is it possible to cut the limbs off of a one piece recurve and mount to new riser to create a TD? why or why not?
thanks
You can make it a take down with a sleeve type or hinge type system but I believe take down limbs are made specifically for just that purpose with extra beefing at the fade area to support the bolts.
could you beef up the fade area to make it work? bet the biggist thing is you won't have a clue what weight you'll end up with. i'm quessing heavier.
I've never done it so I can't say for sure.
Marc St Louis, on the PA website, converted two of his broken all wood backed bow to a 3 piece take down. You could search for that on PA to see how he did it and his results.
iv cut a couple in half at the raaiser this is for a full stick bow now mind ya ha then fit the take down sleeves re worked the raiser area it worked ok but ya gotta be real carfel to make sure ur lined up stright with the limbs when you install the sleeves after that i did have to re tiller a bit but not much look at it close make sure you have plenty of wood in the raiser to work with befor ya cut it i say good luck brock
I had a all wood bow that split in the sight window so I cut the limbs off as long as I could and shaped up a riser. I used some internal nuts to anchor the limbs, and used two bolts per limb. I was suprized at how well the bow shot, in fact my son shot it and now I have to build him one. weight was about the same, brace was a little higher.
i'm doing it with this bow:

but i can't finish it untill i have use of a drill-press. i expect it to go well enough, but keep in mind i might need to re-tiller.
it's to be a 3 piece bolt-on.
I have cut four bows into takedowns. They were all, glass laminated bows. Two I did with take down sleeves and had no problems. They came out the same draw weight as before. On two I installed the quarter turn enternal sockets. They came out the same draw weight. One I never heard back from the owner. On mine the riser split a couple of years later. It was a glass bow with a riser of black walnut with a accent strip of fiberglass thru the middle of the riser. It is my next project bow to bring back to life. For me the sleeve style take downs are bullet proof. But the quarter turn sockets let you keep the beauty of an all wood riser and handle shape. Have fun Jeff
