Title: Hickory selfbow for my niece
Post by: kodiakkid on August 09, 2009, 05:15:00 PM
I happen to be lucky enough to live next door to my brother and his family. He has a 9 yr old girl and a 2 yr old boy. My niece asked me if I would build her a bow and I said sure. Everytime she sees me outside shooting she asks if I have finished her bow yet. It is almost complete. All I really lack is lacing on the leather grip and building her a string. I am not a very experienced bow builder. I found this bow as hard to tiller if not harder than any I've built for myself. It is 50" tip to tip and I have no idea what the weight is. My scale will not read that low. She can pull it back with a little effort. She says it is just right. LOL I'm not positive the tiller is exact, but I'm scared to keep messing with it. Whatta you guys think.
What kind of brace height should I go for?  Thanks, Paul<><

The tiller looks good. A bit stiff just off the handle but that doesn't matter. Looks perfect for your niece!  Well done.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I laced the grip on last night and added pink and white beads to the lacing. Used a stain that left the hickory with a pinkish tint. Gonna build a red and white string for it. The red B-50 I have seems to bleed bad and makes a red and white string pink after a couple good waxings. She said she wants it to be girly.

The bow looks great.

For the brace height, I like to brace kids bows high to keep the string from hitting their arm.  Nothing turns a kid off from shooting faster than getting bit on the arm by their bow.
