not wantong an argument, just getting ready to lay out a bow for l82hunt and was wanting opinions. The piece of wood is69 in long and pretty clean. I laid out a four in handle with two in fades. Overall length ntn is 62in. Limbs go from 1/2 in to 1 1/4 in 16 in. Then run 1 1/4 down to the fades. What do you think
forgot to mention he has a 27 in draw and I'd like to finishe at around 55@27

What wood? Nice job following the lateral grain. I'd make the bow 65 in ntn or I'd shorten the fades to 1.5 in. Jawge
thanks george. I was thinking of shotrning the fades. It is osage orange. Still think I should lenghten the limbs?
(http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0105.jpg) changed the handle layout per suggestion from george.

I am about to tackle the stave with a rasp to bring it to outlined dimensions. Any last words?
I'm with George. If the wood is clean and sound, it can certainly be done, but at those dim's I'd expect more set than normal and a shorter life. If you want to hold the length, I'd widen to 1.5", if not 1.625". To hold the width, I'd lengthen to 64 or 66". In both cases, I'd shorten the fades to 1.25" or 1.5". Of course, I'm biased towards durability and longevity.
I use the drawknife working from the wide part of the fades out to the tips to bring it closer to the profile lines. Saves a lot of pushing on the rasp. Take it off in small portions to avoid splitting into your bow. When doing this I use the drawknife upside down as it keeps the knife from digging in too far and allows more control.
generally I do useboth rasp and drawknife wheb profiling, but I always seems to rush and start to tear uo the grain. I guess that I'm going to re layout this one today before I start shaping. I will post pics around noon to show progress
well I took a little advice and went wider, but I didn't go longer. Still 62 ntn. I shortened the fadeouts by 1/4 in and it is now 1 1/2 wide at the fades.
tokk a bit longer than I thought, but I got it down to profile except in the handle. Next I am going to thickness the limbs. I am wondering how thick to start. I normally go with 1/2 in thick limbs and tiller from there. What do you guys do from here? (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0109.jpg)
well I got no answers so I am taking it down to half inch. I will try to post floor tiller pics
(http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0112.jpg) the ready to floor tiller pic
heated it up a bit for some minor adjustments
I used the lazy man heating method and just set it close to the old wood stove. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0113.jpg) worked well
Looking good!
That's a big RIGHT ON!
worked a bit more on it today. Worked out the fades a little and put on some antler tips. I haven't picked out a tip design yet and would sure like to see any tips that some of you have put on osage selfbows. Specifically antler tips so I can get a few ideas. I will put up a few pics, but it seems like some of mine aren't working. I will try to get that fixed and put up some new one.
here is a pic of the beginning of the tips. I used a small shed I found then cut it with a coping saw. First in half lenghtwise, then cut for length. I set them in the vise and sandedqfiled them as flat as I could then used 2part epoxy to attach them. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0140.jpg)
here is l82hunt at full draw. Right now it is 60@28. I have to sand and finish still, but ilm still hoping that after a little shooting it will settle in at 55@27. Shoots sweet so far.
:clapper:
I guess the full draw pic didn't come out. Here thepicof the handle he wanted. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0152.jpg)

I pulled it to far because I'm dumb. I put it back on the tree because after stringing it we heard a small crack. This bow was finished. Done. Shooting very well, and then I drew it past the point of no return. Oh well... On the his next bow. I will post more pics of this next build. This one was 62ntn, 55@27. Never found out what it pulled @28. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0153.jpg)
Sorry it broke Dave.If its any consolation I thought it lookes really nice.I especially liked the shape of the handle.
I had glenn come over and help me shape it to his liking. At least he got to shoot it. I used a high gloss finish for the first time and really liked it.
I see there is an awful lot of bend in the middle section of that upper limb...need to get more bend towards the handle and out towards the tips on your next one. When it is all concentrated in one area like that she is GOING to blow sooner or later.
yup. that's part of building bows. I still like the shape of the handle. Show us your next one DVS.
the full draw pic doesn't show the true tiller of this bow. It was pretty durn sweet. I think that it was more due to the know in the limb that it broke on. I could be wrong, but it looked good to me in person. It does look stiff in the pic though. (http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss13/dvshunter/CIMG0168.jpg)
There's fine line between how much to leave around knots. I've been wrong on both sides at least once..lol. I thought there was something about the upper limb but with all of the limbs of the tree in the back ground, it forbids I say more. I just don't see that well any more and throw in some good background blind material. Well I just can't see it good enough to say much.
Overall it was a nice looking bow. If you learned something from the experience, it wasn't a failure.
God bless,Mudd
I think it was a fun build. I have to go get a stave for the next one, but that is how it goes. This was my first attempt at tip overlays and I really liked the way they turned out so I'm still happy. Plus I have never had one blow up. Cracked a few, but never kablewy! It was pretty cool plus no one was hurt.
