Title: Brass inserts or weight tubes?
Post by: CMR on February 05, 2007, 09:26:00 AM
I would like to increase my arrow weight. Right now, its 480gr total weight.
I'd like to add 100gr to it, making total weight 580gr.
Bow is 55#, BTW.

Should I use brass inserts or weight tubes to add the weight?

I would suggest the brass inserts. It puts the weight up front and transfers more efficiently into penetration on impact.  It may affect arrow spine though, so you would need to tune to compensate for that.

Craig: I've tried various methods over the past half dozen years or so and have settled on heavy weight up front on carbons. It alleviates all the "issues" that weight tubes bring with them. The only problem you may have is that if you already have arrows that shoot well adding the extra weight up front can affect the shooting characteristics of the arrows because of the effect on spine. If I were you I would simply get some heavy field points or some heavy adapters and see if the extra weight up front causes problems. If it does then weight tubes would be  the way to go unless you can afford a stiffer set of shafts/arrows. For me the advantages of the heavy weight up front is better penetration, nocks do not get pushed out when strump shooting, quietness (some of us have had the experience of weight tubes "ratteling" in the shaft which can be heard if you are near the intended target), and there is just less "stuff" you need to have.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Think I'll try the brass inserts.

You can also use PDP weights behind the inserts once you've made the decision to go weight forward.

Being cost conscious I go with anything thatis easily reusable. The PDP weights are cheaper to start and can be easily removed and used on your next arrows.

Under "Premium Converta Point" WA-10 or WA-20 adapter

Under "Speed Point" SPxxx whatever sixe weight you want.

I use WA-20 + SP30B and 175 gr tips
