Title: Removing wax
Post by: billy shipp on July 08, 2010, 11:02:00 PM
I have a bow finished with Thunderbird epoxy. I want to apply another coat or two of T-bird, but the bow has been waxed a couple of times.
I need to get all the wax off before applying more finish....what's best to remove the wax?

What kind of wax? Some will come off with acetone and some like paraffin will come off with naphtha.

It has 1 coat of Johnsons paste wax, then 1 coat of Pledge spray wax.

Probably acetone or denatured alcohol will remove those waxes. Maybe you should do a test first to be sure.

The bow has some pores that were not filled by the first T-bird finishing. Basically, all I'm wanting to do is fill the pores with the new finish, and down in the pores is where the wax will or should be the hardest to remove.
I'll wipe it down good with Acetone and denatured alcohol, then try a very small area first.
I'm planning on filling the pores with a rag, sanding smooth, then brushing a thin coat on the entire riser....any tips or tricks I should know before attempting this?
