What is a good DIY finish for woods like Bocote,Rosewood? I tried polyurethane last week and the bow riser is still tacky? I forgot to clean with acetone after finish sanding, could that be the problem? Thanks for any advice.
I can't get poly to dry without sealing with a couple coats of superglue. I use a latex glove and do a small area at a time til the riser or limb edges are coated, then fine sand. If you sand thru the glue, add more.
Gotta have GOOD ventilation,prefer outside.
Oh yeah, you can poly or finish as you like after the superglue.
Shellac would probably seal the oily wood before adding poly. I've not tried it on bows but have used shellac to seal unpaintable areas with good results. I would do a test first though.
Unwaxed shellac would stick to it, and make a good sealer coat. Then aply poly over that.
make sure it's unwaxed shellac.
Kenny I bet I've put 15 coats, and sanded back off, on the coco glue up you did for me last Spring. Finally did the super glue trick last weekend but had a couple of spots not seal up good. Got it sanded back down and ready for another go this weekend. At least I'll have all the pores filled...
I'd heard about coco, et. al. but never had any trouble with stuff like ipe, osage, etc on self bows. Coco is a whole nuther world! ;-)
Try a product called Deft from WallyWorld . I have used it on oily woods before, after a few coats , I then put a coulple coats of Min Wax Paste Finishing Wax. to help with water protection.

The two part epoxy finishes work every time. Ive used thunderbird and fullerplast. Both great products. You dont need anything under them, or use the same product if you want a sealer-filler coat. Mark
Mater,
I think that is what I'm going to try,Thanks
