Title: To refinish/repair vertical stress cracks
Post by: VAFarmer on October 16, 2009, 10:49:00 AM
near the riser of a one piece wood and glass Supermag 48-

These stress cracks do not look bad, to start with.  1-2 inches long, not into the limbs, but are on the glass, top and bottom.   I cannot put my finger nail into them, and they don't seem to be growing.  I really have a gut feeling that they may stay this way for as long as I keep the bow-if I so desired to leave them.

After the season is over-I would like to refinish/repair these if possible.

I have read loc-tite 420 and super glue to fill these spots, but am not quite sure of the process of application, that will leave my bow looking nice.

If there is a topic already posted, please guide me there.   if not, can someone take a few moments and answer some questions.

Do I sand the area in question, or the whole limb?
Clean next?
Apply filling material next? How many applications?
Sand next?
Reapply polyurethane or some other material?

Thanks and God bless,

Farmer

If the finish on the rest of the bow looks good just fill the crack with thin super glue and sand carefully away the excess.  If the rest of the finish doesn't looks so good sand the whole bow and if you want to reshape the grip raduise the shelf etc then that would be the time to do it.  Then fill the cracks and sand.  Afterwords finish the bow with tru oil and let it dry.

Thanks so much.

I will probably sand the bow, yes the shelf could stand to be radiused.

God bless,,

Anyone know of any other ways to fix or eliminate stress cracks in old recurves? Any tried sanding, filling, and restaining the glass?
