Title: Changing a righty to a lefty, can it be done?
Post by: RAEllison52 on August 28, 2009, 12:08:00 AM
I have a laminated bamboo longbow that was built for my nephew by a bowyer I have never heard of.  I cannot find him in any people search.  My nephew had ordered this bow but was tragically killed in an accident before it could be delivered.  My brother gave it to me.  I would very much like to shoot it but I have 45 years of instinctive shooting, all LEFT handed.  To late to change.  Is it possible to alter such a bow and make it into a lefty.  It is laminated bamboo and had a red elm or shedua core.  Bowyers name was Lynn Harvlson.  Never heard of him.  It is a keep sake, a memory of my nephew and I don't want to mess it up.  Thanks

Read Glenn St.Charles "Billets to Bows". Because of a shoulder injury he had to switch to left hand shooting. He said after 2 weeks of shooting left handed is all came together.    Being able to shoot ambidextrous would be the best of all worlds in a hunting stand. Instinctive shooting lends itself to ambidextrous shooting.

Is this bow an all wood laminated?(no fiberglass)
And does it have a shelf cut in? can you post a picture of the shelf area? what are the bows specs?

Lyn Harrelson is a regular vender at all the shoots in Alabama, Miss and the Tn Classic at Twin Oaks. He makes a fine bow including the one you have.

Here is his website. He may be able to make your bow a lefty for you.

Good on you Eric, I could not remember Lyn's home state. I thought he was still around and making bows. Give the maker a call.

Eric, thanks so much.  That is him.  I guess I just could not make out the name under the fiberglass lamination and therefore was spelling it wrong.  He signed the bow but the signature was small.  I will send him an email and see if my request is possible.
I am a new member to Tradgang and really appreciate all the kind assistance.  I have also been a very dedicated recurve shooter for many years.  A longbow is an interesting challenge and even if this will not work, I will probably end up with one. My wife is reading this over my shoulder.  "Yeah you need another bow" was her comment.  Well, yeah.  I do.
By the way, my nephew's name was Eric also.
