I'll start this off with a few pics of the stave I chose for my trade bow. As you can see it is osage and with a few challenges. Almost 90deg of twist from end to end, a few knots and it's been so long since I've done this I can't find my good draw knife. This stave does have relatively good rings and is well seasoned.
Here are the pics...

Looks like a challenging piece there Pat. Go easy on that back of your's !
John, it is a challenging piece but very doable. If it weren't for pieces like this I would have never had osage to play with. There is no such thing as bad osage!!!
My back is doing a lot better. At least now I can hold up a draw knife. A few weeks ago that would have been a real challenge.
That looks like a piece of cake for you, I know it will be something the person getting it will be very proud of.
Ok heres what I am going to start with I sure hope it comes out well.
Honduran cocobolo with a cherry bloodwood and Paduk riser.

shawn, i assume it will have clear glass. either way that joker aught to be sweet. can't wait to see some progress.
pat, it looks like your gonna have lots of fun.
Looking goo fellers
Looks like a good start I just came from the garage looking at what I had and I think I might cut another tree this weekend. I'd like to build a nice character bow. Got some good ones for it but I'm Looking for that special one. I might even make it a TD.
Shawn those veneers are awesome! Now that fine riser block sure does look like Sappelle, Padauk and Purpleheart though..ha ha
This is going to be an Osage self bow. It has very thin rings so I'm going to back it with rawhide. Here is the first pics.
Iam getting started . Going to use Brazilan Cherry (Jatoba) for main lamination , raw boo for backing, and trying to decide what to use for riser and power stripe.
I got it down to one ring but I don't trust it so I will put raw hide on it.
Ranger, I normally put a drop of super glue on any knots on the back just for insurance and rawhide backing when I have issues with the stave. Neither will affect the bow's performance but will help boost your confidence.
Looks like you did a good job around the knots.
here is the stave I have picked out. There are a few tough pin clusters but I'm not worried. Rings are solid and about 3/16 thick. I was saving this piece for ojam for a bow for myself, but I think it would be a better gift.
this is a look down the length. I will work it rough it out next week after I split all the stuff I get this weekend. I will bring it to ojam if anyone else is going.
I have mine started as well, can't find the camera right now but promise to get pic's up asap.
Bamboo Backed Jatoba with an Osage overlay on the belly to beef the handle up a little.
:campfire:
Shoot, i couldn't be out done (or out started) by you boys. I glued up a couple of simple risers. zebra/purpleheart. first time using purpleheart. i always stayed away from it becuase everyone said it dulls your tools. we'll see. Hope no one at PA sees me using fiberglass (hee hee). Patb don't tell on me!!
Looking good sulphur.
I'll try and get some pics up on Monday.
I'm working on a White Ash stave.
Fun to see the bows starting to take shape !
Sulphur, you'r secrets safe !
John K
Looking awsome guys,
I think i finally got time to dig out a stave. I got one or two worked down to growth ring but I wanna see if I can dig up a real special one.
If I get it chased down today I'll post some pics.
Everyones is looking great so far. Gonna be some sweet bows built for sure. Thanks to everyone who signed up and is participating.
Kris
Alright I pick one out and took it down to a ring. Pretty good looking stave and plum full of pin knots. Ought to make a good one. Got some natural reflex in it and a little twist but the twist can be heated out of it.
Heres a few pics

Added a couple more pics. I put it on the form and induced a little more reflex to it.
After that I applied some TB 111 to the back and let it set over night. Then applied raw hide backing.

Not a whole lot to show right now, just a chunk of Brazilian Cherry, some maple accents and a bunch of ideas. Eventually, this will be a 3-piece take-down longbow with cherry limbs under clear glass.
Stickbowcrafter, that looks like a bow any of us would be very happy to get.
I just recieved an Osage slat/board as part of a trade and am making plans to turn it into something purdy for this shindig. Will post its dimentions and solicite advice for design, maybe in its own thread.
I was gonna do my swap bow from whiteoak. As it turned out when I took the staves down from the barn rafters they were infested with beetles. Using an osage stave instead. Osage is always an excellant second choice. Got a little crook and twist in it but I think I can heat em out. Here's a couple pics of my progress so far.

Wow...some great work guys...The gentlemen receiving these bows are going to be lucky!
Here are a few more shots of the stave I'm working on. I'm down to heartwood for the back but will probably go at least one more ring before I'm done. I have reduced the length to 66"t/t but will probably go down to 64"t/t. After that I marked the center of the stave, tip to tip, and from there went out 2" each side for the handle and another 1 1/2" for each fade. This will be a symmetrical bow. From there I mark every 6" from the center out each limb. With these marks I'll set up the limb widths.
To mark the center line down the stave I did some manipulation to Eric's gizmo. I'll do another thread about this manipulation and tell how it works.
Here are a few pics of the stave and where I am now...

You have some nice rings on that one. Watching and learning
I laid out my bow yesterday. I don't use any do it quit like pat but the results are the same I guess. I try to pick out a vertical line of grain and then follow it down the ceenter of the piece. I can be pretty acurate this way. It definitely comes in handy when doing a sharp snake like this one. This pic is of the top limb.[IMG]
the bow will be 64ntn with a four inch handle and 1½in fades with working limbs that are 28½in long. I'm going to start with the limbs @ 1½in wide and tapering to 1¼ for the first 12in then taper the last 16in from 1¼ down to about ½in or slightly less.
I have the stave reduced to the initial width. Even though I use a straight edge to make off the width between the 6" marks down the stave I came back and hand drew around any knots that might be close to the edge to give them a bit more meat.
After removing wood along the edges with a rasp, following the new lines around the knots I came back and remover the back ring. I wasn't satisfied with the one before. Even though this stave is probably 10 years old and has been in my basement wood stack I noticed a few checks showing up from the knots when I brought it into the heated house so after I got to the new back ring I sealed the entire back and ends with spray shellac. I usually do this anyway, no matter how old or young a stave. It is just good, cheap insurance.
This is where I stand now. Basic shape and width, basic length and the back is sealed and the stave is ready to have the belly reduced to the floor tiller stage. I will keep the handle area and tips wide in case I need to make adjustments to get the string to track properly down the bow.
Once I get this stave to floor tiller I will begin with the straightening, reflexing and possible tempering of the stave.
nice pictures pat. Looks like you are glad to be back in the bow shop!
I am very glad to be back in y shop. I forgot how much I missed working on bows...and it's all coming back to me! d;^)
Glad to see you back at it Pat. Hopefully I will be able to soon also.
Cut some antler today for the tips and arrow pass and started tillering. Got it to 20" with a brace height of 4" left is 1 1/2" longer
(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm216/ranger500us/IMG_0293.jpg)
Looks like it needs to be bending a lot more near the handle.
Made a little more progress. Got it laid out and started reducing it down to rough size. Gonna be 64 t/t. Laid it out with a 4" handle and 1 1/2 fades 1 1/2" each side the handle. It's gonna taper to 1 3/8" to mid limb and then down to a little more than 1/2" (for now) at the tip. Gotta work arond a small knot on one limb but hopefully that won't be a problem. I left a little extra around the knot. Here's a few pics
the layout

Thanks razorback, it is only at 20 in"s that's what I will be working on.
boy oh boy! love them osage staves.
Looking great fella's.
I'm gonna work on mine a little this weekend.
Looking great fellas!I cant wait to get started my self!
Ranger 3: You've been busy! Got a head start on me, that's for sure. Couple of things I noticed:
1) You've got a hinge waiting to happen on the left limb in the picture right at the knot on the side of the limb. Also, right limb is bending a little too much in relation to the rest of the limb in the same region.
2) Get a lot more of those limbs bending in the inner thirds near the fades. Don't pull it past your draw weight and/or beyond where the tiller starts to suffer or you'll get undue set (or worse).
Just my two cents worth. Keep the shavings flyin'!
Looking good gentlemen. The lady has a couple of immediate opptions that I'm trying to decide on. A pignut hickory self bow that is at the floor tillering stage that has been heat tempered but has a propellor twist. Or a bamboo backed osage bow already glued up and shaped with a little reflex.
I think I will try to finish them both and see which one ends up best.
The hickory stave got its twist from being rough out while still green. I tried to use a heat gun to get the twist out last summer with out success. Any suggestions?
Bona, you can tiller the twist out or if not too much just work with it.
maybe steam it?
maybe steam it?
I love those osage staves you have here guys. Some nice twist and knots in it. I bet the fellows that are gonna get them will be very happy.

Andy
I bet they will Swissbow. Glad you like 'em ;)
Here's the stave I'm starting with. Got a little bend to it eh?
Rings are sketchy up top but nice in the center.
(http://sticknstring.webs.com/photos/tdt14.JPG) (http://sticknstring.webs.com/photos/tdt13.JPG)
Got a knot a little off center.
First step is to use the bandsaw to get closer to the good rings. Gonna have to leave some of the thickness in the handle though.
Next up, chasing a ring. This is Emily, my 14 year old daughter helping out. She's a natural at this. She needs some shop fashion help though. She first walked out in a faux fur coat and those dangly earrings.
Here's the ramp up to the extra thickness on the top of the handle with the knot and its relation to center. It'll be in one of the fades but in a non-bending part of the bow.
Here it is with the ring all chased out and limbs thinned enough to heatbend.
Here it is clamped upside down in my caul before heat.
And then after.
Added a bit of reflex.
And corrected most of the side-to-side. Notice the bulge in the handle and the ring I chose.
Here's the remaining part of that knot. It'll be just a dark spot when I do the final shaping on the handle.
Nice John. It's good to have shop help too.
I never even thought about that on a handle John, Thanks for the tip.
Neat handle idea John!
I have done as John did by leaving a ring or two on the back of the handle to fill it out and it worked well. Be sure your bow doesn't bend in the handle if you do this because these layers can pop off. I had it happen on a bow and fortunately caught it in time before more damage was done. I removed the delaminating layers from the handle and added leather for the same purpose, to fill out the back of the handle.
All those bows so far are lookin really nice. I just got mine started and planned out today. Its gonna be a hickory backed ipe R/D with a hickory powerlam, curly maple and purple heart riser, and purple heart tips. the ipe-hickory-purple heart contrast looks really nice on my other bows ive made. will post some pics soon.
Guys, I am planning on using a 1/4 sawn osage slat. Should I chase rings to get the side profile or just cut the shape out using the best area of the wood. I will back it with bamboo and add a piece of osage for the handle. Also how thick should the osage be. The slat is 1 3/4" wide and 11/16" thick.
Razor, you could reduce the width to 1 1/4" to
1 3/8". I'd leave the thickness as is and pre tiller the osage slat so you get a smooth even bend with 4" to 6" of tip movement in both limbs then glue it up in about 3" of Perry reflex.
62" to 66" for a 28" draw.
Thanks Pat. Thats kind of what I was thinking. How would 1 3/8" width for 16-18" tapered to 1/2-3/8" nocks work, or should I leave it full width and just tiller to get smooth bend.
I would take it to 1 3/8" for 6" to 8" then a straight taper to 1/2" tips and reduce the tips to 3/8" or less later. Also give it a slightly radiused belly too.
I agree.
Way to go Emily!!! Looks very good :clapper: :clapper:
Thanks John and Pat. Will get started on this one this weekend.
...a little further along in the process. I got the stave to floor tiller stage and now it's time to put some heat to it to remove the twists, straighten out the limb and add some backset.
I start by clamping the stave handle to the form. There is some deflex right at the fade I want to reduce.
and a little twist just beyond
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/TGbowtrade026.jpg)
I start by oiling the wood well with veg oil. I will concentrate the heat near the fade. This area is thicker so it will take longer for the heat to sink in. After an initial heating I wrap the heated area in alum foil to hold the heat while it sinks in. I then reheat and begin clamping, slowly with repeated heatings until I'm satisfied. I know it wouldn't go all the way down so I didn't force it.
Now it's time to work on the twists. For this I use wedges along with the clamps to direct the twist the other way
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/TGbowtrade032.jpg)
you can see the clamps where they need to be to correct the twist and a wedge to assist.
This is what the limb looked like to start with. You can see where I oiled the limb near the fade area.
I'll post pics of the results tomorrow when it comes out of the clamps.
This is a view of the other limb before any manipulation. It has a nice twist also. This limb also has some pronounced knots on the back that will have to be dealt with as I clamp and heat it. More wedges and a few spacers along with the clamps will help with this limb.
Looks good Pat
Great job there Pat. Just looking at the profile, what poundage bow are you making from this stave?
Charlie, I'm shooting for 50# to 60#.
Looks Great Pat!
That looks absolutely fantastic Pat. I'm not that much into selfbows but if I see what you guys are doing here I might get the drawknife out and let some shavings fly.
This site truly is an source of inspiration for me. I'm glad I found it :-D
----------
Andy
Got my bow finished today. When do we ship these out? Im going to have to ship it soon, because it is wanting me to shoot it. Ill post some pics today. Mark
I took the clamps off this morning. Here is what the first limb looks like. I will have more straightening to do as I go along but am pleased with the results of the first straightening session.
Now, the second limb is clamped to the form. You can see the deflex and twists. Not as bad as the first but with different issues. This limb has pronounced knots on the back so spacers and wedges are needed to control the direction and still prevent damage to these knots.
And here it is heated and clamped the form. I worked on this early enough today and my basement is cool enough that I will remove the clamps later this afternoon.

Pat you are the man!
Mater..
You didn't waste anytime did you? Bows Can be shipped whenever they just need to be completed by the deadline and shipped.

It only takes a couple days to spit 0ut a laminated bow. Ive worked alot of overtime, but just couldnt wait to get this out. (http://i1003.photobucket.com/albums/af158/markas4259/100_1353.jpg)

Very nice mater. You can ship it... d;-D

Andy
That is a beautiful bow, Mater. I like the way you brought the back and belly lams around the riser. Very cool!
That is a very nice bow mater! It looks like cedar or yew. What ever you used, it is a beautiful combination! Nice job!
great lookin bow mater.
I agree, Very nice job. Wish I would of drawn your name LOL
What kind of wood is it? looks great.
yew limbs actionboo core and canarywood and bermese ebony riser. I hated to give it away, it fit me like a glove. But I got it sent out today to someone.?????
Awsome ! I'm sitting here just smiling thinking about the look on the guys face when that baby shows up.
:bigsmyl:
Oh boy thats exciting..and what a nice bow. Excellent job Mater!
Nice job Mater, it's a beauty.
Great looking bow Mater!
The second limb came off of the form this afternoon. Quite a change from beginning to now. Here are a few more pics. You will notice the knots on the back of this limb I had to deal with and protect as I heated and clamped the limb.

As you can see from the last pic there is still a bit of prop twist but I will deal with that later if necessary.
Pat that is gonna be one sweet character bow.
Ya gotta love those knots sticking out there! Those got to be hard to work around.
Here is my trade bow. I still have about 3 in"s to go and then a lot of sanding. The left limb is the top limb and 1 1/2 longer.
I think you should only work the inner limbs to get those last three inches. It seems way stiff right outside the handle on both limbs.
Ranger that's come along way since your last pics.
Looks great!
Watch your Eye man, I seen your post and that puts a whole nem twist into the term "blood, sweat and tears" I would have all three in the bow at one time right there.
Kris
I agree with soopernate. Work the inner third 20 scrapes on the lower limb; 10 on the upper. Mostof your bend on the lower limb is in the middle third.
I spent a little time in the ship tonight and roughed the stave down to a close profile. I have some snake and fairly clean stave so I am going to make a new caul for this bow. I will post some pics of the caul tomorrow. Here are a few pics of tonight. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0067.jpg)
I am taking off two thin growth rings that were left on this stave when I put it up to dry. I was getting some really nice shavings with my cabinet scraper.
that's all for tonight. So far, everything is going well.
Those bows are looking good. I'd like to get in on this next time.
Ok. While I am waiting on a piece of bamboo, I have added an 8" handle piece to the Osage. The handle piece and slat are both about 11/16th thick. My concern is when I do the fades I might end up with the handle piece being in the working part of the bow and popping off, what do you all think.
My plan is to mark the edge of the slat at 1/4" from back and cut a facet from the center of the belly to the line. The limbs are 1 1/2 wide out to 8" from fade then taper to 1/2" tips. Would then scrape center to get the slat bending evenly before adding the bamboo. Do these numbers sound good or am I being too agressive for 50-55#. Bow is 64" ttt
OK here is few pics of my trade bow (that is if things hold together and make it)...
Here is one limb on the form ( the other limb had natual reflex that pretty much matched my form
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/longbowhntr/103_0067.jpg)
Here it is right off the form with just under 3" of reflex (Thanks Pat for the alum. foil trick I hadn't thought about doing that and it seemed to work well along with the Brad Merkel trick of using grape seed oil)
This is the back of the bow before heating and getting tips to line up
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/longbowhntr/103_0059.jpg)
Sorry should have rotated that last pic.
It will probably be a week or so before working on it any more. Will be hanging out at OJAM for a few days so we will see how it goes.
Looking forward to seeing everone again and meeting some new folks also.
David
I will have mine at ojam as well dave. They both look similar too.
Hey David your right they do look alot alike. Maybe we can meet up at ojam I sure would like to get a close up look of your bow.
Got started! Down to one ring, slightly snakey on upper limb, and 1" of natural relex.

Doesn't have anything to do with the bow build, but I had to take a break so my brother and I went looking for sheds. A little upset about finding the big set with the skull attached.
Tony, will you post pics. If your belly slat is 11/16" thick you should be good. You could also add a power lam under the boo at the handle to be sure it doesn't bend or saw your riser block into thin slats of graduating lengths. If the handle area bends a little this type of riser will give a little without popping off.
All these osage bow staves are getting me excited. The more character the better as far as I'm concerned.
Pat, I glued the handle on with TB III. Not crazy about the glue line so I may take it off and laminate some pieces of mixed species on for improved strength and looks. Does TB III give with heat? and what size shape would you do for a power lam under the bamboo. Will get some pictures done and added soon.
TBIII glue will release at 150deg(F). Heat up the riser and use a chisel to pry it up after it is hot enough.
I have never used a power lam so someone else will have to help you with that.
Razorback,
You Might want to check out a few of Nick's (dutchwarbow) builds. He does alot of the laminate bows.
Got my trade bow to full draw. The stave had a pretty bad twist right in the handle area. To be honest it was a little beyond my experience. I have another one that is roughed out that was a lot straighter. I may finish it and send it out instead of this one. Here's a pic. Deffinitely nothing to be showing off. It appears to have a hinge started in the top limb near the fade. This seems to be an optical illusion as it doesn't look that way from the other side.
This thread brings back some really good memories. Thanks for sharing folks!! I'm impressed with what I've seen here.
God bless,Mudd
kodiakkid, I'd say you did a fine job with a challenging piece. You might try to get the midlimbs bending a tad more.
Doesn't look bad at all to me kodiakid! I thought I saw what John saw and he confirmed it. What poundage is it pulling?
Put my trade bow in the mail today. If you get this bow I hope you like it.
Thought we were to wait until July 4th to ship? Maybe that was the deadline?
Is it coming to Ohio?
Thanks for the compliments guys. It's pulling 52 lbs. right now. I was shootin for 50-55 lbs. I may work on the mid limbs a bit and then shorten it a couple inches to stay close in poundage. Paul
Sorry but it's not for you Joe. Kris said we can ship anytime, tha dead line is July 4th.
well, I said I was going to wait until ojam, but I just can't. I have it pulling sixty pounds on the tree with with the boots. I am switching to the short string now and will continue toadjust the tiller and slowly bring up the draw and lower the weight. I decided not to put this one on the caul because it had some natural reflex and honestly, it has been awhile since I didn't have to heat one so I didn't. It seems to be coming along ok. I might have a slight hinge right out of the lower limb past the fade, but it is still early.
longbowhunter, I will just look for the guy with my stave and I will know it is you. See you in a few days.
I think it's time for a short string.
yeah, I'm at sixty 60@10 so it is time. I will start with a five in brace height and just excersise the heck out of it and take it slow. I have until July. :-)
Yestertady made up the pieces for riser, tapered the lamination thined and cut out the Bamboo , and made up the power strip.Just finished glueing everthing up. Tommorrow I will work on riser.

Looking good everyone, mines coming along slowly !
Went back and worked on the tiller a little more. May not look all that great but shoots pretty good. Lost a few pounds so I shortened it a couple inches. In the process of flipping the tips now. Last one is cooling down as I post this. Here are a few more pics

Looks Great Brother!!
Looking good Kodiak!
Love the handle area on that baby :clapper:
Well fellas what do you think? This was my first attempt at an osage bow.The stave was narrow and twisted to start with.No matter which way i turned it the handle and the tips would not even come close to fitting on the cull at the same time. But i wanted to build something unique/with character for the trade. With alot of heat, clamps, and wedges I finally got the string to cross center of the handle.Sorry you may not be able to see the snakes and bends on the pics.Took pics with cell phone.oh ya thats my first string too(the one with the silencers). It took me the took biggest part of the afternoon to figure that out.Not to pat my self on the back but it looks as good as any string ive bought, better than some. The string makes me as happy as any part of the project.I was shooting for 66.5"long 50#@28.It came out 66.5" long 45#@28.Thats my Dad shooting in the pics.He says it shoots where you look.Arrows touching all most everyime at 15-20 yards(about 250-300 arrows through it so far)He says its soft in the hand also.(I was worried about hand shock due to the ornate upper limb tip)It shows no sign of stress and it took next to no set when unstrung i feel bad missing the weight I was very carefull.Do you guys think it looks fit for the trade.I feel bad sence the person requested 50#@28".But this is such a neet bow i would like to give it to the pearson i built it for.If not ill try another closer to july.due to unfortinate events I can not build or shoot for quite a while.I thought about sendig this one with a promise of a sending another latter 50#@28" in the year when i am again able to build and shoot and have a little more osage building expirence.and sorry for the long winded post. Oh ya the bottom limb is 2" shorter than the top per Dean T's recommendations. Thanks Scott
Good looking bow! Maybe I can shoot one of yours someday.
God bless, Mudd
Any time Mudd!
Looks good to me. If the person you built it for don't want it tell em to send it to me. :D
I think any body ought to be happy just ot get a bow that sweet! I can always live with 5 pounds either way.
Kris
Cool bows guys. I will be back at it this weekend.
I have mine all finished up, the finish is curing on it right now and I think I will get it wrapped up and shipped this weekend. It's a long one..69" and I hope the new owner likes it. The riser wood was given to me by the gentleman who taught me alot about making bows...I think it is Shedua, The back is Bingham's carbon fiber and I used whitetail antler for the tips. I also experimented a bit using core-tuff glass right underneath the back and belly laminates which I think looks kind of cool. Hope you enjoy it Mr. ___________.

Kris
Waddayouguys mean your shippin' I thought we were shippin' the first week in July?????
Bert. :o
I was thinking July was our deadline..but if they are done earlier ship them. I thought this was mentioned on this thread or the initial sign up thread... Did I blow it?
I plan on shipping tomorrow. Is this wrong?I understood that july 4th was the deadline but you could ship earlier if you wanted.
ship when you are done. Nice bow scott.
sorry to hear of your explosion. It was looking good.
i feel your pain Trad. had a few problems of my own.

It has some deflex in one limb. Im gonna have to throw it on the form to get that out and pull one tip to the side just a little and I might as well add some reflex while I am at it.
Thanks
Boswell
Nice job following the grain Boswell!Cant wait to see how it comes out!
very nice choice for the trade
Boswell that is gonna make a fine bow for sure, Love them snakey staves.
Shipped my trade bow out this morning!Watch the mail!
Well, since I received my bow already from Brad, I figured I had better get a move on with building my trade bow. Here's a few pictures of the process. My brother-in-law (the one in the picture) and I cut and split this osage log about a few springs ago:
It yielded a nice little stash of staves:
Here's the one I selected for the trade. I can heat that bend out with no trouble.
Reduced it to a rough 2" width with my hatchet:
Here it is after rough-profiling it. Limbs (especially tips) are left wide at this point:
Making a nice pile of kindling!
Here is after another round of shaping, both from the front profile and side:
After a little heat, I got it straightened out pretty well. I'll touch it up later as needed. Don't have any pictures of the first tiller check yet, but it drew very nicely on the long string. I've got to put some reflex in the limbs and flip the tips. I don't know if I'll use heat on the tips or use the splined technique.
All for now!
Looking good 4est!
Your making quick work of that 4est and its looking great.
After all the cool bows you guys already have made for the trade I had to start as well. So here I go ! Today I started with glueing up the riser piece. It's made of walnut and I added a thin accent strip of red phenol between two stripes of osage.
Here I have everything ready for glue up...
...and here it's glued up and between the clamps...
Tomorrow I will continue with the riser and prepare the lams and the glass for the glue up.
----------
Andy
Ok, I did some more work on the bow today. With my template I draw the outline of the riser...
...cut it out and started sanding the radius until it fits to the bow form. Against the light I check if the riser fits...
With a pen I mark the spots where I have to remove some more wood...
Then I sand, check again and so on until I'm satisfied and the riser fits perfect. The next step consists of sanding the fades on the riser. Here the lams, the glass and the riser are ready for glue up.
Can't wait to see the osage lams under clear glass. I bet they look killer.
----------
Andy
Thats osage is going to look great under the glass Andy.
Oh yea! OSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Took it of the form today and cleaned off the excess glue.

WOW, Trux that's a real beauty. I love the overlay with the finger grooves. AWESOME !

Andy
Ok, I cut and sanded the outline of the limbs and filed the string grooves. Cut out the arrow rest and started to shape the grip...

Andy
Trux.... That turned out awsome!
Swiss... Your bow is looking great as well!
I'm glad I put this together for sure, looks to become a yearly event. I'm just excited for everybody that's getting a new bow and building a bow and having a piece of the Gang.
Kris
Trux awsome job! Swiss looking great!
Boy OH boy there are gonna be lots of happy recipients for sure. Beautiful work by everyone.
I have been a bit slow lately. Hopefully I'll get some more work on my trade bow this weekend.
Kris, I'm glad you started this also. Sharing with others what we love is a special treat. It brings out the best in all of us.
Sorry guys,
no pic's my camera packed it in, but I am just putting on the last few coats of Tru-Oil.
It is a Bamboo Backed Osage with some good old Alberta Bison tip overlays, looking not to bad if I may say so myself.
I really enjoyed doing this, thanks to all of you.
Regards.
Bert. :campfire:
Osagetree, looks like you missed on another beauty. Swissbows is another righty. Someone out there will have a nice one for you.
I am ready to get ack to work on mine. had a few household chores that needed taking care of. I have my slat of osage smoothed down to 5/8" and a 10" handle block that is also 5/8" thick. I still need to thin the bamboo and work out the glue up.
Should I cut the bamboo to profile before thining or thin the whole piece and then cut to shape.
With 1/8" bamboo backing, how thick is the osage likely to end up. Trying to deside if the handle piece is enough or if I need to add something to it.
Joe,
I see you admiring these bows and wishing, LOL
Trust me you will be very happy with who is making your bow.
Sorry that's all I can say about it. :bigsmyl:
Oh boy...I came home from work today and saw the note that I missed the post office and that they have an insured package for me. It can only be one thing, and that is a fine bow from one of you guys.......but the only thing is I cant get back to see what I got until this weekend....talk about anxiety.
Got it today. A beautifully crafted 48# at 28" longbow from Trux Turning. What a beauty!...I can't thank you enough Trux. The bow looks amazing and it shoots excellent. You do some fine work!
:clapper:
Right on!
I'm on vacation this week and if all goes well I'll have my bird and be able to get back to work on my trade bow.
The allure of the wild gobbler has got it's hooks in me so I got to amswer the call to that until I tag out.
I am gonna cut a couple nice hickory trees on monday though.
I got a bow from Sharppoint yesturday. its been raining so i have shot it a lot. Its super nice though. black back glass & flat grained red elm on the belly and jatoba riser with maple accents. My dsl is crawling super slow right now or i would give a proper picture of it. it literally took 5 minutes for this page to load. I will post it asap.
cut a couple staves for me Kris!!
I got a package in the mail today and Was like a kid in a candy store. I anxiously looked at the label and it came from KennyM. I tore into it and found the bow materials for my next bow. Kenny the curls look stunning.
Hopefully I'll get my swap bow soon...
Shawn
Need to get some updates on progress guys. I've had a few PMs asking what is going on.
The deadline is the week of July 4th.
I'm sure everybody has had stuff going on and we still have plenty of time but we need some updates.
I got my turkey, so after the bow I go gonna work on it a little bit this weekend.
I am working on mine. I'm waiting to post pix when I have a little more to show.
It is 69" BBO with layers of zebra, osage, b.walnut and then another layer of osage in the handle. It will have elk antler tip overlays.
I am shaping up the bow now and will start tillering after it has been in the hot box for a few days. It has been laying out for a few weeks and I want to be sure it hasn't picked up much moisture.
I'm a little anxious also, but we have over two more months!
P.S. I love the new gremlins! :archer2:
I have been given extra duties at work, then May 7th on a canoe/camp trip for two weeks and then I'll finish mine and have it out before the 7/4 deadline. Posting pics when complete so there all together.....
Working on my BBO. Hasa cherry layer in the handle and am going to add something for the tip overlays, not sure yet, maybe osage and cherry. have to get the glue for putting the boo on but is coming together. Will post some pics once I find the camera.
I figured everybody had stuff going on. I know I do LOL
Bona your right on, Plenty of time. Just wanted to get a few updates for the anxious crowd. I know I'm a little anxious to but no need to worry till around august or so LOL. I think it will all come out smooth.
Mine is floor tillered but have been pulling overtime days and am burnt out. Home alone this weekend and lots of rain expected so looks like time in the shop.
Yes I would be panicing if it were the 24th of Aug.! ;)

And after some shaping. Now it's in the hot box.
Looks pretty good Bona
Got both limbs on mine heated and bent into shape. Now it'll sit for a week to rehydrate. Not very interesting, but it's getting done nonetheless.
I'll be shipping sometime this week.
Hope it doesn't take the ponies too long to get it to ......... hope you like it!!!!
Sorry gang no pic's for some reason the computor won't down load the pic's of my camera?????
Maybe the person who gets it will post some.
Regards.

Pretty nice looking bow Boswell. I love them snaky bows!
I have been working on mine guys. I have several pics and will try to get some posted this week.
I started two staves. You know, just in case one blows. One is black locust and the other is osage. I really hope the black locust comes in at weight.
I'll let you guys decide which one to trade.
Here's where I'm at. Tillered to 24". What do you think? I see a couple things.
Hey John,
Looks good. Both limbs look a little stiff mid limb ot the left limb especially, but right in line for 24" of draw. Is the lower limb on the left?
Sean
John if you see something you got a better eye than I do my friend and I'm sure the lack of experience on my part don't help LOL
(http://sticknstring.webs.com/photos/2010-Pictures/tdt16.jpg)
John,
What are you looking for with weight and where are you at now? I always like when you draw the lines in, great learning tool.
S
I'm looking for mid 50s at 27".
Here it is after 10 scrapes at the marked locations.
Better at the handle but midlimb on the right (upper) needs a touch.
Here it is after 10 scrapes there. Getting closer but the left midlimb needs a hair.
That's pretty good for on the tree. Drawing 55# at 26". After shooting her in and finish I should hit weight.
Here she is drawn by hand. I think she bends too much at the handle on the lower limb. Maybe not though. Whaddya think?
Here she is straight off the string. Holding pretty straight.
Looking good fellas!
She looking pretty good to me John. I do see under the handle a bit more bend. It doesn't show up on the tree. What's the length? 60"?
She's 63" total, 61-1/2" NTN. I think I'm going to shoot her a little bit tonight and then see how she feels.
John, I need to come spend some time at your place and get some learning. LOL
No seriously I do.
I haven't had much time to work on mine been turkey hunting the last week, the good thing is i got a bird !
One thing i noticed, is the guy i'm building for, i haven't seen him post since you got this going, to see who wanted in. Hmmmm.......maybe he just lurking ??
Kris, I need to spend some time at John's place too! And btw, thanks for heading up the swap and keeping things on track.
John, aka formerbutcher, I haven't seen the guy I'm building for post anything either. I keep looking for him.
Well I know these bows are not for me because I have been posting (LOL)
lol !
Putting the final finish on today . Will post pics later .
I'm in the shop every Saturday for sure for a couple hours. Southside of Indy. All relatively normal people are welcome, even you Bona :) I'm seriously pondering approaching the Woodcraft Store on the NE side about offering a selfbow class. It's basically in the parking lot of my new work location. Not great for the budget, huh?
Here are some pics of bow should be in mail today

Ahhh, ranger3! Were you in cahoots with John to drag some info out of us?! You might know it would be me to weaken!
John, does that mean I'm sub-relatively normal? I've always thought so, just need some confirmation on that. (not that funny, just wanted to use the new gremlin).
Very nice tradbower!
Here is few pics to update ya'll....
I had posted some pics earlier of a stave that I was going to use but it developed some problems so I will work on it later...
Here is try number 2...

Nice, Tradbower that is gonna be good looking character bow
Here is one more...
I have tweaked it some since that last one was taken and put some more arrows thru it and seems to be shooting pretty good. I'm going to shoot it some more before doing anything else to it. I'm right at the middle of target weight right now so we will see what happens.
Thanks for looking,David
Wow, that is awesome. Great job David!
Well it will be in the mail today. I guess I should have listed some info of bow. Its 66" 64" (NTN)52@28. Its a Boo backed , with the main lamination of Osage, and a piece of Jobota for a 2nd lam coming over fades. The tips are Argentina Osage. Its been fun doing this trade.
WHERE WILL IT BE GOING ? :archer2:
Longbow
Looks great, wish I could take a stave and do what you have done, hope its comeing my way (LOL)
Nice looking bows there guys !
Nice job Guys!
Haven't had much time to work on the trade bow since my last post until this weekend. Got the limbs shaped. Going for pyramid. Also had to spend some quality time around several pin knots.
This is by far my absolute favorite part of this bow. Snakey!
Can't work on it next weekend (mothers day with the inlaws.) But the weekend after I look to get her bending. Everyone's bows look awesome!
Looking good Tyler. I like the snakey limb also and looks like you got the tips lined up nice.
David
Looking good!
been working some crazy hours, out of town a lot for the last few weeks. I'll be working more on mine soon and be posting some pics. All work has been pretty preliminary so far, but ill get some work done this weekend and post results.
Im working on mine too. Taking my time though, I usually try to rush stuff and more often than not it costs me dearly. I'll try to post some pics in the next day or two. I have it floor tillered and need to straighten one of the limb tips but nothing major so far...... This bow building is fun stuff and addictive.
Ive seen some awesome bows. Many that I would like to see arrive at my house. Just about the time I feel like Im getting better at building bows I am humbled by the amount of talent so many of you have. Take care and good day.
Okay, I've gotten a little bit more done the last couple of weeks. I heated the limbs to profile and let them sit for about 10 days ('cause I've been either too busy or too lazy to work on it since then!) Tonight I started to work in the bow. It's a working recurve. Other than that, if I give too many specs the new owner will readily identify himself :goldtooth:
It's got a long ways to go. It's rough and ugly right now and tillered out to 25". I'll post a couple of pictures of the "before" to refresh everyone's memory. It's been fun, and I'm looking forward to finishing this one up.

Awsum job 4est!

4est
Great looking bow Wish I could do something like that! Oh by the way I just draw a little over 26 (LOL) Again great job.
Thats one cool looking bow 4est, almost done with mine.
I got a chance to work on my trade bow over the week. It is coming along well. A few troublesome spots, but I think I will still make weight. It is pulling fifty@twentysix right now. I have two inches to go but I always take the final tillering slow. I spent the day shooting it and it ainlt the fastest, but it ant that bad. I'm still a ways from complete, but I like it thus far. Not perfect tiller, but not to bad either. Here it is with a six inch brace and pulling 50@26 (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0093.jpg)
the brace pic shows the same slight hinge that you see. That is where everything else will come off and hopefully it will come out. I'm shooting for 45-55@28. It still need sanding and finish so it will be close! (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0096.jpg)
Looks pretty good DVS, I do see what you mean about the tiller but I'm sure you'll get her lined out.
Here's a couple more pics of my trade bow. It's pulling about 5 pounds over the bottom weight the recipient listed on his original post. I'd like for it to have about 4 or 5 more pounds on it, but it's shooting very well, holding shape, and bending pretty well. It's final sanded, but may need a little tiller touch up here and there so it. After that, plus some settling in, it'll be right in his ballpark.
I had to pike it 1.5" on each tip from the original pics. It's setting at 67" ntn. Just unstrung the tips show 1.5" of relfex. At rest they show 2" of relfex. Overall the bow took about 1.5" of set.
Here's the handle:
And a full draw pic. The picture is askew. It bends more in the fades than it appears.
Its bending very well, Id say.
Excellent looking bow 4est!
4est, You da man!
Looks good to me!
Nice work, 4est.
missed the draw weight, so I'm either going to have to shorten the bow and hope I can pick up enough weight that way or start over
What are the bow specs and weight now, NightHawk?
Hey guys my bow came in the mail and I gotta tell you I couldn't be more freakin pleased. I'm gonna totally step my game up for the bow i'm gonna be shipping with Tradbower's help hopefully. Here's a couple teaser pics but the link is:

Ill try to get better pics outside when the weather breaks.Jess says the riser is Honduras rose wood and yellow heart. The lams are action boo with black glass.Beautiful!Im still in shock!
Good looking bow! BW doesn't have a thing on this one from what I see.
Congratulations on your new custom bow!
God bless,Mudd
The bow Jess Stuart built for Scott M. is as well made as most custom bows I have seen. Jess; you've got some real talent and I was the test monkey. It does shoot as well as it looks. Very smooth to draw and hold with no noticeable hand shock. Great job and very generous of you. I would be proud to own a bow you made.
Bob
Glad to be hearing good reports on the out come of the trade.
I'm switching things up a little on my trade bow and going with a boo backed Jatoba with black palm accents. After working on some osage bows which I am not giving up on I think I will be able to get a better performing bow at this point in my experience by doing this.
I have mine at low brace now. Still tweaking it to eliminate some of the prop twist and line up the string.
I have started final sanding and finishing touches. I still need to put on the handle leather. It took about an onch and a half of set. It shoots pretty well. I put about 100 shots @ 26 and about fifty @ 27 and only about thirty @28. I always like to shoot at least 100 shots before I put the finish on em. I will post final pics in a week or so before I ship.
Hello gang,
well..... I shipped today, the UPS people guarantee delivery by the 21 of this month, the ponies must be tired :scared: :scared:
It's packed pretty well so keep your fingers crossed.
Regards.
Bert.
Here's try # 2. 63" tip to tip. Not sure yet but I may flip the tips a bit.
My first trade bow developed a crack running with the limb about 2" long and about 1 1/2 out of the fade. Been shootin it with no problems but couldn't send it out that way.
Got it to 55# @ 26" shootin for 55 @ 28" should be pretty close after shootin her in and final sanding
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/003.jpg)
Shot it about 30 times this evening. Has a little bit of handshock but maybe I'll lose some of it after I narrow the tips. They are still about 5/8"
kodiakkid,
If it were me, I'd get that top limb bending more from midlimb out. that's a sure source of handshock. I'm a big fan of flipped tips too. If fo no other reason than they look cool.
Dang that is just pretty cool. I don't know much about wood bows but looks like a keeper to me.
Coming along nicely. I agree with John about the top limb and flipped tips. Reducing those tips to 3/8" or less after flipping them will help reduce the shock too.
Very nice Mr Kodiak, take us along on the flipping of the tips. Please.
Have a great day.
Bert.
Looking great kodiakkid!
Put the long string on it yesterday. I've got quite a ways to go yet. 67" ntn. 1 7/8" at fades to 1/2" tips. Any input on my tiller thus far is greatly appreciated!!!
With that much bend already it is time for a low brace. Don't pull it any farther on the long string. If you try to go farther with the long string you will have problems later. The right limb looks pretty good. The left limb looks stiff at mid limb and near the fades.
Those fades are scary abrupt. They're alright for the moment, but when the near-fade wood starts to move you may run into problems. It looks like there's a pronounced taper that starts about 3"out from the point where the riser jumps in. I'd work that section into a smooth transition with the fades.
Thanks guys. Yeah I'll blend those fades in and work on that left limb a little more. If you see anything else let me know
Done some work on my bow today.
thinned the boo down and cleaned everything up in the planer.
Going for 62" boo backed jatoba. a 10" power lam 4" handle and 6-7" out to the fades. Mild reflex.
I'm getting close on my bow. Shaped the handle today, rounded all corners and worked on the bend a bit more. I'm gonna rawhide back this bow because of the crooks, twists and knots. A few timber rattler skins and bison horn overlays should set her off nicely. Haven't decided on the handle wrap yet.
After I get the rawhide down and cured I will put a hundred or so arrows through her. If everything works out well I'll get the finish on her and send her off.
Worked on the tiller a little and got it bending better. I decided to go ahead and flip the tips. I am hesitant to show pics of how I do things . If you follow me in the bow building adventure you may get led to places you don't need to go. Per Berts request though here are some pics of how I flip the tips on a bow. It worked on the first one I tried and the others as well so I haven't changed the way I do it. Ya'll gotta promise not to laugh.
My jig.
I simply put the bow behind 1 nail and in front of the piece of wood held by the other nail
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/5-4.jpg)
I heat the tip as I keep pressure on the bow. As it starts to bend I keep going till I reach the point I can insert the other nail to hold the bow in position
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/7-4.jpg)
I let the bow set till it is cool and flip it around and flip the other one
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/8-3.jpg)
Remember ya'll promised not to laugh.
looks good to me kodiak. I like to keep it simple too brother.
Brilliant!!! Simple but effective. I have just the job coming up that would benefit from a copy of your bending jig. Mind if I borrow your idea?
simple is good man, dont let anyone tell you different. as long as it gets the job done noone can give you guff about it.lol. looks good though, someones gonna be happy when they get that one.
I don't mind at all if you borrow it.
Laugh? Heck no! That's a great jig. I used to do almost the same thing when I would bend my snowshoe and landing net frames. Looking good!
I think ill give that a try on my next osage project!Ingenious plan kodiakkid!
Here is where I am at this point. If you remember, here is where she was a few months ago...

Because of the "character" of this bow I decided a rawhide backing was in order. I accomplished that today and here is where she sits now. When the rawhide is cured I'll blend it in with the rest of the bow and shoot a few volleys through her.
looks nice pat. Plenty of character for sure.
Here is the stave I started with.

Lots of heating and clamping to get where I am today...and still not out of the woods yet!
Looking good Pat. The only way it could look any better was for it to be hanging in my bow rack. Whoever gets that will be a happy camper for sure. Paul<><
looks great Pat.
I'm gonna glue mine up this week end then I'll post some pics
Got my boo tapered and done a little thickness tapering on my blank. gonna get the powerlam tapered and faded in a day or two and hopefully have this baby ready for some glue.
I planned on using TB111 for glue up does anybody see any problems with this.
Should I size the boo and blank before I glue it up. Gonna put some perry reflex in it, probably about 3" or so.
Stiks
Stiks just be sure you have good glue coverage on both glue surfaces. Wipe off as much excess as you can after glue up while the glue is still water soluble.
Sounds good Pat.
I read your reply on the othe post I posted about sanding the rind down instead of scraping. That's what I will do.
What do you do with nodes to get them worked down? how far should I take them down? Just enough to smooth the rough out?
I only remove the corky ridge at the node with light scraping along the node and try not to hit the boo surface. I prefer boo backings to look like boo backings so I generally do nothing else except remove the rind and sometimes not even that. I don't make many boo backed bows. Even though they are very cool looking, to me it is not worth the effort it takes to make one. Lately I have heard of lots of boo back failures or splinters lifting. I believe most of this is from leaving scraper marks(even minute ones) on the surface of the boo from scraping.
For my money, I'll take a good hickory backing or just a simple selfbow.
Pat B thats a very nice character bow! very nice!
I hear you Pat. I really like the looks of a boo backing. I won't be hitting with a scraper to remove the rind for sure, Just some good ol' elbow grease and some sand paper.
Pat, everytime I see your bow I think "shoot dang, wish I would of drew him" But I been thinking that about all of them LOL
Sure are some sweet bows going out, alot of variety.
A lot can happen with a character bow like this between now and time to send it off. I will start shooting it this weekend and we'll see! I've been building wood bows long enough to ever be surprised by the good stuff or the bad stuff that can happen. I'm looking forward to shooting her. The first arrow will tell me a lot.

Here is a few pics. Still have a few more coats of true oil to apply and then shoot it some more. Then do the final finish stuff and if all goes well get it shipped.
Like Pat B just said "A lot can happen with a character bow..." However this one was shot a lot before the skins were applied. We'll see what happens.
LongbowHuntr,
That is a nice looking stick right there. I know what you mean about them character bows. I jumped in head first on a few cause I wanted to build a character bow and learned real quick how to trash a stave in a hurry LOL
I swithched my trade bow to a boo backed Jatoba and will put the character bows on the back burner for a later time when I don't have a deadline, even if it is six months.
nice looking bows Gang, for sure.
Now that's a bow, longbowhunter! Well done. I love the thin copperhead skins that mold around almost anything! Looks like 2 well fed snakes. d;^)
I've just been going through this thread looking at the wonderful pictures. These bows are all fantastic. I hope I can reach this level of craftsmanship someday.
Those snake skins look great great job!!!
Longbowhunter that is one of the coolest bows i've seen. Job well done sir!
Hi longbowhntr, that's a really cool looking bow you got there. Awesome job ! It almost looks like a snake that just has swallowed it's prey.
----------
Andy
Thank ya'll for the kind words, sometimes it works out inspite of the dummy behind the draw knife.
I want to get a few more coats of tru oil and get a handle wrap put on and shoot it some more before sending it off.
Thanks again it has been fun building for the bow trade. David
need to go back to the drawing board. Built the bow but missed weight badly. whoops, I think what happened was my glass was the wrong thickness. I shortened the bow by 4 inches hoping to pick up the added weight but it's not to be.On a good note however it's one of the smoothest shock free longbows I've ever built.
I have been lazy... Again I need to sit down and finish it so I can send it out.
About a month to go guys and I need to get busy myself LOL
I added the tip overlays and leather packing for the back of the handle yesterday and worked shaping the handle and tips today then put 50 arrows through her. Shoots right where I'm looking. Will do a bit more sanding and shooting then put the skins on her.
Kris, looks like I will make the July 4th deadline if all goes well from here. Thanks for talking me into this.
Glad I talked you into it too Pat. I would say from talking to the recipient of your bow on here and watching his post he will exstatic when it shows up on his door step.
I'm gonna glue mine up today and start tillering in a few days I I should make the deadline as well.
Here are a few more pics from today. I coated the rawhide with TBIII to help prevent the moisture from the skins and glue(coming soon)from sinking into the wood and rawhide.
I put another 25 shots through her today, switching from one limb for another to determine which would be the top limb. She shoots just as well either way. She is pulling(a guess) about 50#+ @26"(my draw) but is tillered out past 28". She spits my 650gr tapered ash arrows with authority and right where I'm looking.

Nice job Pat B !
Love the profile Pat.
I appreciate your advice on all the post. I have learned so much by reading and watching. I will need your advise on the snakey stave I am working on now. I will get some pictures posted this weekend.
Okay, here's my trade bow, all finished and ready to roll! I sure like shooting this bugger. It's been a fun build and even more fun to take through the woods the last couple of days roving. Will be shipping it out this week. If not, then Tuesday of next week.
It's 68" tip to tip, 67" ntn; osage with wenge tip overlays; floppy rest; 2" of resting reflex; took about one inch of set; double stringer groove on bottom tip; finished with sealer coats of super glue, 4 coats of lacquer followed by one frost coat, then protected with two coats of Birchwood-Casey gunstock wax.

Beautiful bow 4est!
NICE !!! Pat and 4est , Great looking and sounds like, even better shooting bows.
Pete
Sweet looking bow 4est. Someone will be happy with that one also. Good job sir. David
Nice 4est. Clean simple lines and sweet profile.
Great looking bow 4est. I got that board bow pretty well done and it's been on the back burner just needs a little sanding and a finish.
Anyway onto the trade bow...
Glued it up today and waiting for it to dry I put 2.5 inches of reflex into it. It looked good on the form so I went with it, Didn't want to over do it. I'll Clean it up on the bandsaw after it dries and get a handle glued on it and get to tillering.
I tapered my Jatoba from 1/2" to 7/16" thick My boo is tapered at 3/32" to a hair under 1/32". From fades to tip it is tapered 1 3/8" to 3/8" nice gradual taper through out so I am figuring it should bend pretty good right off the form and just need some tweeking and weight reduction. We'll see. Hope to have her shooting this weekend or early next week.
I built it with the top limb 1" longer and a 4" handle out to around 7.5-8" fades and a 10.5 power lam, overall 62" tip to tip 61" NTN
It will have black palm accents in the handle and tips. and I think I am gonna go natural on the boo.
Stiks
Great looking bows everyone!
Wonderful bows gentlemen. I wish I had that ability, ordering glass and having a recipe to work from is so much easier.
Pat, your bow already looks great, but I bet with the snake skins on it this bow will be absolutely awesome.
4est, that's a sweet looking bow you got there. Nice and clean lines, saweeet !
I bet these bows will make two Trad Gang members very happy.
----------
Andy
Absolutely beautiful! That is what I want to be able to do. If I grow up to be a bowyer.
Stan
Stan,
If you hang around here long enough these guys will make a bowyer out of ya. LOL
They have all helped me alot and still do.
Well, I got my blank trimmed up today and floor tillered. Gonna throw it on the tiller tree this weekend.
Any of you guys got any advice on tillering jatoba? I've read that if not real careful it will fret so I'm gonna get it bending slow and exercise it plenty. I was thinking about it and figured since I'm building a bow with a 28" draw I will go ahead and tiller it to 29" just to be safe and hopefully keep it from fretting.
My camera is messed up or something so no pics at this point but I will remedy that in a few days.
Stiks
Shipped my bow out today on it's way to.....? Hope the recipient likes it. Thanks again, Chris, for putting this together. It's been fun. I look forward to the next one.
Sounds great 4est, I'm sure they will love it.
I'm heading off too a local rendevous today to pick up some things and I'll be widdling on mine later.
I took my trade bow to the NC Trad Bow Championships near Hickory, NC this past weekend and shot the "B" coarse with her. She shoots well(better than me!) with a bit of a thump but I will narrow the tips a bit more then get down to adding the skins and dressing her up. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to get her into the mail!
I'll post more pics when she's dressed. She is too shy to be exposed in her present condition! d;^)
Sound great Pat.
I got mine bending today about 7 or 8 inches. I guess it's time for the short string.
I'll brace it about 3" and start there. This BB Jatoba looks like it is gonna be a sweet bow. I just might suprise myself.
I built a tiller tree with the pulley on it and it's great. Also got me one of those tillering gizmos of Eric K.'s design and it has become my favorite tool in a matter of an hour or so.
I need to get my butt to taking some pics since I got my camera problem remedied. I just can't get away from scraping and bending long enough LOL.
Stiks
I put the skins on her today. These skins are a different than what I had planned and a first for me. Stay tuned for further updates. d;^)
Looking forward to the pics. Hmmmm wonder what kinda skins...
David
Come on Pat.... You got us in suspense!!!
just a tease!
:biglaugh:
I'm taking my trade bow to Cloverdale to shoot it in and pick some snakeskins out from Yancey, assuming he's there. After I put them on, it's on it's way to ???
Glad I could cheer you up, Joe. You've been down in the dumps lately.
I got my trade bow in the mail yesterday. Awesome. Thank you Ted! Unfortunately I can't shoot it yet because of thunderstorms but I can't wait.
mine received it's last coat of poly last night. I will put on a handle wrap and send her on the way. This has been great and I can't wait til the next one.
Nice!
Nice,,, Good deal! Thanks for posting!
Sweet Bow DVS.
Getting closer everyday to the deadline. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna make it.
Nice looking bow let us know how it shoots .
I started adding Tru-Oil last night so it won't be long before her debut.
haha pat that looks like either carp skins or gaboon viper from the "teaser" im guessing carp though as gaboon viper would be crazy expensive and hard to find.
Finally got some pics guys. I need some seasoned eyes to critique my tiller. I am at 55# at 28" right now. I think it looks pretty good considering this only my third bow but I"m not a seasoned vet like some of you fellers.
Lower limb is 1.5" shorter than top limb.
Braced at about 6"
Drawn to 28"
unstrung (I started out with about 3" reflex and ended up with about 1" sting follow)
Poor it on me guys
Stiks
Hmmm...it's been a week to the day that my trade bow was confirmed as delivered to its recipient and still no post from him saying he go it.
DVSHUNTER..... Sweet!!! That's one good looking bow you got in the trade. What are the specs on it?
Stiks-n-Strings ........"I need some seasoned eyes to critique my tiller."......."Poor it on me guys"
Stiks.....
I'm sure there are several folks that could help you with a critical eyed critique if they could see both limbs clearly. One limb is nicely visible, the other... not so much. IMHO
God bless,Mudd
I received my bow this week from 4est, and it shoots very nice, thanks. Haven't had much time to work on my bow lately between getting my first car and finishing up school, but I got the handle glued up and it's ready for tillering. just got to learn how to post pics now.
mudd, it is 56in and is marked 60@26 for my short draw. She shoots pretty quick.
sticks, it looks like a slight hinge about seven inches out of the right fade. I had a spot like that on my trade bow... That I still need to put some leather on and ship! But it looks good kris how was your first glue up?
Yeah Mudd I was thinking that when I put the pics up. John Scifres took care of me though and emailed some pics with thr limbs laid over each other so I know where to tweek her.
Stiks
Glad you got your bow, Bowur. Thanks for posting.
The tillering is going very well so far on my tade bow. I would like to get some pics up soon to get some feedback. It is 55# @ 15" right now. I'm shooting for 60# @ 29".
Nice looking bow pics being posted here! So, Pat, you'll be getting my bow to me soon? :)
I got the bow packed up and shipping out monday morn!
I wrote the stats on her yesterday(54#@28") and added another coat of Tru-Oil this morning. I will try to get (almost)finished pics this afternoon. I'm hoping to ship this bow out one day this coming week...I'm hoping!!!
another small hint....her name is "Flip Flop"!
Ahhhhh Pat your killing us with the hints LOL
Looking forward to seeing this one.
I took pics today but Photobucket is goofing on me so I can't get them all downloaded. I'll keep trying and post more later. Here are a few...

That's it for now. I'll get the money shots up later.
...some names were concealed to protect the innocent! d;^)
amazing bow. very cool with the 2 rests. someone is going to be very happy when that shows up on thier doorstep. im gonna have to step up and get in on the next trade i think.lol
Very Very nice Pat, is that carp skins?
Yes Ranger, grass carp skins I believe. Tim Ott sent them to me last year.
Here are the braced and full draw pics with both limbs up...

Nice bow Pat!! The skins look great. Someone will be very happy with that bow sir. David
THAT IS AWSOME!!.. I've got some big gars at my favorite fishnin spot. After seeing that, one of them is going to end up on a bow!
Oooo...I really like those carp skins. Thanks for sharing your great work, Pat. You really told that stave who was boss. I especially like the cleverly placed blade of grass!
Better late than never!
Working on Bow #2. The one on the right is a kids bow now.
Found this knot running almost the entire length of the bow. There aint no bow #3 so hopefully it goes away. I still have quite a bit more wood to remove so we'll see.
Here it is on the tree!
I just built my first tillering tree! It's portable! I just unclamp it from the bench when I'm done. I denfately like being able to step back and watch the limbs flex.
Always wanted to try antler overlays. Found this shed last after last season. Any particular glue I should use other than tight bond?
I use epoxy for antler overlays.
Pat, that is a cool bow. I'd love to get another set of those carp skins from Timo for my trade bow. But I guess that's be copying off ya :)
John
Stiks and Eman -
Okay - I promise I will have a bow in shipped before July 4. It's just that it will be bow #4.
I think I have tried so hard to make a pretty bow that I push the envelop too much.
Cedar w/ sinew and rawhide = broke.
Osage w/ paper and two really cool knots = broke
2-pice takedown out of osage backed w/ paper = broke
NOW - I am re-working the self-bow I hunted with in 2009. I know it won't break, I just need to gussy it up a little. Phew!
va
Pat, that's a fantastic looking bow with the carp skins. Great job ! Someone will be very happy soon.
----------
Andy
Looks great PatB, 4est, glad you heard from you'r guy.
Still no word from mine.......?
Keep the pics coming guys !
David, I've used superglue or titebond and they'll hold antler most of the time. Epoxy will hold for sure!
va, I am begining to feel the same way!
Pat, all I can say is WOW! That bow is really SWEET!
Did I ever mention that I am kinda ambidextrous when shooting stickbows? :smileystooges:
Heard from my guy today, all is good ! The neighbor didn't steal it off the porch :)
John, I love the carp skins too. Everyone has rattler or copperhead skins on there bows but not many with carp skins...YET! Gotta get some more.
Thanks Andy and John.
Thanks Joe. Did you look closely at the handle. It shot well for me shooting right handed and only 26" draw!
Well I took John Scifres guidance and done some more scraping. Pics to come. I think I am gonna leave it like it is and shoot it in. I think I came in about 5 pounds under but will know for sure when I shoot it in some. If so I will just pike the tips and hopefully gain it back.
I had a package on the porch today and my heart jumped a little but it wasn't my trade bow. Oh well still a few weeks to go. LOL
Stiks
Pat, I really studied that handle pic. I luv the wrap, what is it exactly?
You know I am a WEED and that allows me to see the sun through the grass,,, so that one little blade of grass couldn't hide my name! :p
 That or I just willed my name on the Olde Flip Flop!
See what I mean!
Joe, the handle wrap it hemp cord from the Walmart craft section. After I wrap it I saturate it with Massey finish. Makes a slip free wrap for any weather conditions. I've used it for handle wraps for a few years now.
Hey cool, your name fits right in there.
Pat I drew name's and don't need to be a weed to read the name. LOL
But I'll never tell. You will just have to patiently wait and wonder Joe. But you never know it could be like winning the lottery with a little better odds. 1/44 LOL
This is what makes this whole thing great and so much fun.
Stiks
I'm going ot to scrape on my bow a little more and get her to final tiller. I'm then doing overlays and finish and sending her off to --- ----. Hopefully by the beginning of next week.
Kris, I owe you a lot of thanks for talking me into this bow trade. I've been working on 4 different bows since this started back in January, the first in over a year. Now I'm hooked again!
John, Have you posted pics yet? Guess I need to go back through 25 pages to see!
Wow Pat Beautiful bow. Looks great
I'm glad I talked you into it too Pat. Now if I can just manage to draw your name next year LOL
pps. 4 and 14
Pat
Great looking bow, Wish it was heading my way, Joe Weed will be proud.
John
Are you going to post more pics ? Would like to see it after the shooting in at Cloverdale.
Man pat b's bow is SWEEEET!
Yes. Probably tonight.
pete, that last pic is a joke. I placed my name on there via computer. I can only hope I get the bow sent to my address!
You shoot left handed right !!! Because it looks like its made for a South Paw :bigsmyl:
Joe and everyone
Iam just guessing about destination of Pat B's . bow Just trying to keep the banter going, this trade bow, project has been fun and hope that it continues.
Pete
Here she is at final tiller, 54@ 27"
Here is the upper limb overlayed on the lower. She's slightly positive on the tiller and about as close as I can get. THere are a couple things that still bug me a bit but I believe she is done. Sanding, staining the sinew on the back and then some finish and off she goes to --- ------
(http://sticknstring.webs.com/photos/2010-Pictures/tdt23.jpg)
Looks good to me John.
I went back and checked all the older posts in Johns build for the swap. This is excellent and I luv the raised handle on the back, great profile and excellent tiller. Way to go John! Lot's of nice bow traded but I think this one and Pat B's have my eye!
John we want to see your finish job too!
tillering looks great! Who ever gets this bow should be very happy.
Thanks. I'll definitely post finished pics. I got the tips and handle shaped pretty good last night. I'll sand her tonight and maybe get the stain done. It's so humid right now I can't do spray poly. It tried on a scrap piece last night and it did not go well. I might have to do it inside. Don't tell the wife :)
Looks awsome John, I gotta learn that photoshop trick it looks like it really helps.
So I got the rough tillering done and shaped the riser and nocks. The handle is lookin really nice. Its two layers of nice green poplar, than curly maple with a scrap piece of a cutting board I made on one side.Im dont know how to post pics though, do you have to have a photobucket account or something like that?
Yes bowur but it is free
So I'm one of the lost souls who signed up for the bow trade but then have not said anything since. Sorry about that. I knew that time was limited but I still thought I'd have been done with the bow much earlier. Not so. Between work, 5 kids, and all the activities that come with them, I just haven't gotten on here like I should have.
Anyway, I am close to getting my bow finished and so I thought I would post a few pictures of the progress as it has occurred over the past months.
First off, a trip to the wood stash. I cut all my osage when I was living in Indiana and then hauled it all with me when I moved to Idaho 7 years ago. Here's part of it.
(http://thumb3.webshots.net/t/85/85/2/33/82/2435233820044045383HmJcdC_th.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2435233820044045383HmJcdC)
And here's the candidate that was picked.
(http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/26168/2939520730044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2939520730044045383unCnOp)
Here's what the rings look like.
(http://inlinethumb58.webshots.com/34937/2262289590044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2262289590044045383sWPywx)
A little shaving to get the back ready.
(http://inlinethumb34.webshots.com/46945/2194186560044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2194186560044045383lkvsiS)
And some cutting to outline.
(http://inlinethumb07.webshots.com/44550/2283685750044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2283685750044045383vkUzHD)
Next comes the heat bending.
(http://inlinethumb34.webshots.com/46689/2603089780044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2603089780044045383GRUleU)
And you end up with something like this:
(http://inlinethumb02.webshots.com/31041/2742371160044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2742371160044045383sfBXSm)
Unfortunately, I messed that one up and had to start all over again. In my haste to get a second bow done on time, I failed to take any pictures of the process and so all I've got for now is one of the almost finished bow.
(http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/37438/2909868640044045383S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2909868640044045383SUWYzl)
The finish and writing are also now on it and I just need to get a handle wrap on and make a string for it which I hope to do in the next day or two. My goal is to mail it on Friday, but I'm not sure that it will happen or not. If not then, it will have to wait for a week because I leave for scout camp on Saturday.
Holy crap! I want a wall of bows too!
Steve,
Awesome wood man! I think I remember that tree :) That is one good looking bow. Looks like you moved some thing around in the man cave. Hope all is well with you and the clan. Wish I was there (in September).
John
Good job Steve!
I was just catching up with the trade bow thread when I came across the pics you posted.
I think Stevie Wonder could follow a growth ring on your stave. Back when I still made my own bows I considered it almost a gift from God if I came across a stave that looked anything like close to yours.
When I think about where it came from originally its' not so surprising. All the folks that came from that part of the world to the MoBoJam always had good wood with them to trade, sell, or give away.
I can't tell you the number of times that I'd pick up some really nice staves when Sunday rolled around and there would be piles of wood out by the road free for the taking just because they didn't want to haul all that weight back home with them..lol
You literally have a great stash going on. Premium grade wood that's been moved to a lower humidity climate and aged for several years.
YHS
God bless,Mudd
How the tiller look?
full draw pic
(http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh24/krischris123004/bowtillerpics007.jpg)
Braced at 6.5"
Nice.
Looks real good Kris!
When is yours going out? Give us some details on the specs.
Joe
It's a boo backed Jatoba 62.5 tip to tip.
I think she's a little light so I think I'm gonna pike it an inch on both ends and hopefully gain about 5# or so. She draws to 28". I hope to send it out next week.
I will post finished specs with pics when she's ready to go. It's been fun building it and I hate tto let it go but I've got some more boo and jatoba LOL.
Looks really nice, Kris! But, I'd really advise leaving it as is. The tiller is nice, especially on an asymmetrical bow. Further, you're approaching (or are right at) 90 degrees on the string angle at the tips. Knock another 2" off that bow and it'll probably stack horribly. Call it good. How much under weight are you? Remember, there were no guarantees stipulated in this trade, so if you miss the weight a bit, no harm. Again, looks really nice.
For some reason I can't see your pics Kris!
Steven, Very nice looking bow so far. Looking forward to seeing the finished bow. Super piece of osage!
I came in about 4# under weight. I don't know why you can't see my pics Pat.
I did develope a bit of a problem and thanks to 4est post on a patch I think it will be fine. It fretted about 3" from the fade on the bottom limb. It is a very small one but it is there none the less. If It was my bow I would just leave it but I would really like for this thing to survive for years to come. So I am gonna patch it.
I will post mor pics later. By the way this thing shoots great and has no handshock. I really suprised myself with it for sure. All that is left is to patch the fret and finish and off she goes.
Stiks
Now I can see them. Very nice. How high is the brace. Looks a little high but it is a short bow so maybe that's it.
I would think 6.5 is probably good for that bow.
Clock it counting down to the 4th! I gotta get my back up finished but it will be hotter than *#!! in the shop this weekend!
Just applied the skins to my trade bow. My wife is away for the day and took our camera with her. I will post some pics later.
It's at 6.5 and seems to shoot best there Pat. I will post some pics of the spot I think needs patched and you guys can tell me what you think.
Joe, I would ship the bow you finished if all else fails on your backup. My bow came in about 4# under the light side and it's going in the mail bud.
Kris
Osagetree
Just ship your first bow, I will not be dissapointed when it gets to my place. (LOL)
Pete
My bow went out this morning, USPS, Priority mail so she should be at her new home by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Please let me know when she gets there so I can stop worrying! d;^)
So, when you get home from work and there is a 70"x4" PVC tube on your porch you will know it got there OK!
Oh man, that is worse than xmas when I was a young boy. I see all these wonderful bows here and I know one of them will be mine soon. Everyday when I come home from work I'm all tense if there's a long parcel in front of the door. And it's gettin' worse everyday...
----------
Andy
Sorry Andy but I don't think my bow would make it to Switzerland by Monday! d;^)
I know what you mean about the anticipation. Curiosity is about to get the best of me!!!
I hope ol' flip flop is coming to Kansas!!! Finishing mine up tomorrow. Pictures to follow and hopefully ship her out sometime this coming week. Any suggestions on what carrier to use?
I always use USPS and ship priority mail with delivery confirmation. Never had a problem and with delivery confirmation you can track the package.
Pat I can't wait for your bow to get where it's going, almost as bad as waiting on mine to get here. LOL
Just got the finish sanding done on my trade bow, Gonna get the Tru-oil on it tomorrow and get it packaged up and hopefuly shipped out monday. Will get some pictures of it up tomorrow after all the finish is put on it.
Thanks
Boswell
I finally took some pics and got it posted, here she is. I ordered the string and it should be here by wednesday. so I'll get some braced pics then. The picture on the tillering stick is a little askew.
the riser is gonna come out really nice
(http://i1029.photobucket.com/albums/y357/bowur/bv.jpg)
Looks like someones been in the shop today. Coming along nicely!
Need you guys to check out Fish-n-Chicks post on his trade bow and see if we can give Boswell some advice on his bow.
I'll have look in after diner Kris!
Meanwhile here are the finished pics and stats;
62" 49# @ 28". Below weight by 6#, sorry and if it is unacceptable send it back,,, or send it to Kris aka Sticks-n-Strings & I'll make you another one!
Fathers day so I got to do what I wanted. I shot this bow for about an hour this morning, cooked a little, made a string for my next bow and applied the signature and two coats of true oil to the swap bow I named "Splinter". Should get it in the mail by the end of the week.

Time to eat and relax!!!!
Here's a few pics after I got the skins on. Obtained these as a matched pair. They don't exactly match and one had damage near the tail. I used them anyway. The one that was damaged caused me to have to offcenter it a bit but I think it still looks okay. You can deffinitely tell it's 2 snakes. I think I'll take it's name from that and name her 2 snakes.
I haven't seen much at all posted from my guy. I read a post as to concern that somebody may get shafted out of a bow. I'm not the best builder here by far, but if anyone does not get their bow I will build you one.

Gonna start with the tru oil later today and get a leather grip on her in the next day or so. She should be on her way to her new home by the end of the week. Paul<><
Paul, nice job on the bow and the skins. They look good to me, I like canebrake skins!!
Nice offer on the "extra" bow build by the way.
David
Kodiak that is looking good for sure!
I'd say everything will be fine after all is said and done. But that is a great offer.
WAHOO!!!!!!!!!! :notworthy:
Got my bow today! Pat did an excellent job. It is a real looker as you know. I am so excited I could poop! :o
Can't shoot now due to a thunderstorm but, I will when it passes! Try to get some pics for yuns too!
Pat, thank you so much for the fine trade bow. You sure make them sleek and easy to look at.
GREAT craftsmanship!!! :clapper:
I knew you would love it Joe, I would of given about anything just to be there see your face when it arrived.
Congrats on a sweet bow!
Stiks
Glad it made it there OK Joe. When Kris told me who I would be building for I was a bit intimidated. That and not having built a bow for over a year I knew it had to be special. Looking forward to the pics!
Joe can't tell you how happy I am for you and jealous as all heck. That is a great looking bow and i bet it shoots like a dream as well.
I had to scale down my efforts on my bow. I was trying for a BBO but as it was my first effort at one of these, it didn't work out, go figure. I had to revert to a style of bow I could build. It looks good, is smooth shooting and shoots straight. I hope my recipient can appreciate it. I just wish it was as good a bow as Pat's bow. hoping to send something special along with it.
WOW,,, Pat sure made a winner here in this bow! I'm telling you that "Flip Flop" is a real shooter. Even with the character in the limbs, the profile is nice and reflexed showing no sign of string follow at all. Performance wise, it beats anything I've built or ever shot in a long, long time.
I've had a smile on my face since I got it!
Here she is at about full draw. I noticed right off that "Flip Flop" seemed heavy compared to one of my bows of similar size. The wood must be of really good density.
Pat where did the wood come from?
The handle wrap is really nice and seems like it would be fun to try myself sometime. The tips are sleek and thin making for a fast shooter. Great character in the limbs (more than any pics have shown or can show) she has a smooth comfortable draw and great string allignment. I am really, really pleased with Pats craftsmanship. The finish and final sanding made a fine, fine bow even finer!
I can't say enough nice things about this bow to do it justice.
Pat and Kris, thanks again and let's do it again next year. I'll be following along with the rest of the trading that is going on with a big, big smile on my face!!!
Boy Joe you make blush! Flip Flop was therapy for me this past winter. I was out of work for 3 months because of weather and a bad back. The July 4 deadline gave me the confidence to get back into building bows. I purposely chose a difficult stave to make myself concentrate on what to do with what I had to work with. The worst piece of bow wood is the best teacher!
I'm glad she shoots well for you. I have been told that my scale is heavy so she may be heavier than indicated.
The wood might be from Missouri but I don't know for sure. I just picked it out of the pile in my work shop.
I'd love to see a pic of you, Flip Flop and a nice Ohio buck this fall! d;^)
I can't see the pics but this has happened a few times lately. They will be up soon.
:clapper:
Happy for you Joe!!
SWEEEEET BOW!!!!
I'm with Pat, I'll be looking for "THE" pic next fall.
Boy oh boy! look at the grin from ear to ear, made the whole thing worth it.
Joe your bow is looking fine as well!
She looks good on you, Joe. Full draw looks good on you too. It hard to tell until the user pulls a new bow.
Pat so glad you took your time with this as it sure shows in the end result.
Yes, I have decided this will be my hunting bow for this coming season. I hope I can make you as proud as this bow and swap endevor has made me.
Thanks again and are you sure I don't owe you anything? Cause this bow is SO SWEET!!!!
The tiller is complete on my trade bow. 64# at 28" and should shoot in at 60# at 28".
According to my gizmo, the tiller is nearly perfect.
Question! How do I go about shooting in a bow at 28" when my draw is 26". My husband and my son are nearly 28" but they don't shoot much and I can't be sure they will be shooting it at they draw lenght especially a 60+# bow. I have a cousin the shoots 29". I quess I could have him short draw and shoot it in for me.
I will post pics in a couple of days.
Bona,
I remember reading something in the bent stick about leaving it on the tiller tree drew foe a couple hours and it would have the same effect as shooting it in.
I will look it up tomarrow and let you know exactly what it says.
Stiks
I leave all my finished bows strung for a few hours. I also draw them at least 300 times on the tree to full draw. Then I shoot them at whatever draw I can muster. Bring it here this weekend. I'll shoot it for you a few times :) I only draw 27 normally but can hit 28 a few times at least.
Bona, I can only pull to 26" and the bow I made is for 28". I tillered it out to 29" and shot it at my 26". That's all we can do. Osagetree(Joe Weed) is left handed but I can't shoot that way so I shot it right handed.
I usually leave a newly completed bow strung for 2 to 6 hours to "sweat" it, basically controlled stressing.
Bona,
Pg 31 of The Bent Stick...
The New bow.
"You can make a bow that will keep all it's weight it has when new. This can be done as soon as you are satisfied the limbs are well tillered and bending evenly. You simply put the bow on the tillering tree and leave it for 30, 40 or 60 minutes. It is not necessary to pull the bow as far as it can go."
It does go on to say that any bow will still take some string follow after being shot under normal use and settle in without loosing weight when given this treatment.
Hope this helps.
Stiks
Thanks for the input guys. I remember reading about letting them sit strung for several hours and I've done that a few times. I don't remember reading about leaving it on the tiller tree for a while.
John, I work this weekend so I don't know if I can bring it down. I would love to have your opinion thought. I'll see what I can do.
:bigsmyl:
I'm here all weekend. Got some crawlspace flooding to take care of though. Might be under the house :) 5" of rain in 3 hours will do that to you I guess :(
Alright guys! My trade bow is finished. I learned alot along the way. I wasn't sure about getting in on the trade because of my lack of experience building bows. I've snapped two osage attempts and knew that if I was building it for someone else then I would be forced to slow down. It worked! Anyways...she's kind of plain jane compared to some others on here but i'm proud of my first successful bow besides one other red oak board bow.
The creek I hunt on is Sand Creek, which is where I cut the tree.

nice looking bow tyler. Those are some fatty growth rings in the handle!
When is the next TG Bow Trade? I'm hoping to be a good enough bowyer to throw my hat in the ring next time. :campfire:
Kmc I think it is Jan.
January it is!
Oh sign a brother up... I better get my game face on and bring my A game.
Hey Sticks
This trade is growing b4 the first one in over. :bigsmyl:
I will be the first to sign up.
Pete
You did a very nice job on your second bow, Tyler. Can we see a full draw pic?...and an unbraced profile pic.
Absolutely. I'll get 'em up tomorrow P.M.
Here are some of the pictures that I promised. This first one is at 18". There is some stuff in the way but I hope you can see the tiller ok.

This is braced at 6 1/4".
...and just unbraced.
It is not the original one that I started on. Nothing wrong with the other one, I started tillering this one instead by accident and was so close to having it done when I realized that I just went with it.
It is 58" ntn. 64# at 28". It has about an inch of set on the upper limb and one and a quarter inch set on the lower limb. (Dean Torges says a little bit of set makes them shoot sweeter.)
I shot her a few times yesterday but she needs braced a little higher cause I was getting some wrist slap. It's either that or my form is not so good on a bow that weight.
It has elk antler tip overlays and two layers of black walnut in the handle. The string is made but needs served and silencers added.
Next stain the boo, seal and wrap the handle.
Sure does look good Bona!
Guys we need to slow down a bit, LOL! The sign up for next year will be posted in Jan. If we get everybody to go again plus the guys that have posted wanting in the next one we'll have over 60 bows getting swapped.
Pretty awsome. That means it would take at least 60 or so years to obtain a bow from everyone if you could that luck in the draw. :bigsmyl:
Alright, almost ready to mail but need some advise. To stain or not to stain...that is the question! The leather handle and tips look great with the white wood but I feel it's too bright to use as a hunting bow and not sure if clear finish is going to darken it enough to make a difference. The lightest stain I have is golden oak and it is definately golden. What do you guyz think? Should I just leave it as is?
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I would stian it something a little darker than golden oak. Maybe a chestnut or something.
Got a buddy down the street that makes furniture and stuff. He may have some more stains to choose from. Oh darn...another reason to go to Lowes!!
Looks good Bona!
Holt it needs staining, IMHO!
Hi Bona,
I agree that the limbs, where they are bending look nice. But, most of that bend is in the center of the limbs. I would get the near handle wood working more. How much weight do you have to play with?
See the angle your string and limb form? It is a bit over 90 degrees. That means that the weight gained in the last 2" or so of the draw is stack weight which really adds nothing to the cast of the bow.
David Holt,
I'd stain it if it's a hunting bow. If it's not, I'd go with whatever makes you feel good.
Congrats Bona, you sure got one sweet looking bow. But I got to tell you, that you completely missed the weight, it's way to heavy for me... ha ha ha
Very nice job, well done !

Andy
Well as posted earlier I had a fret come up in my trade bow (not a bad one) I was gonna patch it but after doing some more reading in The Bent Stick i decided to try and stop it in it's tracks like Paul Comstock said could be done. I scraped it a little for about 6" past the fret and shot it quite a bit and I'm pretty sure it will be fine.
I'm gonna go ahead and ship it. It came in at about 43# at 28" which is about 2# lite for the minimum request on the bow I built. It shoots great and has great cast. it has about 1.25 of string follow and a little positive tiller (about 1/4") so i'm gonna just leave well enough alone.
She's got a journey ahead of her for sure.
This is actually the first I have completely finished and I am proud of her for sure. Next year I hope to have the skill for one of those beautiful character bows. I planned on one this time but put it on the back burner and went with a little better plan for my skill level LOL

Nice Kris. I really like to colors and rest... neat!! The tiller looks great to me too!
Thanks Joe,
Means alot coming from a guy like yourself. Now it's time to get after one of them snakey bows. I got some staves with some super good character.
I know where theres more Osage than you can shake a stick at so you need to plan a road trip.
Stiks
Great looking bow! The tiller looks great. Jatoba is great wood to work with, I have made several boo backed bows like that combination. Who ever gets this bow will have a shooter for sure. Great job
Cool bow, Kris and very well tillered. Looks quick!
Alright Pat here are your pictures. How bad is it? Don't hold anything back!
In the lower limb @ the outer 3rd is where I ran into snakey grain. I'm not sure if it is set or that is just the way the grain is.
Tyler, she looks like she's got a hinge about third way up from the fade on the upper limb. Might want to give her about ten good scrapes and bend her about twenty or thirty times.
Both limbs look a little stiff at the fades, Might just give the bottom one about five scrapes.
Lets see what everyone else has to say first.
Pat she is quick for a lighter weight bow
Thanks for all the compliments guys. it was great finishing her up for sure.
Stiks
very nice work guys  whoever gets them is going to be very happy. sticks i like the handle and rest on that bow great color combinations.
Very nice looking bow Stiks!
John, I thought she needed to bend more near the handle too and maybe out more toward the tips. I have about 8 or 9 lbs. to play with. I will take a few more swipes near the handle.
Balding,
The upper limbs needs more towards the handle. Almost all the bend is in the center third. The lower needs some at the handle also. Here they are overlaid on one another.
I love it when John does that!
Hey John! Why didn't you do that for mine?!
I added a picture of my bow after working on the near handle areas in the post with the other full draw picture. See if you think it looks any better. Sorry it's blurry.
It is 60# at 28", so I can work on it a little more.
Look at this pic. See how long the non-bending portion of your handle area is? All your bend is in the center of the limb. The right limb is bending more than the left.
I highlighted the string angle for you. See how it is greater than 90 degrees? When it approaches 90 degrees, you lose all your leverage and begin pulling against the length of the bow. You are putting most of the draw weight into trying to pull the limbs apart rather than adding anything to the spring that is your simple machine to power the arrow.
Get the near handle wood bending a lot more. Use whatever you have left in weight to get that bending better.
John,
Your ability to clearly point out the areas that need work on a bow, and then the solution to fix it, is outstanding. It is one of the most helpful things that anyone does to help us less experienced bowyers.
Here is mine hoping to ship out this week

Bow shoots real nice !
John K
That's a very nice bow John. dvs did an excellent job on it.
Wow, I sure do like that one a lot, especially the full draw profile.
Ok, my bow is down to 54# @ 28". I've scraped the near handle area a bunch and I don't see much if any improvement. I don't know how to put the lines on the picture like John does but I used post-it notes to try and see the string angle.
I posted another picture on page 31 in my second post on that page, along with the first two if you want to input anything. Actually I think I will just post them here.

thats a nice looking bow Bona. :clapper:
Looks like sshe's quite a bit better Bona.
maybe a few more scrapes close to the fades for about 5 or 6 inches. maybe five at a time and pull it 20 or thirty times between scapes. Looks like it might take one or two times. JMO
It is looking better to me Bona. I agree with Stiks. If you have a couple more pounds to give, she'll come around even more. Either way, I think it'll please the recipient.
All these bows are looking so AWESOME. I see a bit of enthusiasm that has been missing for a while. Good job!
Mine's done except a string and handle wrap. I'll work on those tonight and tomorrow. I'll update teh pics then.
Nice looking bow Bona
It has definetly got me enthused John.
I gotta get me some more boo and slats. I think I am gonna build a few more boo backed bows and hopefull have a sweet character bow for deer season built.
The poundage requested was 55-60 so I hate to go any lower. If you think it will be alright as is, I think I will finish her up. I wanted to give an excellent bow. But I think I will have to go with my best effort so far. Thanks everyone for your help. I will get final pics out before I send her.
Bona, Building bows it like cutting hair. You have to know when to stop!
Dress her up and send her off to her new life, Mom! d;^)
I think everyone will be happy with what they get, as we all can appreciate the effort that has goe into making each and every bow in this swap. We give our best and get anothers best, can't ask or expect more than that. I am proud to be a part of this.
She is fine like that Bona.
I got the string done for mine and the handle wrap ready to lay on tonight. I gotta say it is one hot bow, in a cool sorta way. It will be difficult to part with :(
i got mine finished up this week and just put the first 2 coats of finish on. It came out under draw weight though suprisingly . I have two other bows the same dimensions only thinner and they pull more than this one  I hope the new owner likes it

Full draw

Here it is with the lower limb overlaid on the upper. I used the fulcrum principle Torges talks about in his Balance article from a few years ago.
Here is the belly. A black tip and center fading into natural osage yellow. Black stain or dye is comprised mostly of blue color so you will detect a green tint as it mixes with the yellow. I like that but it fades over time as the osage darkens.
And here is the back. I stained it black for the whole length. I think it looks cool.
Very nice John. The tiller looks spot on and the dye job is cool.
Good looking bows for sure!
John that is one sweet stick of osage.
That's a good looking bow for sure B glass I'm sure whoever gets it will be satisfied
Shawn
Everyone
Great looking and Iam shure even better shooting bows. As Shawn said whoever gets them will be satisfied.
Pete
Congrats for that awesome looking piece of osage, John. Love the dye job, very nice.

Good looking bows everone. It looks like everone put forth there best effort.
I have watched "Boswell" build his and it has to be one of his best bows yet.
This has been fun watching all the bows being made and seeing the different designs. I'm already looking forward to the next trade.
David
I just put my bow in the mail. Ihope it makes it OK and the new owner is happy with it.
Where did you send that beauty John? I hope my way. Mark
Mine will be in the shipping lanes by nightfall.

Cain't say mater.
John, John, John,,, how can I ever live up to that? You know what I'm talk'n bout!

Well if the finish on my grip dries Two Snakes will go in the mail tomorrow. (http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/2-12.jpg)
Did a hemp cord grip with a massey finish. (http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/5-6.jpg)(borrowed the idea and instructions from PatB) Hope you don't mind Pat. Went for a floppy rest. (http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/pmills1956/4-9.jpg)

nice work guys!
Very nice bows. Well done!
very very nice work every one. :clapper: :clapper:
shipped mine out today, hope the new owner likes it
I was unable to ship mine today. The Post Offices around here closed for the holiday. On the USPS website it lists the holiday as the 5th. Around here they are taking the 3rd and 5th. I'll get it out on Tuesday if work permits.
I plan to send mine out on Monday. I had a string made but messed up making a 58" string instead of a 55" string.
Do you guys put a coat of Tru oil over the writing?
Bona, it will be Tuesday before you can mail your bow. Monday is a federal holiday. d;^)
I generally add a coat or two of Tru-Oil first, write on that then add the rest of the coats over that as I finish the bow; usually 4 or so more coats. One good thing about Tru-Oil is you just work it into a small area and it will blend in with the rest. A "light" buffing with 0000steel wool between coats helps to blend it in. Makes for easy repairs when needed.
...also, some inks will bead up on the Tru-Oil so in those cases I will do a quick spray of satin poly on the area to be written on. You have to let this cure completely before writing on it but that slightly textured surface will allow the ink to preform as it should. Then I coat that with Tru-oil as I finish the bow.
I used a fine tip sharpie to do my writing. Did a test run on a piece of scrap for insurance. I buffed the area for the writing lightly with 0000 steel wool and applied the writing. I waited a day before appling tru oil over the writing. I didn't encounter any smearing when appling the tru oil over the writing. Like PatB said the tru oil blends right in with the original tru oil finish.
I mailed mine out priority mail on Friday morning. Post office said it should be to it's destination on Tuesday. Hope it works well for its new owner and that they like it.

Boys I feel like I've hit the jackpot. I had a white PVC pipe to open yesterday when I got home from work. In it was the John Scifres tradebow. What a shooter! It is a beautiful bow and I am very thankful. Thanks John! I shot her for about an hour yesterday and shoots just where I was lookin. I did take pictures and will post later this week. I am on the road today.

Just wondering how many folks didn't get their bow.
I know my friend Sharppoint hasn't recieved his bow yet.
Kodiakkid,
I've been in contact with everyone and bows should be in the mail or getting ready to go in the mail.
If any one has not recieved there bow send me a PM.

I actually own 2 glass bows now. Both got in trade for selfbows. I have killed a couple deer with my Ancient Spirits Kadiak recurve. It's awesome that eman's bow shoots the same spine. I'm hunting with both this year.
