Title: my 2nd bow is coming along....
Post by: Badwithabow on July 31, 2010, 02:16:00 PM
Well my 1st one ended up with a cracked domed limb... I think the culprit was my fiberglass pressure strip which also cracked and domed so i scrapped that and bought some 1/8 aluminum and 1/4 inch pvc which i will stack on top of the aluminum so get rid of the doming problem... I'll snap some pics soon as i can......

If i can put my 2 cents worth in, i've only built 3 kids bows and on my second adult bow and the problem i encountered the most was "me" slow down and take more time before glueing do 2 or 3 dry runs it will help eliminate glueup problems and then after you cook it do the same take your time. just my 2 cents

Hey Brandon, I didn't think to ask if you were airhosing or banding. I saw you used bungee straps ,that is the dome effect I guess?

Can't wait to see the lams in the 2nd under glass!

yea kenny the bottom limb was PERRRFECT but that one the top glass strip cracked and the whole thing domed..... man.... no way to see that coming...the bungees actually provide a lot of flat pressure b/c i pull em as tight as they'll go before laying them over the form.....

So 2nd one i spent all day yest getting everything to fit just right... looked like a million bucks so i glued her up. I made a pressure strip from aluminum and a 1 in piece of pvc lattice and dag blamit if the stupid pvc didn't melt and my bungee's lost a 1/4 inch each... over all the wraps i did that was a lot of pressure so i didn't get good contact resulting in alot of spots under the glass... man i swear if it wasn't for bad luck..... ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR no way to see it comin... i think the next one i'll just use the alum strip...

I'm going to just use an aluminum strip....

I'm torn up here its like i've done everything i can to make sure it sure it works and dern it if it don't work.... so aluminum strip is what i'm gonna do next...

Don't know what happened to the PVC Brandon.  I have it on all my pressure strips.  I normally stay between 140-160 in the oven.  Maybe your thermometer is off.  I feel real good that my pressure strip is doing a good job.  I feel like that narrower pvc strip down the middle prevents my lams from bowing in the middle and squeezes the glue out well.  Using the bicycle innertubes like I do, there is lots of redundancy with multiple wraps on each dowel peg.  I've never had a strip fail though.
