Title: Progress with Pics
Post by: gudspelr on April 19, 2010, 02:24:00 AM
Well, I got over to my friend's place today and got the last of the bandsawing done on my R/D Longbow.  Because I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to using power sanders with care (yes, there's a story behind that), I decided to go the rest of the way on the limbs by hand.  Here are some before sanding pics.

Limbs marked-masking tape on both sides still

Rough cut sight window/arrow shelf

After some progress with sandpaper and a chunk o 2x4

After I got both limbs down to the lines (yes, it took a while), I went for the riser area.  I'm waiting for a riser overlay in the mail, but couldn't wait to get going, so I started forming the belly side a bit with the sandpaper and a 4 in 1.

On this one, if you look real close on the left side by the fiberglass and lamination, you can see a little dark line.  That's where my pressure block broke during glue up and left me with a void...not so good...

Oh, and any thoughts here?  What do you guys use to radius your arrow shelf real nice?

A few things learned on this...respirator is good, no gloves is bad.  That equals slivers I can feel but can't see   :knothead:     Guess 50% isn't that bad?  Also, PLEASE feel free to give advice/thoughts on anything you see.  This is my first bow and I'm more than willing to take all the constructive criticism you all can give me.

Have a great week.

Jeremy

i radius my arrow shelfs with my rattail file or my 4 way rasp/ file. you could also use a sanding block with some rough grit sandpaper after you have most of it cut. Glad to see your bow is coming along well.

you might be able to pull the glass splinters out with duct tape, I had to pull a couple out last week...I have heard of guys using panty hose to pull glass splinters out. I have been using the metal pressure strips from Bingham Projects, I wax both sides of strip before glue up.
