Title: Dry'n Exotic Woods???
Post by: cobbow on April 28, 2010, 11:13:00 AM
I was just looking on Bell Forest at some of exotic wood blanks that they have.

Some of blocks are not dried. My question is what is the easyest way to dry them to a workable moister content?

I was thinking about putting it in the fridge or the attic, but didnt know if the temp would affect the wood. Or whitch is faster.

If that is not a good idea how long do you think it would take to dry on its own?

The piece I am looing at is 1 1/2"x 1 1/2" and any where from 6" to 36".

Thanks for the Help

you need to find out the moisture content in the wood first in order to judge how much longer it will need to dry. I am no expert, but I once read that freshly cut wood can take about a year per inch in thickness to air dry. If you put it in your attic, it could get too hot and warp or get internal damage like checkering, but then again it could be a pretty good "kiln" depending on where you live. I honestly don't know about the fridge idea and once again, I am no expert by a long shot. Hopefully someone with some better advice can chime in soon for ya.
