal it. I used a thin layer of TBIII and let it cure completely(over night) then added the skin with TBIII. The original TB sizing became a vapor barrier to prevent the moisture getting into the sinew.

Interesting idea.  Can he get the sinew flat enough?  Let us know the result.

He is getting the sinew flat enough.  He gets it wet then combs it out on a board.  Once dry he has nice flat strips.  The sinew job almost looks like fiberglass when he is done.  I think I convinced him a snake skin would be better over sinew.  He has used Birch bark as a backing before but that was wood to wood.
