I looking to stain some maple veneers like a gray/black, is there any think i should stay away from when it comes to stain, oil based, water based or alcohol based, whats your advice on this? I want to be 100% sure the glue adheres!
Thanks in advance.
Tommy
Use water or alcohol based stains only--NO oil based.
I agree with Trux. I have had good luck with alcohol based aniline dyes, never tried the water based. I have heard it will raise the grain. A little aniline dye goes along ways.
thanks guys your help is much appreciated.
I used green aniline dye to stain some maple laminations one time. After the glue up, the colour had faded quite a bit. I used water. I don't know if alcohol would've made a difference. If I do it again, I'll just make it darker next time.
I tried water with this dye I am using and it made the veneers warp or curl up.I went with 99% alchohol and they didn't change shape. The grain really showed up nice.
