Title: The father son hail merry build along
Post by: greyhawk39 on May 26, 2010, 11:07:00 PM
My and I we decided to build a bow from stratch we took a unproven form and recipe and riser and came up with a one piece 52"bow.He build the bow himself with my guidance...Here he is grinding his desert camo riser.

His next move is to drill a index hole for the center of the riser, then fit test to the form to check for center then glue up.

The wood clamped in place and heat lamps in the right position,I put the insulated foil back and let sit for 5 hrs.

After the 5 hr period we removed the riser and ran it through the grinder to square up the edges.

After he squared the riser, I did a relief cut then I cut the curves out with the band saw.

Looking great!  You need to be careful with those lamps though.  At that distance mine will catch wood on fire.  Smooth-on epoxy will boil around 200 deg, and cause bad stuff to happen down the road.  I use a meat thermometer to check temp.  I try to keep them around 12" away for around 130-140 deg.

Thanks fellas. My Joel is hard drived for building bows he just loves it.We have been building together since he was little.I used to get him to get on the other end of the performax and help me make laminations, just so to include him. Thanks Marty I will have to move the lights out abit farther...I only have 35 watt bulbs running. But I will have to check what temp I am at under the foil insulation...By the way that was a nice ebony longbow great job...Bj also nice 46" herters one piece I talked to Rodney Wright, on the history on how he came to make the stalker bow.I will have more pics tonight..thanks again...Jeff

That's looking great ! A great way to spend some good time with your son. I'm currently building a bow with my daughter Caroline and we both enjoy it very much. Their bows will always be special to them since they poured their heart into it.

I rechecked Marty I have 60watt bulbs and yes they even through the heat but slow turtle wins the race, heat wise when drying glue.Caroline looks like she enjoys building bows with dad.
One thing about it,they are away from the Xbox.

After he made his parrells to .60'.He then cut to length and prep them so the dye can be applied.

After we mixed the dye and set up the air brush and compressor preset the pressure to 15 lbs we are set to put the first strip of green camo.

Then brown and a lighter brown and feathered the green over both.

The finished product it turned out better than we thought it would with the edge grain red elm is gave it a bamboo kind of look.

With a light hand he nicely feathers the dye with out splotches to the wood...he did a great job for never handling a air brush before, right on buddy.

We will be glueing up tomorrow.

We tried hockey sock tape, it has alot elasticity that and puts alot of pressure and takes the heat really well.
Here is my mutant hot box that I can leave outside and make bows all year round,it has a R5 value with 4 200 watt lite bulbs.

After the edges are cleaned up,we will grind to rough shape
 (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss64/greyhawk39/IMG_0103-1.jpg)
Time to file the knocks,he puts his chain saw guide.

After the grooves are filed,we put the sting on and find it pulling to the left.I file alittle deeper on that side and all is good pulling straight to center.

With the tiller stick in place,we check to see if the limbs are pulling equal. The left limb is the stiffer of the two.Removed the tiller stick and measured from fade outs to the string and found the left limb 3/4"heavier than the right limb.So we sand the left limb and stretched the string,we remeasured the  fade outs to the string and we are about a 1/8 difference from top to bottom.

Hey Scott, it is made of compressed foam insulation with tin glued to it called a "utilidor panel".We use this to insulate a row of flowlines or pipe so we don't have to insulate each pipe,I guess a cheap way for the oil companies.

Howdy Matt we hit the wall so far.We have to sand and then put the finish on plus the rest.  We should be done by friday...Jeff.

The reason we named her that. The form was umproven, we made up a recipe off the top of our heads and we taped the laminations down instead of rubber bands or the fire hose system.Plus the riser shape and the dye were all one big experiment. But not to pat each others backs we are really proud of her. I am going to make a big kids version of it in the near future. The next one is going to be pressed with C clamps.I didn't get the pressure from the tape that  I wanted and have the odd dry spot in places.Thank's for the nice words.

Second, this has inspired me to get my rear in gear and learn the art of being a bowyer.  My son is only 10 months old, so I have a little time to learn.
