Title: Quick question about bow thickness
Post by: HM10 on December 12, 2009, 06:45:00 PM
Hello,

I'm working on my first red oak board bow. I've got the front profile all tapered down to 1/2" and I'm about to start working on the side. However, I have a 31" draw and all the build-alongs I have read discuss draws out to usually 26" or 28". I was going to shape the profile down to 1/2" as well but will that be too thin for my draw? I'd love to get ~50# @ 31 but as its my first foray into bowmaking at this point I'll be happy with one that shoots period. Oh and its 70" ntn and I'm planning on backing with silk and then some snakeskin I have lying around if that matters....Thanks!

You said the front profile was tapered to 1/2".  Do you mean to say that the bow is 1/2" WIDE?

Whoops. Meant to say its tapered to 1/2" at the tips. It's 1.5" wide at the center of the bow and the taper starts about 15 inches from the center.
