ok my last design turned out great so here we go again. the idea is to build a 48" bow on this form then take it out to 56" and try to get a 28" draw.
this time the goals are:
short bow
24" draw /28" draw
first bow between 10-15#@24/ 50#@28
limb at a time construction one piece.
here is my inital drawing. sorry it is dotted. had to convert it to PDF then JPG then shrink...

what do you guys think of the shape.. going to cut the form in the next couple days so if you see something wrong please yell out!
oh yea, the way i plan to accomplish all that.
first Artificially high brace height from all the deflex out of the riser (7-10deg. that pic is 7). >> longer draw length. 14" riser vice the 18" and 17" i used before>> more working limb. straight angle on back of riser to facilitate limb at once. no curve coming out of riser to minimize hing stress at riser tips. Healthy recurve (on the big one at least!!) low or no tapper to help prevent stacking further out. more tappered limbs to compensate some. the tapperem till it bends right.
made some progress here is the riser stack.

once the kids are asleep and the glue is dry i am going to cut the back and fades. then maybe try to put some epoxy clear coat on the last bow i built and still haven't finished.
Looking good so far.
thinking of changing it to a d/r dont know what draw length i can get, but i can make the form longer so that stretching it out will not be a problem with too much recurve and to keep the tillering easier. what do you guys think?
looks good so far
Cool!
here is the options i came up with. so far i am leaning twords sticking with the recurve.
I trued up the "limb pads on the disk sander, went slow and made sure the point formed in the middle lined up with the center marks front and back.
next i worked on of the fades i will not do the other until the first limb is glued up.
I picked up some wood for a form today but the printer is out of ink.. i am going to see what i can do.
if you haven't figured it out yet, the action shots are not true action shots.. my 5 yr old photographer is not allowed in the shop while i am grinding/sanding/cutting, unless under direct supervision.
I am going to go with the brown line. printed the pattern out, this time i glued it up prior to putting it on the wood, i have found when you are glueing several pieces of pattern together it is easier to line up if you do the paper by it self first. office max can print them full size but they have to be PDF, i am always concerned with the drawing getting distorted when it gets converted. and office max is a couple mile drive.
i dont have a table saw, so its a board for the rip fence and a battery powered circle saw...
here i am glueing up the form, it needs to be 31X9 so i am laying up 31X10.5 and i will cut it to size, that way the bottom is nice and square.
i seem to be buying another of bottle of TBIII every week, every time i get a bigger bottle.. i think that one lasted about 2 weeks...
now we wait!!! i am also working on the System3 epoxy finish on the last recuve and some jigs for the band saw. i think the wife is going to rope me in to putting up Christmas lights so i dont know how much more will get done tonight. wish me luck, climbing on anything higher then 6FT off the ground scares the hell out of me.... I have been told it is pretty amusing watching me go up a tree in the climber.
i got the form cut, some lams sawed, clamp reinforcement in, my arc cutter half way done, and the Christmas lights up.
here is some pics of cutting the form.
my fence is a piece of Junk.. gota square it up every time.

test fitting the riser. looks like i will need a bit of tweeking, i may use a rubber pad on the non glued side.
here is a good look at the reinforcing pad. i plan to use 3/4" thick feet, the clamp will not quite fit under them so the reinforcement is rebated.
i had some issues with risers sliding around on the last form, i figured out the reinforcement i used was not square, here i am making sure that doesn't happen again.
i used the riser to clamp in the reinforcement so i dont damage the top of the form. the fit up was not perfect so i used gorilla glue on this one.
thats all for now, next to add a Formica strip, cross drill, and put the feet on, then the form will be ready to go. i am not going to use tappers in the limbs so i will not put reverses on the form. if i later try some tappers i can grind the riser to compensate.
so my daughter won i am going to cut her a riser for this form as well. i am going to try a 14 degree limb pad and a 12" riser on this one. here is the autocad and artist rendition.. its going to walnut and purple heart. (i think)

i am going to use power lambs on both bows. the first i think i will use 0.050 black glass. going to finish the form and grind some lams today. hopefully my glass shows up from kenny tomorrow so i can make a bow!
Thanks for sharing,nice job!
thank you Curt.
i decided to grind the lams out. i have no idea how thick a stack i need, i just ground till the saw marks where gone. i did decided to go with a 0.002 tapper plus a 10in 0.010 tapper power lam.
here is the pics from this afternoons work.
grinding the power lams (they are packing material from kenny, walnut i think.)
after the power lams are ground the edges are paper thin. i wish i could get my fads that thin..
next the parallels are going thru.
here is the stack.
the o.oo2 tapper is 0.050 at the butt, all lams are 24" long... you got it that makes the tips 0.002 thick.. i hope i can glue them without breaking them.
you can see that i marked the end to use on the tip (on the parallels). i didn't check every inch with the calipers. so that makes sure any imperfections end up in the same place on both limbs.
ended up with:
0.050 tapper
0.040 parr
0.050 parr
plus the 0.030 glass X2
for a total of .210 minus the power lam.
power lam is .100 at the butt 0.010 tapper.
Glass should be there tomorrow! Shipped 12/03
Lookin good there!!
thanks kenny!
didnt take any pictures tonight.. i have been working on the finish on my recurve. i did get the formica strips glued on the form, next i need to cross drill it, then make a pressure strip and wait on the mail!
SO heres the update. I got the glass in the mail. finished the form with the exception of the alignment washers and unsuccessfully did a dry run. maybe tomorrow we will get to glueing.. here is the pics from tonight.
here is the form.
laying out the glass to cut, first i put high temp masking tape on the back. i use 2" then cut it to width.
here is the components of the pressure strip you can see one piece of rubber i have not cut down yet. i am glueing it on with contact cement prior to bending.
here is the pressure strip assembled you can see the thinner rubber on the back i use to ensure the bands push on the center of the strip.

the riser on the dry run
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/badgap.jpg)
here is the final clamp up, there is still 2 little gaps, one is on the riser where it will get ground out, the other is at the riser/powerlam interface. i think once i get some better clamps i can close that one.
so when i made my oven i only made it 20 inchs high, so the false top is split that causes a recess in the top about 4 inchs wide that gives clearance for the claps. the bar clamps hit false top... time for some new clamps i guess...
we also came to the first design flaw today. the form allows for 7 degress of angle and fits the riser perfectly. it does not how ever account for the taper of the power lam. if my trig is right it is about 1 degree off per lam. it is eough to screw up the clamp up. so i covered the other power lam with stretch wrap and stacked it with another lam and shimmed the riser with it. seems backwards but it worked.
Get a bigger (3") drum for your drill press. You'll thank me.
That aggressive curve on your fade is gonna be tough. If you tweak your pressure strip to match, it can assist in getting a good glue line.
Your forms profile looks more longbowish than recurve, not that it matters.
You have been a busy beaver Russ. I'm really enjoying watching from across the country! Tell Missy I said hello.
I will pass along the message. I changed the profile of the form before i cut it. hopefully it comes out with the string off the limbs. the form has 1 inch of deflex 1.5 inchs of reflex. i have the bigger drum i was just to lazy to change it. however i may tweek it now.
How did you make that grinder!!!
Its sweet!!
Chad
D-I-Y, brute force and ignorance mainly, but a bit of sound engineering and consideration for stress helped...
ok i got some 4 in clamps, couldn't work yesterday, the wife's car finally bit the dust and i hate cars so i nothing but 4wd's ever again for my family long story short, i had to drive to Seattle to buy a a SUV... those famous Seattle ferry rides really are amazing by the way!
back to the bow. i didn't take any pictures yet tonight. The fit up is perfect with some tweaking of the pressure strip and the addition of 2 c-clamps, on high on the fade and one at the limb/fade interface. the only place the fitup is not 100% is at the center point on the riser, where i plan to grind off round anyways. cranked the oven up to 110 degrees it so the smooth-on and bow form are warming up (its 42 in the shop)after the kids are clean and tucked in bed i am going to glue and bake it. still left to do is build a devider for the oven so i can do a half bake, also going to put a thermometer on both sides so i can keep an eye on the temp of the baking limb and the cool limb. hoping i do not have to split the top of the oven to keep the cool side cool because i think it will need more reinforcement to maintain it strong enough to stand on.
just remembered i still have to drill and attach the guide washers, so maybe i will get it glued tonight maybe not.
Don't rush it Russell, take your time.
When I hurry,I screw stuff up!
trying not to kenny, however there is a boat coming with my name on it so i am trying to get a lot done!!!
first picture post today!!
final clamping pattern i decided on
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1209092005.jpg)
drilling the guide washers, go really slow and use a backing board. i am not lubing the bit, and i don't what it to blow out on the back if they do blow out just file them down flush. plus if you go fast and are not using a clamp it might rip the washer out of your hand and give your fingers a pounding.
guide washers installed on form. yea i am using a lot. i bought 10 so i used 10, i am concerned about the riser not sitting strait and the limbs being out of wack, 2 guides on the riser should help.
form and work space are covered in plastic, i don't like the thin stuff, seems like everyone is split 50/50 i use thick plastic drop cloth. i have only bought 1 piece so far, just cut off the width i want from the folded up piece. style points here, if all the plastic ends up down and not bunched up the buggers go down and are easy to snap off by hand. if the plastic bunches it makes big boogers on the side of the bow.
i decided to protect the unused side of the riser as best i can because i don't want to screw up the angle when i clean it back up. like i said before the point is going to get ground off so i am not worried about a bit of glue there.
off to get some monsters in bed and glue it up. smooth-on has been at 110 for about 2 hrs now.
progress finally!
first limb is in the oven. i noticed 1 issue, once it was all clamped the riser had slid i expected that and since it is limb at once it doesnt really matter, however the power lam did not slide quite as much. the limbs dont have tapper so i am not worried about the lams. the power lam is 1/4" to long now. i am going to try to compensate on the other side. if it doesn't work out i will try to fix it with limb tapper. i figure if they are close worst case i will have a decent positive tiller.
work area ready to go, you can see i keep a box of gloves on hand, i change my gloves about 4 times. dont what any smooth-on on those clamps.
here is my smooth on heater, i mix it for about 2 mins till the color is uniform then put in under the light for about 10 mins. drives some of the bubbles out and gets it nice and soft.
limb is ready to clamp! you can see i have quite a bit of smooth on left. i mixed a bit over 3 ozs. and ended up with 1 oz left over. i used a bondo spreader cut to 2 inchs this time. the only place i went heavy was the riser back, the power lam and the fade. good info for the other side. this bow will take quite a bit less then the last. I have been using about 7 oz total.
bands are on and its ready to bake! oven was preheated by the time the bow went in. it will bake for about 3.5 hrs then slowly cool overnight. i used a lot of bands. about the same amount i use on half of the 72" form. hopefully with that much pressure the thin smooth on is enough!
thats it for tonight, if i get up early enough i will pull it out in the morning and post some pics.
got her off the form this morning. here is the first look, looks good only minior issues i see are the slid powerlam and the top glass is about 1/8 off to the side on the riser. guess she will not be 1.5 at the fades!!
glue lines look good as much as i can see them, guide washers are now stuck up on the form... oh well. limb squeezed out along the entire length the glue every where accept on the riser was paper thin and easy to break off by hand. i will clean her up tonight and hopefully get limb two glued.
got her sanded down and cleaned up, second limb is baking now, i took a picture but it didnt seem to save. same as the first glue up only with half a bow sticking out the other side. i did not divide the oven. i should have, maybe on the next one. it was a long day at work so i deceided just to glue this one up. i did manage to get the power limb off set a bit, and this dry run was a perfect fit up, so we will see how it comes out!
here is a picture of the first fade. there is a bit of wanut on the tip of the fade that is not a gap, i hope it shows up better once the bow is finished.
Good job Russ! Looking forward to the next installment.
How much longer to do you have looking at the sun each morning?
we will be refitting after christmas, when we are done we go.
today i got the limbs ground, 1.36 inchs at the 6" from center then tapered to 1/2 inch at the tips. i am happy i didn't use the limb taper, i don't like how much the bow is bending that the tips. i might beef up the last 6 inches or so with a fiberglass wedge. the power lam really did more then i thought it would. it doesn't appear to be bending at all. i have only bend the bow with the bow stringer (no nocks yet.) here are the pictures of tonight's progress
bow cleaned up and ready to mark center
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090034.jpg)
back of riser is rough ground to shape, you can start to see the final shape.
center is marked with a strait edge (advantage of the 48" bow!) here is how i am measuring the tips. i take the calipers set them to half the distance then spin and etch a line where it crosses the tip line
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090039.jpg)
I am marking the tapper with a "flexable" ruler
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090049.jpg)
here is the final profile prior to retaping (again) you can see the back of the riser as well.
thinking about coco riser overlay and tips but i haven't decided yet. also considering laying some white glass down then black on the last 4-6" of the tip to get them stiffer. i will nock it in the morning and start bending before i decide what i want to do about the tips.
Awesome!
ok string is one, even made a 12 strand flemish.. i am happier with the tips now i i see the bow drawn. tiller is even, 16#@ 20 inchs and starts stacking right there. 10#@ 16" still unsure about the coco, if it will match the classic look of walnut and maple. here are the pics, what do you guys think of the coco?
I HATE FILING NOCKS!!!! (and am not verry good at it.)
tools for filing the nocks
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090658.jpg)
nock is filed with a triangle jewelers file
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090659.jpg)
now the nock is opened up with a tile saw blade for the hack saw. it is stiff enough that i dont need to put it on the saw.
now the nocks are finished with the chain saw file.
here they are done.
here the bow is at brace. We have a long bow!
i used the bow square with a piece of tap on it to check the tiller. i mark a distance each way from center line (doesnt matter how long.. but i try for the end of the riser) then measure the distance to the string to that point. the sort one is the stiff limb, in this case the limbs are balanced.
here is is at brace (if you wonder why these pics are always on the kitchen floor its because i am using the lines on the floor to compare the limbs
(http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/1212090718.jpg)
Looking good Russ!
overlay is going on now, and tips are being glued together.
here is the supper getto clamp job on the overlay, i think it is going to work... notice the MDF will conform to your riser with enough pressure.
here is the tips.
i went with cocobolo over black 0.050 glass on the overlay, the tips are
1/16 white glass
1/16 black glass
~1/4 cocobolo
hope the coco match's the bow. i still think it might be a bit much.
do you guys let the coco oxidize prior to finishing it. i would say smooth on over oxidized coco looks better then over fresh surfaced coco.
here is the overlay and tips going on. here is the coco overlay roughed in.
here is the tip baking. I pre sanded the tip where it meets the bow. this time i was real careful to clean up all the smoothon while it was still wet.
Looking real good Russ cant wait to see the finished product.
Shawn
I will get back on the bow once my hands heal up. while grinding the riser i got fiberglass dust and coco dust in my gloves, my knuckles have been bleeding and blistered for a few days. i guess i am one of those people that is pretty sensitive to coco, as the fiberglass dust normally doesn't bother me too much. next time i will were some nitrile gloves under the rubber ones.
Ok i am back in action. tips are done, riser is coming along. cut the window with hacksaw and chisels. drum sander/drill press for the rough riser shape, then all the hobby rasp. i am done with the rough shape and am now evening it up with 60 grit. here is the pics...
these are my best looking tips yet.. (thanks marty!)
they are sealed with superglue hopefully i don't damage them working on the rest of the bow. at least that was the idea.

here is a shoot of the bow at brace. it has been a while since i took it to brace so i thought i would get a picture. (http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv319/xochal/48in%20recurve/roughatbrace.jpg)
current draw weight is 16# @ 24" and smooth to 24" i am done tapering the limbs so it should come in right there or a bit under.
of course since it has a string on it, and an arrow shelf cut... i had to shoot it. it DEAD in the hand. i really like the limb at once build i think it is responsible for it being so dead with out any work on the tiller. the 36" bow i made is pretty shocky.
Lookin good Russ!! Good lookin coco, what I've bought is redder.
i found the coco at the local exotic wood/boat yard
there was a cart full of scraps for 6.50a BF most of them where about 1"X 2"x 18" so i grabbed a couple of the most figured pieces. i got some really nice looking stuff! it was more red to start. i soaked the tips in acetone for a few hours. in retrospect i don't think i needed to do that. i lot of the "red" oil came out of the wood. the riser overlay was wrapped in paper towls then soaked with acetone then wrapped in plastic for a few hours. it retained a bit more color then the tips.
she is done here are the pics. i might go back and fix a few of the imperfections in can see, then again i doubt anyone but me will pick them out.

so what do you guys think? i like the limb at once. it takes longer but i think the product is better. it could use more coco in the riser... but thats just because coco is amazing. this one came in right at weight the first try. i am happy about that...
considering making this same bow in 62" NTN 2" at the fades. because it is autocad i can just scale up the design.
thanks for reading along! hope you enjoyed.
That's a hell of a good looking bow. Fantastic work Russel. I can't see any bad spots or imperfections. I hope the next one I'm building turns out like that.
Very nice, I enjoyed the build-a-long, thanks!
