Title: which strings?/material?
Post by: Johan van Niekerk on August 10, 2010, 03:00:00 PM
How many of you use dacron vs fastflight etc? And whats the preferences in terms of endless loops vs flemish twists?
Basically I want to know what make you choose your specific string type..

on selfbows i do my strings all in flemish twist with dacron.

on recurves/longbows (glass) i use since about one year endless-loop strings only. some in ff, some in dacron.

in my opinion a endless string is harder (less stretching), faster, quieter. endless-loop strings in ff are more hard, fast and quiet.

I use DF-97  because it seems to last longer than my older D-50 strings.  I think it has a bit better abrasion resistance.  I think it helps to remove a bit of hand shock, and is quicker.  I use flemish because I like the adjust-ability of them, and I gave my endless jig away years ago, need to build another.  It also seems quieter.

I use only B-50 Dacron. Not enough difference in performance over FF from what I can see, costs less and IMO, quieter than FF or other non stretch string materials. I like a Flemish twist with a bowyers knot on the bottom limb.  I find the Flemish is quieter and more traditional.
I haven't gotten as traditional as natural fibers but I am comfortable and confident with B-50 Dacron after 25+ years.

I use Dacron on selfbows. Prior to shooting selfbows I used B 50 on my FG bows too. Jawge

Flemish B-50 for me, too.

I'm so new to bowery that the spool I bought will keep me in strings for years to come.

I like the adjustablility of the loop/knot combo.

I am an endless loop fan and I use B 50 because guys keep trying ff and give away their b50.... some what of a no cost factor...

450+ on all of my wood and glass bows for many years now...softer than FF but stronger.  Quick and quiet but most of all it takes lots of the vibration out of bows.

I prefer D 97, its only a little louder than D 50, but doesn't buzz as long as D  50 after the shot because it doesn't stretch, you can make strings that are 10 -15 fps faster than D 50 if you make skinny strings, 10 or 12 strands instead of 24, they are still plenty strong 500 to 600lbs. FF is louder than D 97 and seems to stretch. Can't tell any difference in performance between endless loop and flemish, but I prefer the looks of flemish and shoot them on bother recurves and longbows without problems.
