For those of use with aspirations of creating our own do-all shop, I was hoping our friends who have learned a thing or 3 can show us pics of what their shops look like, what to make sure you do, and what to make sure you don't.
Looking forward to some great ideas!
You don't even want to see my shop! LOL
nor mine! d;^)
im with these guys, my shop is in my basement and more or less just my equipment scattered around where it was close enough to outlets. i still have to figure out storage for tools and such yet, as well as sharing the space with the rest of our storage stuff, so its quite a mess.lol. if i ever get it the way i want it ill post some pics.
Come on, fellers! I'm getting ready to build a new shop and could use a few ideas :)

Dick will you adopt me?

Wow, I need to mow the lawn. The carp shooting boat is optional.
Don't forget good lighting and dust collection. I put two 4' windows over the workbench.
Leaving the dust collector outside wasn't an option, so I put it in a seperate room with the air compressor. From there I can vent it outside or back through the hepafilters.
I split the shop in half, this is the clean half. No cutting or sanding is done in the clean half. This bench is for non-bowbuilding activities, such as building strings or fixing the lawnmower.
This is the spray room, it's big enough to finish four bows at a time, but not so big that I can't keep it clean.
Greg..... Wow! That's great. My shop works well for me, but I'm so envious of the space and light you have.
Mine is the basement and it is like a dungeon and a bomb went off in it...lol.
This is awesome! And guys, just cause your shop looks like a bomb went off in it doesn't mean we can't learn from it!
My 12 x 12 shop. Used to be my Dad's place till he passed on. I cherish the memories created here! No pics of Dad in the shop but now my Son, Daughter and Grandkids will have a place to tinker when I'm gone

4est, one suggestion I would make is to have your main working vice with 360* access. Mount it on a pedestal(well secured) in the center of the floor space so you can work all around it and not just from one side like with a bench mounted vice.
I also like a bowyers bench for most of my tillering work, from floor tiller on. I have better control using my bench later on in the tillering process and the vice early on for the grunt work.
OK, here's my shop in 7 pics:

It's only 24' square so to maximize floor space I went with a lofted design on three sides to give me some above-head storage. I keep finished pieces, lumber, and misc. stuff up there.
05 shows my most used hand tools ready to go.
06 shows my "bench" built with its mitered tenon base, stacked 1/2 sheet of plywood top, and clamping edges all around.
07 shows how I combined my benchtop tablesaw with my router and tool chest. I can lift out the router top, secure it vertically, and do horizontal routing.
What I need now is a heating/cooling solution and a dust collection system. It goes without saying I'd like a bigger bandsaw and tablesaw.

Those are some great looking shops, fellas. I don't have a picture of my newly renovated "3rd Bay" but will may be get around to it one of these days. Right now it is being used to help replace the gas tank for my 96 Jimmy. If the wind and storm hadn't hit 1/2 an hour ago I would have finished the job. Don't want to be caught under the vehicle that is sticking half way out of the building when a big wind hits. I don't trust my jacks that much.
Well, the sun is just starting to shine, again, so it is off to finish the job and get the shop back to a wood working space, as it should be.
My shop is still in progress. It is an 8'x24' room that I sectioned off from the garage. Since I am limited on space, I have everything mounted on wheels. I just roll out whatever tool I need and then put it back when I'm done.
I just finished insulating it so I can heat and cool it. I have a bunch of staves stored above it.
It is a big mess right now, I am still moving stuff in from my old house and haven't got everything organized yet.

Man you guys aren't playin around; those are some terrific shops.
I don't know how you guys can think and concentrate in a clean organized work shop. I need chaos and loud music.
nice shops, I wish I had one but I have to work outside
Love the use of magnets Dublin Joe. Man these pics sure are inspiring. I'm hoping I can post pics of my own soon.
Outside, I use the right side for my workshop, the left holds my small tractor, lawnmowers and garden tools.

My messy shop, warms my heart just to walk into it.
Your grizzly green tools warm my heart Eric! Is that a gymnastics horse you converted into a stave vise?
Eric, I aspire to have my shop as organized(messy) as yours. First I have to build my husband a new barn and maybe he'll all of his stuff out of my shop...I mean the garage.
LOL Longbowwoman. My shop used to be in my wifes garage in our basement. The house would get covered with fine Osage dust, as would the drivers seat of her car when I pulled it back in for the night. When she got to work in the morning she would have to dust the Osage dust off her pants:) Didn't take much for her to let me invest 10 grand in an outside Bow Shop... Now we are both happy:)
very nice shops indeed..
Well, right now, I'm still building it. 14X20 with a gambrel roof and second floor storage. I made it 7 ft. to the ridge upstairs so I could walk around up there. Got the roof done last night. Kinda slow going when you are working on it during nights and weekends, but at least softball season is over!
Here are a few of the things I made for my shop.
Fletching table, lazy Susan type.
Glue-up table and C-clamp storage.
Drying box and stave/billet storage
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/100_0023.jpg)
Ahhh guys, i envy you with your great shops and all your fancy tools. I don't have my own shop, nor a lot of tools. I can use the shop of my friend Phil. It measures 3 x 5 meters and there's plenty of stuff stored in it. Sometimes we're up to three people working in it at the same time. I wonder how we get along without stepping on each others feet all the time...LOL But hey, it's a place where i can build my bows so i'm happy with it.

Andy
I'm envious, boys. My "shop" is the backyard.
Stan
I love all the great photos of the shops in this thread...My shop is too dirty to show though!
I need to clean things up some...thanks for the inspiration guys!
Ok, I cleaned up the shop a little so here is the updated photo. You can see the tillering tree against the back wall. When I use it, I have a longer rope so I can stand back away from it and get a better view. I also made a new sign for the door. "Osage Outlaw Bows"
i have some pics everyone might be interested in. im not in a neighbor hood where the lots are big enough to have a seperate shop from the house so i use the garage.i used to have a free standing work bench, but thought the garage deserved more than that.. so i built these cabinets to store all the tools and supplies. ive been tied up in another project on my family home so i havent been workin on these or any bows for a while but i thought that those who just have a garage to work out of might appreciate these pics , thanks for lookin, ruddy (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics031.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics032.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics029.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics028-1.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics028.jpg) (http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt101/broketooth/kitchentremodelshoppics027.jpg)sorry about the mess

Hey Marty is that a home made edge sander? Any chance we can get a couple more pics of that thing? I've been looking to make my own and my ideas look like your sander!
Ya Marty, what fish said..
I also was going to comment about that. Do you use it alot? Looks handy. Mark
Mater yes I use it alot for Limbs and Risers.
I will get more pics thanks. (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/zbowsticks/TOOLS/IMG_0278.jpg) (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/zbowsticks/TOOLS/IMG_0163.jpg)

Those look like they would save me a million hours. I would happily take any pics you give us. Thanks Marty.
I'm not about to embarrass myself by showing pictures of my shop, which serves two fold as a garage, but the mess is such that you couldn't squeeze a vehicle in there if there was a hail storm coming and I had 2 days to prepare for it! :scared: :knothead:
Wow, Some of you guys are set up! Someday I hope to have something half that nice.
It's been a while, and I finally have the pics to post of my own "shop". It changes every week, depending on the project. Split, mobile benches that can be clipped together to create either a 48" X 48" bench or 96" X 24" bench, give me a ton of flexibility. It does get crowded at times, but i'm sure we all feel that way. My brainasium is my favorite part. Hours get lost there on a regular basis. I did 90% of this with things I kept from when I renovated our house this past winter. Old full doors, bi-fold doors, and even the kitchen counters and an old dresser became benches, shelves, and didn't cost me a dime. It still needs finishing IMO, but I still love it the way it is too. The furnace, and overhead shelving was existing. I removed another section equal to the existing overhead shelf cause it was too much, and it turned into a bench by the fire pit. Otherwise I stripped the garage to sheathing, and started from there. I re-used light fixtures and gave the shop more than 12x the lumens it started with. It's also equipped with 220, and I intend on putting a window and door leading to the back yard in the near future.

Way too clean to be an active shop fishy! Get some dust stirring would ya'..........thats a dam fine band saw by the way. NICE
Thanks PD. I figured if i'm going to get one, I better get one and be done. 2 hours is quite a ways to come split lumber but if you ever need to resaw some stuff, load the truck and help yourself brother.
well that is a nice shop fish, now stop showing it off and get some bows built.
Fish, that's a sissy pant's no dust shop:) LOL
I know John Sturdevant's shop looks like a chemical company clean room.
Man if you guys only knew how much dust is really in that garage... you'd definitely be singing a different tune. I HATE dust, but I love shavins. My next purchase is going to be a dust collector for sure. Even before I get a compressor.
Kelly - There's a bow billet on the bench brother!
Roy - I willingly accept my new name of "Sissy Fish Pants". :goldtooth:
Hey man Im a "sissy pant 3 under shooter"! He only says that crap because he safely nestled away in PA where we cant reach his old, crusty butt!
Hey fish n chicks, that's a nice shop you have there. Mine's crowded and I'm always bumping into things or trying not to trip over extention cords. Is the overhead furace a gas burner or electric? That's something I could use. it gets cold here in winter.
Dave.
P.S. If the furnace burns gas be careful about wood dust in the air while it's on.
I feel sad I only have a draw knife, rasp and sandpaper. The old guy I knew (mentor) use to laugh and say whats the draw knife for. He built self bows for 50 years with just 2 rasps. A really big one (2 foot ) COURSE and the other one was FINE one (foot long).
I will get some pics of my shop today even though it isn't as great as some of your guys stuff
Love the pics of the shops. We just sold our house and my shop is in about a hundred totes and small storage unit. But just as soon as we get our new house done I get to start with a clean slate in a 24x30 that is setting on my drafting table at the moment. Thanks for the ideas.
Semo sorry bud but I have had to promise that I would not let the overcrowded garage guys to influence me any more and I would walk the straight path and keep the new shop like fish's. :)
Here are some pics of my messy shop. These are several months old..the shelves in that last pic I went to the floor with them and that wall is pretty well loaded with stuff now.All the old tin came from an old milk stall at the ranch.
It's official... I have total shop envy! lol My hideaway is tucked in the basement. Really need to get it organized. You guys have the right idea!

AKmud,
Nothing wrong with that set up, I think all of the shops are a lot better then mine.
It's all in your perspective, isn't it KellyG? Recently a friend turned a garden pumphouse/garden tool storage shed into a woodshop for me. You'd think I had the best shop ever! Everytime I walk into it I kind of exhale and relax just breathing the sawdust and other shop smells. As long as we have a dry place to make woodchips we are good to go!
here is my shop, err, my shed. LOL

BUE! You have a fine shop sir. I love it.
What is the machine in the center? Hitachi jointer/planer combo?

Took the words right out of my mouth... i mean keyboard.
The machine in the center is a Robland, Belgian made combination machine with cast iron tables weighing about a thousand pounds, It has jointer, planer, circular saw, a 30 mm router spindle and a mortiser that can be added to the planer arbor. It is a solid machine that has served me well for many years. Bue--.

Please do. I made a sign on our CNC machine that says "The Boars Nest".

Looks like an airplane hanger for Piper Cubs....... :bigsmyl: nice....
West Texan, what's that white thing back in the far left corner for? :)
Roy, that's where the Urac is stored so it won't go bad! :D ;)
Dave.
Ha Roy right now it just has a few power tools and a couple welding hoods stored in it. The compressor is worn out and I haven't found a replacement yet.
I was out cutting some A-boo lams and decided to snap a shot of the playroom. It's starting to get a little tight in there. I would plan an expansion project, but the only way to go is into the horse pen. And the wife is not having it!!!! :biglaugh:

Thats what I was thinking Kenny,Always like to see shop shots but Tracy brings a new take. I used to trap for the counties my self but Tracy takes it to a new level,LOL
Good stuff

Ok, for those of you who abhor a dust free and uncluttered shop, this is what mine looked like yesterday:
I think this is just about as bad as it's been. My wife says it makes her sick to her stomach...
:jumper:
Wow! Some of y'alls shops are bigger than my house!
My shop used to be a sauna; I drag my stuff out and work in the yard
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/bjornweb/DSCN0591-1.jpg)
Thats a nice looking sauna. I don't know if I could give up my sauna for a bow shack. If it came down to it I know I would but I wouldn't be happy! At least you will always be warm in the winter!
David, my wife shudders when she comes in my shop! A man's gotta have his stuff!!
Kinda like shoes for most girls!!
I like to hang out in my bow shop cause I'm the Boss out there.
Until the door opens:)
or the cell phone rings. Then I get all flustered and bothered until I accept the call... hehem "Hello?" :saywhat:
