Post by: Cherry Tree on May 09, 2010, 12:08:00 AM
Ive been doing some looking into static recurves and i think now im ready to start but......ive never seen how wide or narrow you should make them i know it depends on the wood choice,im going with Elm so any thought on this would help alot! and pictures of some with the design?,and if backing what kind?,what wood choice?,etc....would help alot also!

Here you go, Bamboo Backed Walnut/Osage 60" long
60# @ 28". (http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh216/quartermoonlongbows/IMG_0202.jpg)

Bert, I've loved that bow since you posted it a year or so ago.
I leave my tips relatively wide while bending so I can make adjustments later. Generally with selfbow, straight limbs and recurves, you will have to tweak them with both additional heating and wood removal so the tips line up with each other and the string track true. With recurves these two things are critical.

Thanks Pat,
I designed it myself after the 1950's Bear static recurves, hence the name "Yellow Bear"
I build a lot of "glass" bows and I keep myself sane doing the all wood bows for myself, will be hunting with this one, actually came very close to killing a Turkey last week.
The tips are very narrow on this one and the widest point at the fades is only 1 3/8".
Pretty simple design really, the hardest part was getting the length on the Osage correct so it would fit on the Walnut properly.
Bert.

Here's a link to some pics of one I did for my wife.  Very mild recurve.  You could go much further with it if desired.

They shoot great.  Real zippy.
I took mine out of the form once in cooled.  About an hour after bending.
