Title: Turkey Box Call
Post by: Tyler Langston on April 21, 2010, 10:24:00 PM
Since I have made my own bow I am wanting to make my own turkey box call so I can hunt all traditional next weekend. So what kind of wood do I need to make a good sounding box call?

I started out my call making from Custom sawing. Moved on to solid body hand hewn box calls and other types as well. It's as addictive as bow building for sure.

Guess one of these days I'll have to do a build along on box calls. and other type calls as well.

Listen to Kris.  Way too addictive!

I also started with Custom sawing kits and moved on from there.

Are there certain woods that are better for making calls with?  I've always heard that cedar was preferred, but I notice hickory and cherry both being used.

PastorHunter, about the best boxcall wood is Butternut with a cedar lid IMO. there are some fine turkey call making woods out there, about the only I can say is stay away from the oily stuff like some of the exotics but there are exotics that make great calls. mahogany makes a great call as well as canary wood.

I got away from the exotics in box calls and stick with indigenous woods to the U.S. just because of box call history and such.
