:coffee: Cant wait to see this one.
...that's kinda mean don't ya think? :) Looking forward to seeing what you are making Kenny!
Bob
what a tease!
Well, get to work Kenny! It looks great
..its probably less complicated than I am thinking but I thought quite a bit about how to get laminations like that without cutting a blank of wood, corner to corner and sideways.
Cant wait to see this baby.
I can't wait to get it done,it has an experimental lam in it. If it makes weight, its gonna be my huntin bow this year!
The lams aren't too bad,I just made a sorta sled to hold the rear end of the blank 5/8" out from the fence. Then set my saw on 2 degrees and ran it thru. Then you have to square up the blank from that face.
I had thought about it a while also, then got an order for some charcoal lams like this for a fellow to put on his Widow. So I did mine in Nutmeg Brown, the riser also. Shoulda put a charcoal saddle in the riser tho!!
Looks sharp so far, can't wait to see the whole bow.
This is going to be good. :notworthy:
:wavey:
Looks great so far cant wait for the rest!!
Dang Kenny, you should have waited till Thursday or Friday. Five days is a long time. What are you trying, foam cores or a new carbon composite?
that was dirty. like jason said 5 days is a long time to wait. something tells me it'll be worth it though.
I used to think you were a nice guy. Obviously everyone who ever said anything nice about you was sadly mistaken. :smileystooges:
Aww come on guys,I'm just funnin ya!! It is a new experimental form,58-60" d/r(can't get away from d/r)
The lam has a builtin powerlam and tip wedge,it is much easier than holdin all the small pieces during glueup!
Really there isn't much to see besides what I showed ya already! :D
They are some nice looking lams Kenny ! I would like to see some pics of those charcoal lams .
Bill
Helen has a couple of longbows with reverse tapers?, it looks like they were ground on a sled with a offset hump. It does look like the built in powerlams and tip wedges would be easier than fighting with multiple wedges. Good luck with the build, the crossgrain actionwood veneers look great.
Here's a pic of the veneers Kenny just cut for me. I think they look sharp! I'll post up some finished pics after I get the finish sprayed on them.

Thanks Chris!
I just ground the limbs out, scaled at 62#@28" Whew!! Hope I can lose bout 10#!!
Looking really nice Kenny. I love those neneers.

ME TOO!!!! That cross cut one above is just awesome!!!!
Chris
Got a bit more done to it,down to 54#@ 28",trying tio decide whether to drop a couple more or not....
Here it is on the machine...

My shop is a MESS!!
And where the string is at 28" draw, not too bad for a 60" bow I think...
The limbs are narrow on this one, brain fart in the math,so had to skinny em down to 1.25 at fades,1/2 - at tips
Thru the shootin machine and chrony 192.2fps @ 28" with a 9gpp(plus a couple grns) arrow.
I'm tickled pink with her! :)
That's a good looking one- limbs still have that nice flow to them- maybe trap it a little and show us some pictures of the lams- going to look cool with some finish on it! That's the shorter one - right.
looks like you made yourself hunting bow! my new firehose got here late today, Helen says weekends are off limits in the shop, so I'll be gluing a KennyM R/D longbow up Monday afternoon
Yep,that is the 60".
Do you guys trap back or belly? And why?
Robert, that is my very own bow for this year!
Will spray finish tomorrow, more pics then.
Looking forward to the pics Kenny, I have used Gray and Camo but I havent seen the brown cross cut!
Looks good Kenny.
Looks good Kenny. Great performance and limb shape at full draw. String angle looks like it could draw close to 30"! Sure does simplify things combining the power lam and the tip wedges during the grinding process.
Dan
Kenny- The ones I've trapped are to the belly- there is alot of info on POA as to which way is better- either way you will only lose a few #'s but the mass weight of the limbs will be decreased quite a bit.
My back is narrower than the belly, I think the glass works better under compression so I do it that way. Trapping lets you control where the limbs bend and its a good way to adjust weight but it really doesnt help with performance.
Thicker trapped or thinner square, the end results the same, but the trapped limbs do look cool!
Thanks guys, guess it doesn't matter where you trap then?
I might go a little on the back for less wind resistance if any then! :D
Gotta get back out ot the shop and sand on her,may shoot a coat of finish after a bit!
Very nice looking can not wait to see it with a finish.
Shouls make a great hunting bow for you.
Tim
cool beans Kenny...skinny limbs are da bomb..
Bob
3 coats on now, pics soon!! :bigsmyl:
I'm likin actionwood better all the time!!
Kenny you've got to do something to get that finish to dry faster!!! I can't wait for the next round of pictures, lol!!!
Tips ended up fairly small....

I really like the ease of sanding and finishing the actionwood, seems to perform well too.
Very nice Kenny!
That cross-cut brown looks nice! Great job Kenny!
I usually don't care much for actionwood, but that one looks awesome! The limbs laminations are great and I love how well you matched up the grain on the belly overlays with the grain in the riser. I might now have to consider actionwood in my next bow project.
Great Job!
That looks excellent Kenny..and nice tips. That actionwood does sand and work well doesnt it. Is this your new hunting bow then?
Thanks guys!
John, that was surprisingly easy, there was a light-colored strip in the riserblock,I just lined it up when I glued the overlay pcs back on,worked like a charm!! :)
For what its worth, I didn't trap it yet, just rounded the corners good, came in at 53# @ 28", same as last years bow!
Thanks Brad, yep it is my new huntin bow!
Never tried actionwood in a riser- that bow came out looking great! Should be a killer.
Looks pretty awesome as usual Kenny. Great job.
Shawn
Very nice Kenny. I really like the riser.
Great job buddy! I like it a lot. I might have to try one of them "plywood" bows!

...So whatch doing with last year's bow??
Kenny, that is another great looking bow. Those lams are really cool.
Thanks again guys!
Marty, I kinda thought the same about actionwood, but this bow has me changin my thinkin!!
Scott, it will be my backup bow,I gave my last years backup(as new cept for arrow tuning) to another charity benifit.
Very nice!
Kenny, your not only producing fantastic looking lams, you also build outstanding bows. I love those tiny tips... actually I love everything on that bow.

Andy
Great Job Kenny. I think I'm likin that action wood. :clapper:
Thanks again guys. I was lookin for something different,I love the look of the limbs for hunting(my main purpose) and the riser ain't too shabby.
I told Renee "This is the one, I won't need to build me any more bows"
Would you believe she rolled her eyes and said" YEAH RIGHT"??
That's funny Kenny- I remember telling the fellow who got me started- I'm just going to build 1....
Kenny was this bow made from your original form or is this a newer version?
Also, how wide are the tips on this bow, it looks sweet! I really like the skinny tips. How did it affect the projected weight of the bow to make the tips that skinny?
Dave, nobody can build just one!! LOL
Scott, This is a modified version. Took it to 60" and gave it a little more preload on the limbs by moving them forward a bit.
Also has the TW/PL lam in it. Wedges on both ends with .001 taper throughout.
Tips are barely 1/2" at inner end of overlays. The bow is only 1.25 at fades because of a math in my head screwup on est. stack height! LOL
Worked out good tho!
Good job Kenny. I think you will really like carrying that bow in the woods next year. Thin bows are easier to carry I think. I would really like to see how you taper those lams. Is it a proprietary design method?
yep, that was just as good as i thought it would be.
good looking bow Kenny
Jason, I wanted .010" per inch on the wedges on that lam,so I took a couple .002s and a .001 and made .005" per inch wedges feathered to 0, the right length for the wedges. Then used 2 of them stacked to make my .010 per inch.
Then you lay them on the most perfect parallel you can make and lay your sled(the one you are making) on top and grind it to shape.
Now you make the lams.
Then to get the .001 taper overall if you want it,just lay the new double tapered end sled on your .001 sled and grind.
When done with all that,I ran just the lams thru the sander and thinned the ends down parallel, making sure not to get into the working part of the wedges. On this bow,the butt ends ended up about .075,which will bend up the belly ramps of the riser without making a thick glue line.
Hope that made some sorta sense!
It may be easier to do than explain.
Great Job.
Great looking bow!!
Looks great Kenny.
Great looking bow Kenny! Want me to come up again and see how it does at a LOOOONG draw?
Like the tips too. I liked the bows you showed me when I was up but if there was anything I would have changed it would have been the tips. Yours were pretty much standard size and looked great but I've always liked the looks of tiny tips on a longbow.
So, it sounds like you just cut the action wood on a slight bias to get the diagonal effect? I'm guessing strictly on the veneer and not an actual working lam?
Thanks guys!
Dave, I think it'll go 30 or 31 without probs!
I like the small tips also, but don't usually go too small if other folks are gonna be shootin em much for safety factor. Always wonder how small is too small...
The angle cut is a slight compound cut,and the veneers(or outer lams) are .040,so they would be working.
