I have quite a bit of finish work to do on this one yet, but I had to post some pics. I glued this up on sunday night on the 50" recurve form I made. This time, I used a .001 tapered lam and a parallel. I also cut it to 51". For all those whom I sent the plans for this form to, I used a total butt thickness of .185 (thats a .37 lam, a .68 tapered lam and .040 UL glass).
The bow came out lighter than intended, I expect it to finish at about 40-43#@ 28" but it shoots very well and I think this is the formula to use on this form.
I used a cocobolo riser, with a 1/4" thick piece of linen phenolic and white glass in the middle. I ground these birdseye maple lams and have white and brown glass overlays.
I put a thick coat of sealer on it so its a bit of a mess right now, but the I think the contrast between the materials really looks nice.

Looks pretty good, but the contact point on the shelf is a bit forward. It should look real nice when it's all finished up.
Man, I love those color contrasts! Two of my absolute favorite woods. You build a beautiful bow! Great talent...can't wait to see some finished pics.

I am usign some of Thunderbird Archery's "High Solids Vynl Sealer". It goes on thick and sands beautifully. I have used superglue in the past, but I am trying all sealer this time.

Thanks guys...heres a few more pics after I sanded that sealer off. I struggled with finding a good sealer for a long time..tried a bunch of different things, but I do indeed like this product as it sands so nicely.

Its in the final stages of finishing now...probably will only turn out to be 39# or so @ 28"...but all of the colors and the contrasts between dark and light wood really look good I think. Man I love this cocobolo.

Nice work, I love that coco too.Are you spraying
Tbird satin epoxy. The first batch I got was almost semigloss and this new batch is really flat.Thought
I might have did something wrong. Bill
Yes I am spraying it Bill. Here is my long finishing process currently. Im not sure how to do it better or faster, but any advice from anyone would be appreciated:
1. Finish sand
2. Seal the open grain riser woods with super glue and sand
3. Seal the whole riser with High Solids Vinyl sealer, sand
4. Wipe on or spray on the first cost of TB -Gloss, buff with steel wool
5. Notice the open grain that still isnt filled, so I fill it with TB gloss with my finger, sand lightly...then generally do this step 2 more times.
6. Spray on a light coat of TB gloss, buff with steel wool....do this about 3 times
7. Frost the last coat fo Tb gloss, which makes it almost appear satin.
Job well done man...she looks sharp.
Gorgeous, Brad.
Very Nice like the thumb locator
Did you already shoot her ? Bet she's fast as lightning and with that heavy riser I'm sure the bow is very stable and dead quiet.

Andy
Yes, it does shoot well. It likes about an 8 inch brace height and it is certainly dead in the hand. As for noise, at the 8" brace height and with some sort of string silencers it is fine...without the silencers it is a little noisy. These little 50" bows are fun to shoot!
