I'm considering trying my hand at Bingham's take-down recurve. Can anyone enlighten me on why so many take-down risers have such high mass and look so "blocky"?

I think they turn out like that because beginner builders (myself included) sometimes dont realize how much rounding and sanding you can do to achieve a more sleek look. I look back on some of those that I made and they are very blocky..just because after I traced the template on the block and cut it out it looked great to me at that time and I hadnt seen or studied pics of other nicely shaped, sleek designs....so after the block was cut, a little sanding and I was done. That being said, the added mass soaks up some excess vibration and makes it dead in the hand even if the tiller is a bit off.
Thanks for the info. As a beginner, I am concerned with messing with engineering I haven't any expierence with.
