Bowyers, beginners and wood hacks like me, show us your Knots!
Challenge: Post some pictures of knots you are working on or have worked into a functionable weapon.
Feel free to provide a description or any direction you feel is needed or just photos you've found of knots on selfbows. The intent here is to show the possibilities, the hard work done and to provide incentive for others.
Some may learn something from this, some may gain confidence in a knotted up old stave, someone like me may get a bit more motivated and some will just enjoy the photo's!
Oh yeah! this oughta be good :bigsmyl:
I'll have to get my camera out.
This is a yew selfbow I made for last years hunting. It is still my go to bow now. 47#@26"

A little more wood along the edge around the pin not may have prevented this break.

Man I am diggin these pics, maybe.. Just maybe someday I'll make bows like these.
Awsome work guys.
Joe, I think yor holy bow and Dano's are my favorite so far. Love them all but those two got some eye appeal.
Kris
This bow had a nice knot in the top of the handle / fade but, ended up too light and slow. I shortened it and found a young feller to go frog'n with me. The bow fit him well and took a few frogs that night.

Neat stuff!!!!
Oh yeah, I like that nasty little take down.
I'm just a begining bowyer and for some reason tha nastier the stave the more I am drawn to it. I really like those character bows. For some reason a good straight knot free stave just don't turn me on like a wiggled up knotty one does. High hopes I know but I'll get there.
Longbowhuntr, what kind of sleeve did you use on that?
I think that was called the small "D" sleeve.
longbowhntr, really nice looking bow! Looks as though you followed the growth ring right up the limb. It's really cool that the center was removed. Did it come out easy or did you have to pick and dig a lot?
The center of the knots were pretty soft, I did have to dig a little to get them cleared out. That bow had several firsts for me...
first bow with holes in limbs
first takedown
first time using oven cleaner to age the osage
Joe, I just showed easton the froggin pics and he's ready to go again. He keeps asking me when i'm going to make him a "real bow like the 2 u gave him.
:biglaugh:
You could do it Scott!
PM me sometime!
here is one I have roughed out and am drying. Got a ways to go. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0131.jpg)
Ya mon! Dat's what'm talk'n bout! :bigsmyl:
Here's a knot on first character bow. The stave didn't have any crazy knots, but they were knots none-the-less.
I was wondering if anyone would get that. :-)
Questionable spot on backing. Left it on and it was fine.

Edge of a knot on the side of limb. Left in the finished bow.

Guys, these photos are great... I'm new to the site and have only managed one bow that hasn't broken. Workin' on a second red oak board bow. I can only wish to be able to produce such artful pieces of work.

At first, i was very reluctant to cut into the knots, and thought of going wide around them...but the bows just wouldn't bend. So i just rasped through them, filled them with superglue or epoxy...good to go.

I needed this. Just spent all morning taking my first osage stave done to the first ring and was overwhelmed with the knots. Thanks, Bhill
Awesome pics guys. If my garage ever gets warm (right now it's about 5 degrees) I'll get out and start tillering my osage stave. It's got a few cool and possibly dangerous knots to work through. The pics really give me some insight and encouragement!
