Title: 62" longbow-osage and grey actionwood
Post by: bjansen on October 31, 2009, 02:12:00 PM
I just finished this bow up last weekend. It is 62" ntn, actionwood lams and an osage riser with actionwood accent. I used white glass and osage for the belly overlays and phenolic and white glass on the tips and handle overlays.  10 strand ff string.  It really shoots good...much better than the 68" mild R/D bows I made in the past.

Nice bow.   Say, I was wondering if you could tell me about the bow that's fifth down from the top on the rack in the background of your last picture above.  (The natural colored one with the slightly reflexed tips.)  I like the way it looks.      :)     Again, good work.  Wish I had the patience/talent to build something like that.

Thanks guys...it should be interesting when that osage ages....maybe using yellowheart would keep the color combo over the life of it.

4est. That 5th bow you asked about was the 1st selfbow I made 66" with natural reflex. I got the pignut hickory stave from Diamondback59.  I left the cadmium on and put rawhide on the back and it looks like a laminated bow with the rawide, brown cadmium then white hickory.  Cocobolo tips and a floppy rest.  It seems as if the poundage on that bow changes quite a bit with humidity.  Here are some pics i have of it

Nice!  I like that rest...I use a very similar one myself on a couple of my bows.  Thanks for taking the time to share some pictures.

This is an amazing bow! I would love to do something grey like that. What did you use for a stain?

JDL...there is no stain..just a clear finish....the grey actionwood is purchased like that in block form.  The company takes about 20-30 thin (approx 1/32") veneers, stains them individually (grey in this case) then glues them together.  When you sand through the layers you get that excellent grain effect.  Rutland plywood company makes this stuff..check it out and you will see what I mean.

Thanks

It's awesome. The nockoverlays look better than ever, and that riser looks great!

I'd prefer to have a little more reflex in the outterlimbs, so It doesn't have the stiff-looking limbs at fulldraw. But that's just a personal preference  :)
