I will soon be gluing up my first glass bow and would like to use a pc. of the rosewood riser to make a center overlay. It will be black glass, red phenolic, then rosewood. Can anybody tell me if I should use clear glass over top of all that?
Thanks
Nope, don't need any clear glass over it.
Be sure to show us some pics when you get it done and don't hesitate to ask any questions here as you go along. Lots of good advice here from people much more experienced than me.
I did the same thing last month(with white glass in place of red) you may have to seal the rosewood with super glue before applying finish, I did since I used Spar Urethane for finish. I used Honduran Rosewood..
Just curious, why would you have to seal rosewood before finishing. I'm building a takedown recurve using bolivian rosewood, I've never used it before???? Thanks Tony
the oils in the rosewood will not let the spar urethane dry, same when using cocobolo. I used 025 cocobolo veneers in my first bow and did not seal the limb edges..the limb edges stayed tacky even after 2 weeks so I had to sand them down, seal with thin super glue and refinish, no problems after that, finish dried quickly. I am using Minwax Spar Urethane Satin for my finish. If you do some research you will find a finish that may not need the sealing.
I've been using wipe-on poly?
