Title: Holly
Post by: Mar on November 02, 2009, 08:59:00 PM
I cut down a holly tree today and got a couple of good chunks of wood out of it.
Would this be any good wood to use in building a bow such as a riser or laminate part of it?
Any suggestions on going about drying it out?

Holly will check badly until it cures. Even if you seal the ends and leave the bark on it will check. It is also relatively soft. Makes a good carving wood once stabilized.

Sure, the arc of my kristtornplankene. Here are some pictures of the arch. For the sake of clarity: The aim was to find out something about Holly is that buemateriale, since this is so very hard, tough and heavy, but no bows are finding this material. I was only 50 - 60 cm lengths, so I had to splice together a piece of wood, use it as buklaminat (4mm birch in the back and 11 mm holly in the abdomen, then.) And so I had to back 'side of the arc due scary birch laminate in the back. Uneven growth rings, fiber stature. Used spotted catfish 8)
The arch is 2m long, 43 mm wide at the handle and 11 mm wide at the tips. # 32 of 30 "move. If not completely satisfied with the shoulder fixed yet, maybe more bend in the middle part of the limbs? Fun parallel, the bow shoots very well! All round! Arch weighs about 750 grams./
