Here's a spine tester that stores easily.
Not finished up real pretty, just a prototype but functional.

And a video of the works:
Vimeo Spine Tester in a Box (http://vimeo.com/14251466)
If you link to the video on Vimeo there, you'll also find a Lego robot cresting lathe.
If there is enough interest, I may draw up some plans or do a build along for the Spine Tester in a Box.
Thanks!
CJ
That is quite outstanding!
Oh, man! That is way cool! What degrees do you hold, CaptainJ?
I like it.
Stan
I think a build along if definitely in order. That is just way to cool, even if didn't check spine it would awesome, very nice workmanship.
Holy cow...that is OUTSTANDING! What a beautiful piece.
That thing is so sweet I wanna curse. But instead, can you please put together a build-a-long? Thanks you... from everybody who loves trad.
i see a build along in our future. awesome captainJ
Wow great idea. Looks fantasic

Couldn't have said it better myself!
Wow!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Did I just say WWWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWW!
Did you build it?
...I want one !!!!! VERY NICE
YES !!!!
Now that's cool as all get-out CaptainJ! Couple queations. Why are your end post set at 28" instead of the standard 26" for wood arrows? Or do you have it set for the 1.94 lb weight @ 28"? Also, does that dial indicator run backards with that setup? Great craftsmanship all around! ART B
QuoteApex Predator asked:
Did you build it?
Yes. I got tired of the old beast taking precious garage space so I designed and built this one.

Ha! The reason it's spaced at 28" is because I goofed. My draw length is 28" and I've been helping my son build some cane arrows and just had the # in my head. Pretty funny, didn't notice until I looked at the video and heard myself say 28"! Ah well, two more holes to drill and then I can say I designed it to be adjustable!
As for the dial indicator, it runs forward and stands straight up. That's why I went with the lever -for ease of use and reading. The lever is actually a parallelogram so the hook and press travel straighter up and down rather than sweeping in an arc.
Thanks for the encouraging comments gang!
And thanks Art for assuming I knew what I was doing!
CJ
I think you have won the traditional innovative idea of the year award with this one!
No kidding, Apex! I agree...and Capt'n, do you sleep at night or do ideas like this continually keep you up?
Amazing! Great job. OK, I was starting to build a basic barebones tester, and now I want to smash it in shame. Neil
I would love to see how to make one. Please do a build along.
WOW, that's absolutely fantastic ! Great job. I would love to see how you did that.

Amazing work!
Did you made blueprint for it? I would like to try to make it.
One of myne creations

Apply for a patent bub! That is really cool!
There I was, yesterday, at my buddies saw mill making rough lumber for future projects out of the black cherry trunks I pulled out of the woods thinking, "I am really getting something done." And now I open up this thread and see that all I've accomplished is is saw dust compared to the intricasies of your creation.
Very impressive work.

Wow nice Spinner there! Beautiful work.
I made a very rough concept model of it in the 3D modeling program 'Blender'. But no usable blueprint or plan yet. It really was a figure it out as I go prototype project.
You all have been very kind, you've encouraged me to go ahead and make up some plans for it, and when time permits, maybe I'll make another one and do a build along with it.
Thanks again for all the kind comments gang!

Wow, I'm the one who is jealous here. I'd love to get my hands on some of that. Hardwood is difficult to find here in Western Colorado.

Beautiful work. Cool for the lever idea!
Now that is probably one of the coolest inovations I have seen in archery ever! Plans and a build along would be awesome... or you could just tell me how much $$ you want for one of those!
Kevin.
Man that is the coolest thing ever.
I would love a set of plans or a buildalong
Larry
Indeed this is a great product. I would straight out buy one from you, I don't think I can reproduce something that nice.
Have you thought about going into production?
Very nicely done :)
Way cool!
Captain J,
That is a very nice design, I have an affection for spine testers as the designer of the Spine-O-Meter.
Someone suggested filing a patent but I think that is a waste of money and time.
I wrote a paper on converting 26" and 28" measurements to pounds spine so if you need it check my website www.oakcreekarchery.com. (http://www.oakcreekarchery.com.) I have been having a bit of trouble getting it linked from there so if you don't see it there send me you email address.
Kevin
Captain J,
Thank you for sharing that incredible spine tester. People like your self sharing your ideas and talents is what makes this site so great! Keep up the great work, and as so many have said, "Look forward to a build-along".
Anyone miss this, check it out.
After watching the video I suggest a leather strap handle mounted to one of the long thin sides for easy carrying. You know,,, like a briefcase.
Please send me the plans or a link to the build-along!!!!!
Thanks again for all the comments gang.
I am working on plans as well as a build along, but it may be a while in coming. Busy time for my family right now.
I'm going to try a needle indicator model too.
Thanks again!
CJ
Very nice. I like the way it folds up. No damage during storing it...

Don't you worry brother, you've got a following waiting for that buildalong.
Any luck with some plans for this great tool Captain J?
