Title: replacing old backing
Post by: walkabout on May 30, 2010, 12:31:00 PM
i have been working on refinishing my first bow built, and am thinking about pulling off the original paper backing and giving it a new one. the current backing has lifted in a few spots, one of which is center of limb, a little bubble. this backing also has wrinkles in it which makes me want to redo it even more. anyone think ill have problems doing this?

What kind of wood backing is on your bow?

Richard, if you used Tite Bond glue you can heat it and it should scrape off pretty well. When the TB glues hit 150deg(F) they release. I have removed hickory backing by heating it up with a heat gun and peeling it off. Never tried with a paper backing but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just be careful not to scorch the bow's back.

i figured it wouldnt hurt to try so i sanded/scraped and carefully peeled till i got the paper off then glued the new backing on. it turned out much better than the original one.

ill post a few pics of it after i trim the excess off tomorow then after i commit to staining a pattern on the paper or just painting it. its had a total sand and refinish so far and tips narrowed to reduce some handshock.

posting a few pics of the backing after excess is trimmed and the grain on the belly.   (http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o406/p0go333/100_0464.jpg) pic of near full length   (http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o406/p0go333/100_0465.jpg) pic of limb grain on belly (http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o406/p0go333/100_0468.jpg) pic of knots on bottom limb  (http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o406/p0go333/100_0469.jpg) im probably going to stain the backing with some walnut stain. i thought about giving it a pattern but im not sure if ill get the results i want.
