Title: Madake and tonkin boo
Post by: mmgrode on January 14, 2010, 11:30:00 PM
Hey Gang,
anyone know where a guy can get a hold of backing quality madake bamboo? I want to say it's Australian, but am not sure.  Anyone have tonkin suppliers as well?
Thanks, MG

I think that Jaap Koppedrayer of Yumi bows grows and sells mandrake bamboo. I don't have his web address.

Youtube has his complete video collection of the process of making a yumi bow.

Yep, Jaap has some.  He lives in Odum, Ga now and is growing his own bamboo.  Madake is Japenese, I do believe.  He goes by Nachtwact, or something close to that, on the other big trad site.

I got too sticks of madake from Jaap at coudersport. Finished one bow so far, it has more jump than moso and seems much harder.  Time will judge, as many a moso backed bow lifted splinters on me over the years, enough that I don't trust it anmore. Jaap told me the moso we have all been using is the weakest of the large bamboo, but the most common and largest.
